View Full Version : The Last Laugh Comedy Club is moving!
lastlaugh 22-06-2007, 10:05 After two wonderful years at The Roundhouse, this is our last weekend!
From July 6th, The Last Laugh Comedy Club will be reopening every Friday and Saturday night in it's new home in The Memorial Hall, Barkers Pool, Sheffield. It's bigger, brighter, nicer, comfier, with better food, and next to a taxi rank! Great line ups are guaranteed, with a dance afterwards. The Roundhouse has been great, and if you've been down, then thanks, and we're now looking forward to a new chapter for the north's longest running comedy clubs.
Guderian 22-06-2007, 10:44 Good luck at the new venue.
P.S Do I get free tickets?
lastlaugh 22-06-2007, 11:13 Thanks very much.
PS No :-)
JarvisCocker 22-06-2007, 11:15 Great news, good luck. It's a much better venue, more central and closer to better bars etc for people to go for drinks before or after. I'll definitely be coming down.
Jackdanny 22-06-2007, 11:35 no, you must be having a laugh?

lastlaugh 01-08-2007, 18:30 Hi Will
Sorry you don't like the new venue, there is undeniably a different feel to The Roundhouse which was a little more "spit and sawdust" than The Memorial Hall. I understand that, that is how some people prefer their comedy clubs, and is the main reason we keep running the fantastic night at The Lescar (Ross Noble soon..).
The Memorial Hall actually has a capacity of about 50 more than The Roundhouse, and has a lot brighter feel about it. In all honesty, as someone who hires the room, we've been very impressed with The City Hall staff, and we're pleased that our customers are being offered quick service, and a much better menu.
All in all, though the move was forced on us when SIV elected to turn The Roundhouse into a gym, we're over the moon with it. Customers would appear to agree with us as numbers for July and August, traditionally quiet times for comedy clubs, are 100% up on last year.
Thanks for your feedback.
LL
We went on a night out to new last laugh comedy club at the city hall room felt a lot better than at ponds forge place, food was good, and room was clean and had a carpet.
we had better seats at city hall as when we went to roundhouse one of ou rparties chairs broke when they sat on it.
new place is lot better for tram and ataxis as well, we are going again in august for a birthday night out looking forward to seeing toby again like to see a bloke sweat on stage makes it worth the money.
fozzybronze 01-08-2007, 19:22 When is Ross Noble coming?
happylady 01-08-2007, 20:21 Glad to hear the good reviews. I've had reports from my friend who is a member of the City Hall staff that these nights are going pretty well. Its my birthday on 31 August and we're going that night with friends and I'm looking forward to it especially the meat and tate pie (with Hendersons Relish of course but that's another strand!)

lastlaugh 02-08-2007, 16:31 How strange, some of the comments made about the Last Laugh have been removed.
Maybe because they tell the truth about how it really is, and not from the viewpoint of one of Fosters followers.
Good luck.. oh and the free tickets? no thanks.
Hi Will,
You've still not told us what date you were in? Please can you let me know so that I can bring up the points you made? Obviously, if what you say is true, then I need to get it sorted out.
The free tickets you're turning down are what was offered to you, in good faith as an attempt to make up for a night that you obviously didn't enjoy. I'm sorry you don't want o take us up on that, why not?
LibertyBell 02-08-2007, 16:54 Went to see Richard Morton a few weeks back and was underwhelmed by the evening.
Good points
Reserved table;
Plenty of room;
Nice building
Central Location - taxis/tram/bus no problem
Bad points
Awful "beer";
PA far too loud;
Patronising announcements about not talking during acts. As far as I could see there were no children in there, only adults. They should try treating people accordingly;
ticket price (£15) was excessive for the quality of act - at least food should be included;
Disco was bleedin' awful and far too loud for the size of venue.
Cheers
Its fairly irrelevant to what date we came. I no longer care if things are sorted out.
Its quite obvious from the fact that any messages left on this forum that are not in favour of the Last Laugh are removed, that you don't actually care either.
Good luck.
Blimey, hows that work then - are you suggesting Last Laugh may be bribing the mods?
I'm going on Saturday for the first time, will report back...
Patronising announcements about not talking during acts. As far as I could see there were no children in there, only adults. They should try treating people accordingly;
I've been to the Last Laugh a few times and some selfish people DO talk during the acts and it's bloody annoying, so I welcome those announcements.

