I m a classroom support and have no specific qualifiactions for the job. However you can do NVQ Teaching Assistant. I did voluntary work in a school which I found stood me in good stead.

most TA's these days have NVQ qualifications or are working towards them. Many started out as nursery nurses and have certificates in that area although they work with older children. Once you have an NVQ 3 or equiv and Maths/English GCSEs then you can gain Higher Level Teaching Assistant status, which means you can cover whole classes during teacher absence.
The pay is poor even when you have qualifications and you may find yourself working above what you are paid for as schools operate on shostring budgets so you have to turn your hand to whatever comes.Saying that it can be a lot of fun. You will almost certainly work predominately with children at the lower end and those with special needs, for which you will need endless patience and optimism as progress is very slow. You will probably be involved in extra curricular stuff, lunchtime clubs, golden times on Fridays so having an arty skill, or being sporty, or good at IT or a modern oreign language is useful.
I could go on and on , of you wan more info pm me.
