TUESDAY JULY 3rd
OCEAN COLOUR SCENE
THE CHARTISTS
They’re back! With bigger side burns and even better riffs swagger Britpop Britrock survivors OCEAN COLOUR SCENE. With new LP ‘On the Leyline’ proving they’ve lost none of their mojo, this July 3rd show is one of two intimate warm up gigs preceding the festival season…
Fads, fashion, poverty, despair, critical applause, critical maulings, break ups, record company politics… All part and parcel of the tall tale behind rock and soul rebels, Ocean Colour Scene. They’ve been to the top and the very bottom of the pop music pile and are now back on target with the recently released long player ‘On the Leyline.’
With eleven top twenty singles in their wake and numerous classic albums (including the brilliant ‘Moseley Shoals’) these Brummies were mammothly successful during the Britpop years playing with Oasis at Knebworth and even knocking them off the top spot in the album charts with ‘Marchin’ Already.’
It was in the creative slipstream of the Gallagher brothers and Weller that they carved their own brand of Levi wearing firey retro rock which rabble roused and romanticised in all the right areas. It’s been testament to their wiley song writing crafts that they were able to take an already well worn classic guitar pop template and make it their own.
From the iconic ‘Riverboat Song’ to ‘The Day we Caught the Train,’ ‘100 Mile City’ and new single ‘I Just got over you,’ Ocean Colour Scene have always been able to veer from the anthemic to the heartbroken with delicate skill.
Led by the charisma of vocalist Simon Fowler, the riotous guitar stylings of Steve Craddock and drumming of Oscar Harrison (and augmented by new boys, bassist Dan Sealey and guitarist Andy Bennett) the new LP was recorded at Simon’s house over a 12 day period of intense creativity last summer.
The new album ‘On the Leyline’ is a true return to form. With juices boiling there’s a renewed fire in their creative bellies which burns brightly through the cracks in the new tuneage. Whether it’s the Chancellor baiting ‘Mr Brown,’ the Paul Weller collaboration ‘For Dancers only’ or first single ‘I told you so’ it’s obvious that the spark has not yet been abaited despite the march of time.
This is one of two intimate warm up gigs before the group take on T in the Park, V Festival and Fuji Rock festival. With a clutch of songs this sharp who knows. It could be their time again…
Support comes from local guitar rustlers, The Chartists. They’ve been described as the perfect band for those with long hair, skin tight jeans and ‘dazzling white ankle height Hi -Tecs.’ With the quality of their frazzled rock anthems and soul searching blues ballads their appeal should far outstretch this slight demographic. Get their early for an aural slice from these talented local lads…