I'm with you 100% on that one!

Im in the undercover comedy police and there has been no report of any funny business. (Ta raaa) I cant be classed as a fan of Fosters cos i cant drink on duty. (Bum tisshh)
In evidence of said dispute however Mr Cannaby ought to blow into this hear humourliser in order to detect whether laughter is being suppressed for gain as i found the Fosterbod to be a shining wit - unlike Mr Cannaby.
Fosterkid was in Asda the other day carrying chicken wings and breasts and thighs and drumsticks - presumably with a view to assembling a chicken, cos they do that sort of thing in Harley-
For a mega star bestowed with the freedom of Harley and its four houses 2 pubs a whippet and 39 chicken sheds he was courteous and polite in the true British tradition of stiff upper lips - my missus goes for that sort of thing - she loves stiff upper lips.
He also had some Linda McArtney burgers - i know she was big into recycling but i think thats a bit beyond a joke.
Anyways - i digress Foster is funnier than John Cleese and the python team or Frazier of Black adder and all them - Its a while since i saw him but they say a leper cant change his socks.
In the meantime lets hope we can convert Mr Cannaby (as in kick him over the posts at headingly)
If only i had been offered those free tickets being the son of a poor parson cross woodcutter i would have snatched his hand off -
i am at a loose end now they have shut the Meadow pub (The greatest loss to Sheffield since Wards Brewery) so i may while away the hours trying to find a corner in the round house.
If only i could muster the price of the tickets or barter with some chicken spares........
If only i could find the way to the compassionate side of the Fosterkid between the cornflake aisle and the 2 for 1,s then perhaps i could have those tickets for me and our lass when she comes off dialasis...

Well, to be fair, I think it's fairly obvious that we do care. That's why I've asked you to tell us what night these things happened, so that I can address them. That's why I've offered you free tickets so that we can try and recompense you for what was an obviously poor experience. It's fairly easy to come on an open forum and slag us off, but to then poo poo our attempts to put it right seems a bit mean.
C'mon Will, PM me and tell me what night you were there, and let me speak to the staff about their actions that night. You'll understand how the more cynical amongst the readers may think that you just have an agenda that you want to push, and that what you're saying may not have happened.
Liberty Bell, please PM me too. Let's get you all back in and try to give you a better night.
fnkysknky 02-08-2007, 22:20 As someone else mentioned - when is Mr Noble at the Lescar? :)
lastlaugh 03-08-2007, 05:45 Very soon. We'll announce the dates to our mailing list on August 10th. If you'd like to be added to that list, just PM me. These dates will sell out in a day, so get on the list if you'd like to get on.
Camrat78 03-08-2007, 05:59 I for one cant wait to try the new venue. As someone who had been 7 - 8 times to the roundhouse and loved it, it'll be good to see what the new place is like. Can't judge anything without trying it first!
fnkysknky 03-08-2007, 06:59 I went to see Jeff Green in the Memorial Hall last year, bit of a weird venue and the queue for the beer was ridiculous but I presume it was different people running it. Still had a good night though :)
Blimey, are Last Laugh bribing the mods?
No, but as usual we simply don't allow unsubstantiated allegations.
Any news on booking Nick Doody please ?
logiebaird 03-08-2007, 07:54 No, but as usual we simply don't allow unsubstantiated allegations.
Hey - Im a serious aligator ... the evidence will be on the Asda CCTV - Fosterkid said it was stuff for barbcue but the components were all poultry related and necessary for DIY assembly of a Frankencock.
I had several rubbish nights at the thingy on dates i cant quite recollect so i need my free tickets!!! Cmon Foster divvy up

100% with you Lastlaugh. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but its not fair to you and the staff at City Hall to have such negative assertions made without anything to back it up.
I would have thought that if someone felt so negative about something it would have been better to pm you individually instead of bringing this into a public arena.

