View Full Version : Diabetes
Does anyone have diabetes ? i just recently found out i have diabetes 2, not as bad as 1.
i just by chance happend to ask my doc for a blood test, my sugar count was over 100, there are NO symptons with it, like high blood pressure either, now i have to cut out all sweets and go on a diet, also medication every day, exersise does help it a lot too.
My partner has type 2 diabetes poppins.
He manages it very well with medication and tries not to eat the wrong things. Count of 100 seems awfully high, his sugar level has to be beteen 4-7. We have a machine to test it.
Keeping off alcohol is his hardest part!

My mother-in-law is diabetic and was a chocoholic! Her symptoms were lethargy amongst other things. She has dropped a couple of dress sizes and looks alot better for it. She takes tablets and has a machine for testing. 100 does seem really high. I had mine tested recently and it was 5.2. Just look forward to a slimmer figure - if you aren't already
Plain Talker 05-12-2004, 18:56 I have insulin dependent diabetes.
The Sheffield branch of Diabetes UK meets monthly, in the city centre. (my best mate is the deputy chair)
You can meet other diabetics, (type1 and type 2) who can give you their perspective on living with diabetes.
You can get alll sorts of information from the leaflets etc that they distribute...
they have socials, guest speakers, all kinds of stuff goes on.
I also recommend liaising closely with your diabetes specialist nurse, who can give you information on almost any aspect of the condition.

My dad and grandmother has it also all my uncles on that side of the family. I hope it skips a generation and I don't get it. However, only a few have to take insulin the rest controll it with diet and tablets.

What can people do to stop them getting it in the first place?

Your blood sugar counts must vary from our readings in the us as here a normal count is between 60-90
high could be 110-150, thats interesting, so mine isn't too bad but could be worse, i use to check it 3-4 times a day, now i'm back on the chocs so i'm afraid to do the tests too often, walking i find brings it down, even after going to the supermarket it reads much lower than before i go.
Plain Talker 05-12-2004, 21:55 type 1, (more commonly called Juvenile-Onset) diabetes
is difficult to avoid getting.
Type 2 however, (more commonly called Maturity-Onset diabetes) is a bit "easier" to stave off,
Whilst it won't guarantee a *definite* escape of type 2, if you follow your doctors advice, you will definitely lessen the chance of it developing, if you may be prone to diabetes developing.
Eat healthily, take exercise, keep your weight and cholesterol down, and have regular checkups.
Watch the amount of fat and sugars that you take in.
Take advice about eating foods which have what is called a low Glycaemic Index, that is, UN processed foods, and slower release starches and sugars, such as brown rice, brown bread, and oats etc.
(which is really a healthy diet for most people, not just those with diabetes)
If you have a weakness for sweet things, try to eat them
a) in moderation- a little (NOTE- L I T T L E) of what you fancy can do you good,
and b) with main meals, and not snack on them, as it will keep your blood-sugar levels more stable. (they won't peak and trough as sharply.)
Keep a weather eye on your blood sugars. it is really easy to test yourself these days with the excellent testing machines that you can get from chemists, or, via your diabetic specialist nurse. it is quick (as little as five seconds for a result with certain models of testing machine) and quite painless to do the testing.
things have come a long way in recent years.
hope this information helps?

Exersise, just plain old walking is the best for it.
