In terms of how well they've played in the most recent season I'd probably go with Manchester United.

Back on topic: I don't think you can say who is the best football team in the world if it is spread over such a long period of time with so many things to consider, as the original poster has asked for. For instance, if you go on past glories and trophies/titles won then Liverpool (in England anyway) are far and away the best, but if you go on more recent times i.e, 1990 - 2007 Man Utd would have to be classed as the best!
The season Arsenal (who Preach mentioned) went through a whole season undefeated was amazing and the football that they played was near perfect at times, yet the season just gone they were pretty average so can not really be considered to be the best!
For an answer to this thread, the timescale needs to be scaled down a little.
If it can't be and i had to pick the best football club of all time i would have to say Real Madrid!

From the little I saw of them last season Barca played lovely football and were by most accounts unlucky to not win the League (indeed they would have won it by Premiership rules) Arsenal however for all their nice passing without an end product fall short of the standards set by United last season who played wonderful, commited, creative, attacking football more than equal to Arsenals and unlike Arsenal with goals coming form all over the pitch.

For me the 'best' team from last season was United who played exciting football whilst winning the league and getting to the semifinals of the European Cup. Over the last few seasons Barcelona take it for a combination of exciting football combined with sustained achievement domestically and in Europe.

I really don’t know who the ‘greatest’ team of all time is but for me atleast it certainly isn’t Real Madrid who are forever tainted by their association Franco’s brutal fascist dictatorship, which bankrolled them and repeatedly tilted the domestic game in their favour till the evil ******* died.

I reckon Gretna deserve a mention. They have achieved much in the last few seasons including a SFA Cup Final spot and promotion into the Scottish Prem. I know it doesn't sound much but for a club the size of Gretna it is a huge achievment. I wish you well in the new season and am confident you will stay up.

If you're saying in the 'whole world' then I figure you've got to take a couple of seasons into account, and there's a few contenders for the title of best in the world.

Real Madrid have been pretty quiet over the last few seasons, obviously scraping up the La Liga title this season though. Barcelona have been the best club in the Spanish leagues over the past 5 years though, both in their achievements in domestic and european matches.

In England it's quite close, Manchester United and Chelsea have probably been on par with each other over the last four years, but I'd have to say it's probably Manchester United who'd I'd say is the best in England right now (Chelsk aren't far behind though). Liverpool however have played the best in Europe out of any team in England for sure.

In Italy AC Milan are the best team by a long shot at the moment, they have done incredibly in Europe, the other main teams got a little shell shocked by their punishments.

I couldn't answer the question though, I mean, there's so many different ways of looking at it. Domestically, Chelsea and Manc are alot better than Liverpool, however, Liverpool are alot better in Europe.

Shortlist is probably Barcelona, Liverpool, Manc, Chelsk and AC Milan.
