View Full Version : 80's films - era of The Brat Pack
Mr Z and I were having a chat about great 80's films and playing Scene It - which of course played clips from such films as Karate Kid and Mrs Doubtfire.
What were your favourite 80's films and actors and why?
Mine rank:

St Elmo's Fire, Ghostbusters
Dirty Dancing, Twins
Labyrinth, Neverending Story
Legend, The Goonies
Krull, The Lost Boys
Corey Haim and Corey Feldman, the older guy from Lost Boys *slurp*, Tom Cruise

I remember watching some of those when they were shown on TV in the early nineties.
As I was born in 1987 I pretty much missed out on the "great" films shown at the cinema in the 80s. Saw the repeats of them at christmas though ;)
Just thought of `Weird Science` that was cool!

Not a bad movie. I like John Cusack.
He has a sister named Joan Cusack who's also an actor. Guess it runs in the family.

pitsmoor 08-12-2004, 16:14 Gees theres too many films too mention but i do remember one film i liked but cant remember the name.
The film was about an high school student who hacked into the millitary computer and almost started world war 3.
Would you mean "War Games"? With Matthew Broderick?
Sierra :)
Plain Talker 08-12-2004, 17:53 I can't believe no-one has mentioned "Together in Electric Dreams"
it had a great (if dated, now) soundtrack with Georgio Moroder and The Human League's own Phil Oakey!
Breaking Glass, anyone? (or was that one more 1979? No, it was 1980, I just googled it!) I loved the soundtrack, especially "Stay Now," and "Eighth Day"
I remember the film Xanadu with Olivia Newton-John and The inimitable Gene Kelly.. soundtrack by E L O.
P "yes, I like soundtracks to movies!" T

I always find it funny watching War Games with the gigantic old computers back then.
One of the best films of the 80's has to be Fright Night

All John Hughes films up to, but not including, Home Alone.
And Revenge of the nerds.....defo....1-4 inclusive. Although 3 was released in '92, and 4 in '94....but I still see them as part of an 80's film collective.
And, it's getting re-made. Not sure how I feel abouth that.....

Was a film about a kid getting wupped by all, then Bruce Lee comes back from the grave and teaches him to kick ass. Man I used to love that film... come to think of it... pretty sad really :/

Yes, remember it well with a young Van Damme in it. I actually preferred No Retreat, No Surrender 2 though.
Reading everyones replies to this thread has been brilliant, so many films come flooding back.
There's only one which frustrates me, it must have been released in 1990 ish, and its about a girl who basically goes from ugly duckling to swan, brace off, hair done, new clothes, legs on show etc. The ad for the film showed her gliding down stairs wearing all white new romantics type clothes.
Anyone recall this one?
No idea the title of it or anything anymore.
I do remenber La Bamba though, smooooochy!

The opening of that movie was excellent - when the blokes in the missile control pod are supposed to fire the missiles and one refuses to turn the key.
The military commander with the miles of medal ribbons turned up in the 90s as the ex-atronaut Maurice on 'Northern Exposure'.
One of the nice things about War Games for people who're interested in the history of hacking and such is that the hacking scenes are pretty realistic - although I guess nowadays kids wouldn't bother with school grades - they'd just short circuit the whole process and o straight for the money! :)