To be fair happylady, my money's fairly safe. Will and I both know that he's never bought tickets for The Last Laugh, as he worked with us for eighteen months at The Roundhouse. Some of the staff at The Roundhouse were upset when they heard the club was moving, as were we at first, and it obviously still rankles.
I notice there's been some heavy editing of Will's posts, to remove some of the vitriol and I'm pleased about that as I didn't really understand it.
I don't really understand how you can refer to the stunning Memorial Hall as "aweful" (sic) and "poxy". It's gorgeous and the city and SIV are rightly proud of this flagship venue.
LibertyBell 04-08-2007, 10:33 I've been to the Last Laugh a few times and some selfish people DO talk during the acts and it's bloody annoying, so I welcome those announcements.
Fair comment but do they have to be so loud?
lastlaugh 04-08-2007, 10:44 No they don't, and that's been one of our challenges over the past few weeks. In four weeks, we've had four different PA set ups as we try to find the best way of running amplication in a room that was built a long time before speaker cabs were invented. Last night was pretty much bang on, so we hope to have the mix right now.

Ta for this info Lastlaugh - seems some people are sore losers! Am looking to celebrating my birthday at the City Hall and its a building us Sheffielders are very proud of. Will report back on my night out on the 31st and if there is any criticism it will be presented in a positive form.
I went along last night with my boyfriend and a couple of friends. We had a great night and the venue really is lovely. The staff were friendly and the acts were very entertaining. My only complaint would be the volume of the music before and between the acts. It was so loud that even sat next to our friends,shouting directly into their ear drums they still could not hear a word we were saying! Which was a real shame as we had come to the comedy club as an alternative to clubbing - so that we could talk to each other!
A great night but don't expect to talk to any of the people you are with!

Ouch - that saddens me.
Along with Boroughgal, I was going to be organising a forum meet there sometime in the near future. One of the main reasons I like comedy clubs is that in between comics, you can actually converse with the people you've gone out with - because again, like you Jazle, that's one of the main reasons I hate clubbing. What's the point in going out if you can't have a laugh with your friends?
People will always find something to talk about both before and in between spots - it's a comedy club - there are usually going to be funny people visiting yah? Think about it. :)
I was really looking forward to trying out the new venue (although I was sorry to hear that it was no longer at The Roundhouse, but fully understand that things need to change and are not always under our control) but this has now kinda put me off somewhat.
We went to Lescar for the first time last week. Spit and sawdust it might be, but we had a bloody good night. The room was air conditioned, smoke-free (obviously) the music was quietly playing in the background - allowing the people I'd taken and I to have laughs of our own in between the great comedians. I really enjoyed that. Being slowly deafened with someone else's choice of music is my idea of hell.
Think I'll wait to see how the sound/music thing pans out before making a booking.
Ava Vidal rocks btw :love:
Stagey x
I went last night and had a good night - nice venue, funny acts, good laugh, disco after.
I could pick faults such as poor choice of beer, lack of Hendersons with pie, disco music too cheesey but you simply don't worry about that kind of stuff at a comedy club you just enjoy yourself! And our group had no problems talking to one another - maybe WE were loud?!
Announcements were done by the DJ who also introduced the compere and generally maintained an atmosphere before/after the show and during the breaks so worked well in my mind. Bar shut whilst the comics were on stage to discourage people wandering around but you could get 4 pint jugs of lager so wasn't a problem.

Interested to read your write up and sounds good. We're going with a group in a couple of weeks and have got tickets. Did you have a problem getting a table together? Do you have to get there early to be sure of a table?

