On Sunday 1st July there's a bumper line up in store for the next Americana Night at Under The Boardwalk. Doors open at 8pm and entry is free. We'll be starting a little early this month as it's a five act line up that includes:
The Silver Tree Club
Imagine the Happy Mondays doing Alt-Country. Say hello to The Silver Tree Club. From Leeds, The Silver Tree Club were formally known as The Tenderloin. and were originally put together about six years ago by Nick Wallace (piano and vocals), Mike Hurst (accordion, Rhodes and vocals) and Dave Bertram (guitar and vocals). Dave came up with the name Tenderloin after a district of his native San Francisco. Nick and Mike continued with the name back in West Yorkshire and continued to write play and perform in the area. Although Nick is the only original member of Tenderloin they continued to evolve with long standing members Ged Crefin (drums, percussion and guitar), Don Mort (guitar and vocals) completeing the current line up along with Scottish singer/songwriter Neil McLarty who had been performing bass duties. Having now merged into one outfit, hence the new name, Neil McLarty's own material has been introduced into the Silver Tree Club's set, and you can also expect to see him taking on acoustic guitar and harmonica duties. Heavily influenced by Americana and Alternative Country, Neil's music is often compared to artists such as Steve Earle and Ryan Adams.
The Silver Tree Club are making their first visit to Sheffield under the new name, having previously proved very popular with those who've caught their explosive live set. They're are set to release the single Shakin' on Post Records very soon, but the experience of seeing that song on stage is something not to be missed. As one of the quotes from their flyers reads "Stage presence ain't the half of it. The raw emotion expelled in 'It Must Be Hard' was frightening, and if there's a better way to finish any set than with the blistering 'Shakin'', well i ain't seen it yet...".

Wilful Missing
Bradford's Wilful Missing have existed for 4 years. During 2006 the four piece cultivated their sound. Having flirted with various indie-type genres they are now focusing on their mellower side with acoustic guitar and mandolin more to the fore, a change of direction that has helped them shine out from the crowd. Although with strong indie roots, the influence of the likes of The Byrds, Neil Young and Bright Eyes show through.
In 2007 the band have been recording their latest songs, between road testing them live around Yorkshire with gigs mostly in Bradford, Leeds, York and Sheffield and festival appearances in Bradford and the Yorkshire Dales. The band have previously supported New York's Dufus and played with Sheffield's own Neil McSweeney, who himself recommends the band highly.
"Bradford's Wilful Missing seem to be instinctive elaborators of melody, and a rewarding texture appears to develop effortlessly in their work." (www.LeedsMusicScene.net)

Julian Jones
Julian Jones is a country influenced singer/songwriter from Sheffield who has been performing in various bands for the last ten years. His main band was the Lazy Dollies whom he fronted and wrote songs for. Following their split after 2 albums and some high profile support slots (including Oasis), Julian composed a solo album of new and old songs. One Shoe On And One Shoe Off was well received and he is currently working on the follow up release after playing a string of support slots with Ray Davies on his recent UK tour. Julian is also a member of the Acoustic Angels, who often play to full houses at Sheffield's Boardwalk on the last Friday of every month. In 2005 he opened for Richard Hawley at his last gig at The Leadmill.

Paul Handyside
London based singer/songwrighter Paul Handyside was founder member of eighties indie group HURRAH! who had several releases on Arista and Kitchenware records. Paul then went on to tour and record with fellow Kitchenware label-mate Martin Stephenson. In 2001 he formed Bronze and released two albums "The statue in the stone " and "A common prayer" blending west coast harmonies with the energy of The Who. Now solo, Paul's songwriting is a mixture of Americana, pop, gospel, folk and 19th century hymns. Paul is currently recording his first solo album with producer Rob Tickell. Paul has covered "Bachelor kisses" for the tribute album "Love goes on anyway", to celebrate the songwriting talent of the late Grant McLennan from the GoBetweens.

Buswell
A reduced version of Swindon's Buswell will be visiting Sheffield as part of their UK tour. Usually a four piece, guitarist Shaun and pianoist Becky are playing a string of dates throughout late June/early July in support of the bands 3rd single 'Sleep' from the current album 'Buy Me New Shoes". First single 'Let Me Love' was playlisted on MTV2's Americana Playlist, and appeared on XFM and BBC radio as well as reaching number 1 on the Amazon Hot 100 pre-release CD singles.
Growing up in Swindon, Shaun Buswell’s initial plan was to perform as a solo artist, but before long it had evolved into a full band that use a core of piano, acoustic guitar, bass, drums, voices and samples to create a heady mix of provocative and intense pieces with introspective lullabies. Various additional musicians have performed and recorded with Buswell over the years, and continue to do so today.
