Shuffle prances straight into the summer months with an eclectic line up headed up by old skool house dons K-KLASS. Live antics come from the council pop of Rotherhamite PADDY ORANGE, East London rapper SHAMELESS and Sheffield’s funk rock merchants, CELLAR HIGH…
Born as an idea just to get a track played at the Hacienda over 18 years later K-KLASS are still going strong within dance music circles. With numerous top 40 hits under their belts (including the massive ‘Let me Show You’ and the top three nuzzling ‘Rhythm is a Mystery’) this Wrexham outfit are one of the most influential purveyors of the classic house sound.
During the early 1990s K-Klass took a live band on the road, clocking up over 200 gigs before turning to the studio and decks as the best articulation of their sound. Since then they’ve DJed at some of the biggest clubs and electronic events on the dance music circuit including Creamfields and stints in Hong Kong and Ibiza.
While putting out their own material the pair have also tuned in to other artists’ sounds, having remixed the likes of Kylie, New Order and Frankie Knuckles and been behind the production on The Pet Shop Boy‘s ‘Bilingual.’ They were also crowned as ‘International Remixers of the Year’ in 1995 and receiving a Grammy for their re-rub of Samantha Mumba’s ‘Baby Come on Over.’
The pair are still sought after Djs and rinse out class sets which fuse their influences, own studio endeavours and plenty of heavy handed dance floor classics. Taking in all genres of house, from funky vocal 4/4 to more minimal and electronic sounds, the K-Klass boys are as much about education as entertainment. Whatever they drop you won’t be able to stop moving as these guys are expert party players. Stick those hands in the air…
Leading the set of live frolics will be Rotherham rapper PADDY ORANGE. Last seen at Plug supporting Gilles’ Peterson fave, Ben Westbeech, Paddy was too good not to ask back for a return date. With songs such as ‘Dancing shoes’ within his tune armoury (sample lyric - ‘Tonight Matthew I’m John Travolta, God’s my DJ, decks me altar’) it’s clear his is a local talent set to go worldwide.
Full of fun and lo-fi funk Paddy Orange’s humorous hip hop grooves feature the input of Steel City producer Minus Blue, ex - Moloko guitarist Dougy and the vocals of Sophie Bramley-West. Having tasted success through winning the ‘Two Weeks to Make it’ Music video competition with an inspired visual interpretation of their ‘Love at First Sight’’ track, the collective are attracting attention from music industry scouts and have a gig filled summer ahead. Watch this space, the future just maybe Orange…
Straight outta East London comes hip hopper SHAMELESS armed with a clutch of tough tunes which feature on his debut long player, ‘Smokers Die Younger.’ (fitting seeing as this is the last rave up at Plug before the smoking ban kicks in)
Having played at Killa Kela’s Spit Kingdom night and recorded a well received session for Jon Kennedy’s XFM, Shameless has gone from strength to strength in 2007 brilliantly backed by the musical might of his Paddy Ragga live band.
Having played gigs with the likes of Wiley and Sway earlier this year, Shameless’ massive new single ‘Everyday’ is a stone cold killer and should attract even more interest in this young rapper. Featuring a huge Rod Stewart sample and remixes with Plan B this hook laden bomb bodes well for a summer of festival and club shows (including a Friday down at Fabric). Get involved…
Sheffield’s CELLARHIGH are a band born out of basement binges and jamming, a four man funk rock machine who’ve lorded over numerous stages in the Steel City. Equally at home on a bill of bands as they are bouncing a club stage this motley crew love the raw rock of Rage as much as the techno soul of Jamie Lidell.
Having supported the likes of The Kaiser Chiefs, Chikinki and Louis XIV they’ve recently released their ‘As seen on TV’ EP and are continuing to attract hoards of new fans with each passing gig. Another Sheffield act to keep your eyes on…
Also on hand to ensure the hip hop indie funk crossover action does not stop will be Sheffield turntable artist DJ RISCO. A key figure within Steel City hip hop and founder of the notorious Fundamentalz evening he’s also provides the beaty backbone for local crew Constant Creation. This man is pure class through and through…
