View Full Version : What's the longest you've waited for an out of stock yarn order?
I ordered the yarn for the IK Ogee skirt a while ago. The web site didn't state that it was out of stock and neither did I receive an email or phone call to say that it was. The notification came with the rest of the items I'd ordered at the same time.
Now it's only been just over a fortnight, but it feels like aggggeees, and I'm desperate to make a start. I really do wish that internet yarn companies would keep their sites up to date re stock. When they only have a web presence, it really should be a high priority, if not automated. Grumble, grumble, grumble...
What's the longest you've waited for an order of out of stock yarn?
I waited about a month. It's annoying because by the time it comes you've aleady moved on from wanting to do that knit and onto something else. I suppose it's the penalty we pay for buying from the t'interweb

The thing is though, I've very, very rarely had to wait for an order. My usual internet companies (Get Knitted, Woolly Workshop, Web of Wool etc) are usually fantastic. This one was from a company I haven't used before (and had actually been warned off :suspect:).
Also, my nearest LYS is a good few miles away and not at all practical to get to. Admittedly, this order was for basic Rowan yarn - and I was tempted because it was on offer - but in most cases for most of the more obscure and imported stuff, the internet is the only source.
I know that shops have problems with suppliers, and there's probably a perfectly good reason for the delay, but it's just so frustrating!
Glitter Star 29-06-2007, 19:27 I once ordered some sock yarn on the internet, and soon after making the order I got an email telling me it was out of stock and I would have to wait a while.
It took two months to arrive, and in that time I forgot all about buying the yarn. It was then really exciting to receive the yarn unexpectedly in the post.
This was only one skein of sock yarn, so I wasn't desperate for it, but if you've got a larger project on the go I suppose it can be annoying to wait a while.
Wool4brains 02-07-2007, 18:34 In general terms, if I want it I want it NOW. My record for waiting has been two weeks which for me is unbelieveably restrained. It was bog standard Opal and if they'd said at the start it was out of stock then I would have gone elsewhere to start with. They didn't tell me that it was out of stock until I queried the non-arrival after a week, I gave them a week for good measure and then asked for my money back.
I like the companies where you order in the afternoon and have it arrive in the next morning's post.

Absolutely. Woolly Worksop are excellent for that. They have the order out of the door almost before they've received it. Generally receive it within 24 hours of having placed the order.
How long do suppliers take to supply anyhow? Assuming that they place an order with them within a day or so of receiving a customer order and realising they're out of stock? I had Jill order me some Colinette in a colour she didn't have in stock, and that was still with me within a few days.
Just queried the order, so we shall see what happens...
I hate it when that happens. There is one shop I try not to order anything from because out of all the times I have ordered from them, they're always out of stock of something. Now I just don't bother.
Same as you Hecate (wonder if we're talking about the same place?) they don't actually tell you the item is out of stock until the other stuff you've ordered from them arrives eventually.
Very frustrating.
Well, the outstanding yarn arrived this morning, around five weeks after placing the order. Good job I had other projects in the pipeline and it wasn't urgent.
Wool4brains 20-07-2007, 21:39 I admire your patience Hecate, I would have cancelled well before that. If it was something that was unobtainable elsewhere then I might have hung on for a few weeks but not for something that is a basic. It's one thing to be told when you order that there will be a wait but to be kept hanging around like that is inexcuseable. I bet you won't be ordering from them again.

My defence is that the yarn was significantly cheaper than anywhere else. It it hadn't been on offer, and/or if I'd been in desperate need of it, I too would have cancelled the order and gone elsewhere. I certainly won't order again routinely.
EDIT: Just noticed that at the end of June I was apparently desperate to make a start. Since then, I've completed a pair of socks, a scarf and progressed on the Bayerische socks. Not that I'm fickle or anything :hihi: .
Yes, I would have cancelled before now too! Glad you got it in the end though.
