well, it depends on the problems, which distro he's using? (redhat, debian, ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, FreeBSD, Centos, etc....) :)

And there was me thinking I knew more Open Source stuff than I thought, I nearly started calling myself a BSD geek!

Bloom1961, don't worry, Ghozer does know what he's talking about, he obviously couldn't brain at that moment in time coz he had the dumb. :hihi:

What is your hubby serving? He may be better off starting with Ubuntu first.

Ubuntu is for babies :( get a real OS like PCLinuxOS (even easier to set up) or something..

i've been using fedora for years & red hat before that, i run a server at home & have run internet servers for a few years too, im happy to help, so get him to pm me with the specific problems, i'll see what i can do to help. theres usually stuff on google for just about any possible error & plenty of tutorials for anything he could want to do.

try the howtos on http://tldp.org/

STOP!!

Somone's come for help and it's degenerating into a Distro Choice thread again! I'm personally not keen on FC5 - but if he needs help with it, I have experience with it.. a lot of experience with it unfortunately for me.

bloom1961:

Find out what specific problems he is having, or get him to post them here himself and we will be glad to try and help.

Ubuntu is for babies

Read the OP. If they're having difficulty then Ubuntu is probably a good choice.

Hi, I have installed FC5 several times now and from what I can see it is working ok. I have my own domain name registered but I dont seem to be able to get it propogated on the main DNS servers. What I want to know is how to achieve that. The web page is served ok on all the internaly networked machines but can not be seen by any external machines. Thanks

If it's a DNS issue then have a look at http://www.dnsreport.com/ :)

Are you sure this is a DNS issue and not a firewall issue? If you use DNS Report on your domain (above) what do you get? If all looks normal then perhaps you just aren't letting people outside in through your firewall?

I host my dns off-site, and point it to my IP address.. and port forward internally..

The link in the post is my wifes ebay shop, nothing to do with my server.
I have a seperate registered domain name.
I have tried it with the firewall turned off but it makes no difference.
Here is the link to the HOWTO I have been using so you can see the way I have set up the server, http://www.brennan.id.au/index.html

Thanks

its a problem with your dns hosting, you need to contact your dns host.

I concur.

DNS Check (http://www.checkdns.net/quickcheck.aspx?domain=www.hazelscrafts.com&detailed=1) returns a host not found error.
