Got mine from the computer fair near the Arena £45 does just about everything. Six films fit on one DVD.

DVD is just the media (i.e. the disc) the file format on the disc is industry standard. The reason for a DivX (that can exist in many formats) is that it is a compression of the original film.
It is also a good way to keep a hard copy of a film ;) and is smaller so easier to download. There are many different compression rates for DivX, the most famous beeing 'divx'.

Ripping off and encoding DVDs is a long process, you have to tweak your encoders well to have a correct result.
Windows' Media Player is a terrible media player, for DivX I can only encourage you to use DivX player, WMP is also a lot heavier on ressources.

I had a look at them players from WHSmiths, but according to the detials on the box, they don't play DivX.
It's definitely something that will pick and that already has, as more & more download films. A day of download and you have your film, for nothing. DivX exists for as long as DVDs have, if not before.
It is also very useful when you record a program on TV on your computer, the precess means you can taylor the compression and for a TV show (from Sky or cable) you can lower the quality as the original program won't be as good.

DivX is also the format in which a lot of Digi cams record their videos with. My camera records in DSH MJPEG which is a DivX format.

If anyone wants to venture at 'copying' your DVD Videos onto your computer, try RobotRip+Gardian Knob and encode it in DivX 5.1.1. :)

Oh, and sharing your DivX is baaaad !

The quality of the compression is awful. I think you need some glasses if you think they are as good as the raw format.

They might be good quality, but theyre still not a patch on genuine DVD quality. Theres no such thing as lossless compression.

There is, you know.

Providing that within the file to be compressed there are at least 2 unused binary values, and a place in the file that has 3 or more identical values, lossless compression is possible.

I agree you have only got to listen to a good mp3 and an original recording I doubt the human ear could tell the difference.

I think you need to trade the bike in for a new HiFi, Mick !

Reminds me of a mate I once worked with who insisted that his dvd containing four Rocky films was perfect quality.

Btw, when is this computer fair on at the Arena, Biker? I'll have a wander around next time it's on.

depends what bit-rate your talking with the MP3's, anything thats 256kb/s or above won't sound any different to a CD, no matter what system you've got... 192kb/s is pretty much perfect... all those things on kazaa and such at 128kb/s you can tell the difference, but if you rip your own stuff at 192 or 256, or download them from reliable sources, then your sorted!...

as for whoever said there are lots of different types of DIVX, umm... no there isnt ;) there's one DIVX, its called DIVX... there are other "MPEG4" codecs, such as XVID... but they are different to DIVX...

its also the same with DIVX as with MP3, it all depends on the compression settings... you can get a prefectly good DVD quality movie in DIVX with AC3 sound at about 1.2Gb and you wont tell the difference... DVD's are MPEG2, generally with AC3 and/or DTS audio... MPEG2 is hardly an improvement size wise on MPEG1, its hardly compressed what so ever, its pretty much raw... so obviously there's room for compression, all things like DIVX and XVID do are combine certain areas into chunks of colour...

so say theres a scene thats in a dark alley and a lot of the screen is black, it can compress big sections of the screen into one chunk of black, instead of thousands of pixels... hence that saves space...