Well, if your ticket says its for a table then i'm sure you will certainly get a table.
When you arrive they check your ticket and tick you off and a member of staff shows you to your table. Wasn't sure whether the table numbers were allocated in advance or when you arrived.
I would suggest if you are going in a group and want to sit together you don't get there too last minute just in case. Also bear in mind they sell every seat at that table, so if your group doesn't fill a table then you may well be sharing with others - just like you would in a theatre auditorium really.
Doors open at least an hour before the show begins, and the bars are open from the beginning and they have background music on, so don't worry about getting bored if you get there early! Also when you get to your table the staff come to take any food orders required (all snacky stuff such as pie & peas, nachos or chip butties and nothing costs over a fiver) and you have the choice of eating either before the show or during the first interval.

thanks andy C, glad you enjoyed the night out hopefully thats what everyone will regard the last laugh comedy club as not just the elements that make it up.
the disco is a bit cheesey, but we hope its easy listening as well, the food is now all fresh and nicely served, the comedy is still as it always has been top quality, and the venue is the best Sheffield has to offer in terms of location, hospitality and service.
The pre show announcements are essential, as we know and observe every night not everyone has been to a comedy club before, and the requests for not talking during the acts are to ensure that everyone does get to hear all the material that the acts have got to deliver.
We will continue to work on the sound system but as LAST LAugh reports this weekend we had in system MK IV and it appears that we have arrived at great coverage of all the room, whilst maintaing great sightlines of the stage and of course not damaging any part of the Memorial hall building.
Lets hope you all keep enjoying the shows.
happylady 06-08-2007, 11:59 thanks for that info ANDY
lastlaugh 08-08-2007, 08:13 As someone else mentioned - when is Mr Noble at the Lescar? :)
Tickets go on sale today (Wednesday) at 11.30 in person only at Forever Changes Records on Hickmott Road. Two dates only, ninety people a night, little warm up gigs for his tour. Ross does these every year, and they are very special nights.
Fantomas 08-08-2007, 08:24 What are the dates he's playing? Don't want to nip along for tickets to find I can't make it anyway!
edit: for those who want to know I've just rung Forever Changes, he's playing 27th and 28th August, tickets £10 + booking fee.
happylady 01-09-2007, 14:09 Went to Last Laugh last night for my birthday. Had a great time. Acts were fab as was the compere. Am thinking of organising a trip there for Xmas.
I did say in my earlier thread that would give feedback so here goes:
1. Thought it was a little on the cramped side but understand that they need to get as many people in as poss to keep ticket prices down. To be honest after we got used to it wasn't really a problem and the cosiness added to the atmosphere which was excellent;
2. Speaker system - thought that the music at the beginning at the night and during intervals was a bit too loud. Especially at the beginning it could have been turned down a bit to allow people to have a chat to their mates - it was a bit intrusive and made conversation difficult;
3. Thought City Hall staff were excellent and very professional and a big :thumbsup: to them;
4. Thought disco at the end was great and not cheesy as others have commented - all age groups seemed to be having a great time.:banana:
Many thanks to all who provided us with a great night and was well worth the ticket price!:clap::clap::clap:

Many thanks to all who provided us with a great night and was well worth the ticket price!:clap::clap::clap:Hi happy Lady glad you enjoyed the night out at the last laugh, it is now coming together with all the elements involved, the venue is fab, the acts are the countrys best, the disco does try to please all those present.
The volume issue is one that we appreciate your comments on, as the guy who engineers the sound and does the disco after, I will be more attentive to the levels and try to give the audience time to chat in the early part of the night, it does need a bit of volume in the middle of the show to keep the pace and atmosphere going.
Just getting ready at the city hall now for another great big night.
happylady 01-09-2007, 18:27 Hi Foxprom, appreciate your comment about keeping pace during the night and can understand this. Have a good night!
lastlaugh 05-09-2007, 16:55 Glad you liked it Happylady. We're happy in our new home. There are inevitably issues that you can't always get right, but we do try. Seating is cosy, as we find that the fewer gaps there are in the crowd, the more likely folk are to laugh. As for the volume, that is our bugbear. All the sound comes from the speakers at the front of the stage, so inevitably it's going to be slightly louder there than at the back. We'd love to be able to spread the sound a bit, but you're not allowed to just go screwing things into the walls of such a lovely building!
Overall the venue, service, grub etc we're over the moon with. The acts have always been great....
