View Full Version : What venues are open / closed? (NOT Meadowhall) (Merged threads)
Hello,
I know the ice stadium isn't far from the areas in the news - does anybody know if it has been flooded or if it likely to be reachable tomorrow?
Thanks
Dont think its flooded , but certainly closed tonight . My boys were supposed to have training tonight but it was cancelled. But from what i understand they have no electricity.
Thanks - appreciate the info, I guess I'll call in the morning (had a lesson booked :-( )
Tried calling this morning, phone number was "temporarily unavailable."
Presumably that means no power, I wonder how long ice lasts without power!
leighrichy 26-06-2007, 05:30 Is that 'ice sheffield'??
leighrichy 26-06-2007, 05:51 Attercliffe Road is fine, so I'm sure that Ice Sheffield is fine. Power is out, though.
I hope that this is not too trivial for the flood forum but I wanted to know about the status of Sheffield's magnificent real ale pubs down by the Don:
I assume that these places suffered badly:
Fat Cat
Kelham Island Tavern
Harlequin
The Riverside
Can anyone confirm this?
Does anyone know if the Cask and Cutler and The Gardner's Rest are open?
It would be nice to support venues that are in the vicinity of the mayhem but that escaped damage. People might be staying away on the assumption that they are closed.
Thanks,
Pete
Here is what I know
Kelham Island Tavern - will be closed a few weeks. Cellar flooded and the cellar is condemned so it needs repairing and sanatising. In bar was a few inches of water which has contaminated the flooring so this needs replacing. The Fat Cat is in the same position.
Gardeners Rest suffered much worse being right against river. Water was half way up bar, beer patio wrecked, inside pub there is apparantly a lot of mud so I am guessing a major refit will be required. Pub closed UFN.
Harlequin - not heard situation but assume similar to Kelham/Cat.
Riverside - not heard any news
Milestone - not heard any news
Cask & Cutler - unaffected, still open
New Barrack Tavern - unaffected, still open
Hillsborough Hotel - unaffected, still open
The Moon - unaffected, still open
Thanks for the update Andy C.
There are a few pictures of the Kelham Island Tavern here:

Shame about the Gardeners - hope Pat & Eddy are OK. :(
jamesogt 27-06-2007, 12:16 Do sheffield brewery and kelham island have any beer brewed still in saleable condition or were their stocks damaged too?
Anyone know about the New Barrack Tavern and the Meadow? I'm assuming they're OK.
Thanks for the information Andy. I hope that they all have good insurance and the will to rebuild their businesses.
I will do my bit by visiting the remaining venues as often as possible.....

I've just seen BBC lunchtime news and Kelham Island Brewery was on. They say ALL there stock is contamimated so will take weeks to restock.
Customers apparently still want it anyway, must be good beer!
Flightlevel 27-06-2007, 12:56 Kelham Island Tavern - 6inches of water. Closed until further notice. Landlord expects at least a month.
Fat Cat. Similar Damage to Kelham Island Tavern. Closed.
Riverside. Visually looked as if ok as a fraction higher. Cellar likely flooded at least so will need full clean for food stuff storage.
Harlequin. badly flooded. Closed - likely until further notice.
Gardeners Rest. Worst affected of all. 5ft of water inside. Severe damage. As above, likely to be closed for quite some time.
All others (Cask, Moon, Meadow St, Ship, Hillsborough Hotel, New Barrack) ok, so far as I am aware. Water level did not reach any of these. But may be cellar innundation. It will be the Kelham Tav, Fat Cat, Gardeners and Harlequin which will likely be shut for quite some time.
A shame to see the damage. Best of luck to the landlords and staff and hoping for a swift clean up and reopening pints!!
Also Kelham Island Brewery was inundated. Now being cleaned up but probably not brewing this week. It has just also been on the BBC1 1 O'clock news with reporters in the Kelham Island area.
Thanks Flightlevel.
:shakes:
Good question 'PeteM01'.
I hope the Kelham Island and the Fat Cat are open again real soon.
The Milestone's cellar was flooded but no damage to the rest of the building. Closed until the cellar cleaned etc.
Well, I can confirm that the Cask and Cutler is open tonight and serving fine beer. It was very sad, though, to walk past the Milestone, Fat Cat, Kelham Island Tavern and The Harlequin and see them closed. I also went to the Wicker for a curry afterwards. Of course, all the places by the arches are closed but the Kashmir was open and serving the usual great thalis. I stopped on the way back to chat to the staff working on the Chaman, spray cleaning all the fixtures. They reckoned it would take at least 4 weeks to get open again.
It will be nice when everything is back to normal but, for some people, this will take a long time.
Note that there is no problem with access, no mud anywhere etc. I am sure the remaining businesses need your trade, so don't stay away!
Cheers,
Pete
Grotbags 28-06-2007, 02:25 Hi shaz here from The Meadow St Hotel, very sorry to here of the damage and closures. I did a ring round on mon but only managed to make contact with Kelham. Myself and John are happy to lend a hand and help in any way that we can down on that part of the trail. We had a few leaks but no flooding and are open as usual. We have had some cellar cooling problems but we now have it in hand.
On the pumps this week;
KELHAM GOLD
SLATERS, TOP TOTTY
CAMERONS, STRONGARM
JENNINGS, SNECKLIFTER
PHEASANT PLUCKER SCRUMPY ON TAP
EVERYONE WELCOME, CUSTOMERS OLD, NEW or TEMPORARY.
SpecialKay 28-06-2007, 17:28 Does anyone have a full list of affected small/local/independent businesses? Pubs or otherwise. Or can anyone contribute information about places near them that appear to have closed because of the flooding?
Equally, updated info on expected re-opening times, or ways in which we can help would be useful.
Thanks
The insurance claim for the Farfield is in - apparently the flood has done about 38p worth of damage so far.
Anyone any news about the Sheffield Brewery..? :|
Sheffield Brewery have condemned all beer allready brewed or still fermenting and need to clean/disinfect the premises and equipment. Should be back up and running soon.
At the Kelham Island Tavern all the sludge etc was cleaned out the cellar last night and it now needs pressure blasting, painting, sanatizing etc. In the pub the flooring needs replacing and minor redecorating. Should be open in a few weeks.
Fat Cat the floor is OK, but as at the Kelham the cellar needs fixing up, should be open again in a week or two.
Harlequin will need cellar repairs too.
Riverside is open.
Gardeners saw flood water up almost to the top of the bar and the pub interior is completely trashed and will need a major refit.
Meadow St/Moon/Ship/Cask/Hillsborough/New Barrack Tav all ok.
Thanks for the update. I am glad to hear that the Harlequin was not too badly hit as the place was really growing on me: spacious and friendly with some great dark beers. I am surprised, though, as it is so close to the river and below the level of the top of the river bank.
jamesogt 29-06-2007, 14:47 In support of local beer and local businesses, The Devonshire Arms Ecclesall Rd will be having a Local beer only month in August. (If beer is available by then! If not then September!) It will mainly be Sheffield Brewery and Kelham Island. So support local business and local pubs and come for a pint!
Topic.
Planning on going to see Shrek the Third some time next week, and apparently VUE at Meadowhall is shut for the forseeable future due to the recent floods, I know it's almost a given the Odeon'll be shut so Cineworld's my best shot.
Bomberman 29-06-2007, 19:04 I've been digging out the skatepark over the road from the Gardners (park is fine btw) and they reckon it'll be a couple of months shut.
Never mind, just checked the web site and it doesn't say anything about being closed in Sheffield.
Mods can lock this if you want.
Cineworld was open today. Went there to watch Hostel. What a load of rubbish that was. sick.
It still says shut....(myvue.co.uk and select Sheffield) You could try ringing them?
karen1573 29-06-2007, 20:20 They were on the list for load-sharing power this week (the whole of Centertainment was) but I believe that's all finished now.
Let us know if you get an answer cos I was thinking of going to watch Pirates 3 again this weekend. Arrr.
veganmiss 29-06-2007, 23:23 cineworld is open as usual now was closed tuesday and opened for a little wednesday but ok now just the occasional power flicker
I've searched the forum for this - apologies if it's posted somewhere already...
Does anybody know what pubs are open in Kehlam Island? I've heard the Milestone's up and running again - any others?
Cheers
If you search about, it's definitely posted on here somewhere- I'll go and have a look.

There's some info further up in this thread.
Damn- Kristian got there before me!
Fat Cat's website says they are to open tonight, although I suspect that they may be using the bar in the visitors centre rather than in the actual pub (the visitor centre is the 'brick shed' in the beer garden).
Some pictures of the floods around the Fat Cat pub are on their website here http://www.thefatcat.co.uk/news/news.htm
Hopefully the place will now smell better. ;)
Ravenger 02-07-2007, 21:54 Magna was closed on Sunday. Website says due to flooding Magna is closed until Saturday 21st July. The Playground (SciTek) and the Water Park (AquaTek) will be open on the 7th, 8th, 14th and 15th. July.
Damn- Kristian got there before me!
He's too good that lad! :D
Cheers for your help Kristian and Medusa

The Fat Cat is now open, serving beer on gravity. The Harlequin is also open, serving bottled ale.
It looks like the Gardeners will be out of action for some weeks to come. :(
SpecialKay 07-07-2007, 15:45 The Gardeners was my favourite. I guess the bar billiards table will have had to be thrown out. [glum face]
I'm afraid the Bar Billiards table was ruined. The water was up as high as the bar.
Wonder Boy 08-07-2007, 19:25 The Fat Cat is now open, serving beer on gravity. The Harlequin is also open, serving bottled ale.

3 things...
1. What beer is on at the fat cat and is it any good?:gag:
2. Any news on the kelham island tavern?
3. Was/Is the riverside affected?
3 things...
1. What beer is on at the fat cat and is it any good?:gag:
I wouldn't have thought so, it isn't normally.
2. Any news on the kelham island tavern?
I think they are staying closed until they can open properly. Hopefully not too long.
3. Was/Is the riverside affected?
I believe their cellar was a mess but they didn't do as bad as some places. I think they may be open but don't know for definite.
Here is the latest I am aware of on the Kelham Island area pub situation:
Cask & Cutler: open, trading normally
Milestone: open, possibly no draught products
Kelham Island Tavern: closed, flooring being replaced. Should be open by end of month.
Fat Cat: open, limited beer range from temporary stillage
Riverside: open, trading normally
Harlequin: open, no draught products (bottled beer available).
Gardeners Rest: closed, complete refit required.
The Harlequin's cellar is now cleaned up, repainted, sanatised and the rest, they just need the new equipment fitting then draught products will be back on the bar.
Fat Cat's August beer festival is postponed, however once cellar finished and new carpets fitted the pub should get back to normal.
Moon, Hillsborough Hotel, New Barrack Tavern, Meadow Street Hotel and the Ship Inn are also open and trading normally, these were not affected by the floods.
