View Full Version : Meadowhall - Do they employ people over 21?
ryanblade 21-06-2007, 04:57 PM Does anybody know if Meadowhall employ people that are over the age of 21
for postions such as sales assistant / advisor. Im 22 and have done retail work before and im looking to get back into it as i enjoy it but i have handed out around 70 CVs and so far havent had one repley i have a good CV so i dont really understand why apart from the fact that im over 21 so they would have to pay me £ 5.35 per hour rather then the £.3.65 - £ 4.50 they pay to people under 21.
fox20thc 21-06-2007, 05:02 PM Depends on what work you want, is it full or part time and whats on your CV. What you believe to be a good CV may not be what they want. Better to ask for application forms
Most CVs are binned these days, my last job I went for they specifically didn't want one.
Ingela 21-06-2007, 05:22 PM Honestly? If the punctuation and spelling in your CV is in the same as in your post then it would have gone straight into the bin.
With recent laws employers are now only allowed to ask for your age if it's a legal requirement, eg, to work behind a bar.

Yes but at meadowhall they do ask for Cv's Do you send a covering letter?
sam1987 13-07-2007, 02:50 AM I worked in retail in meadowhall for a long time. A lot of CV's go straight in the bin. Ask for the manager or some 1 important so they can see u for themselfs. And it depends on wot shop ur going in. If ur trying places like JD sports uv got no chance unless ur going for a supervisor job coz its a young persons shop. Ur best off trying house of fraiser n debenhams as they look for good staff rather than loads of staff. i no ur thinking what do u no but i was manager of a shop in meadowhall for 5 years so i no how it works.
tom3t0 13-07-2007, 08:00 AM interesting point, the only people i know who work there are under 21 and most of them are under 18, and they are all on minimum wage (maybe wiht a few extra pence if they are lucky)
Surely it's the individual shops that recruit staff, not Meadowhell itself?
Anyway - first of all, did you 'target' your CV for each shop or type of business? I.e. if you're applying for a rtail job in HMV did you bring out your interest in music and film, or a sports shop - did you mention your sporting skills?
Don't forget you're competing for jobs at the 'commodities' end of the market where there are many people applying, fewer jobs and hence lots of choice for the people doing the selection. become a 'face and name' to the people ding the selection - hand your CV / application form to the shop manager, for example.
Best of luck.

Im not trying for JD sports im trying at places like USC, Republic,Burton,NEXT
Debenhams, and Zobia. How do you apply for jobs if CV's go in the bin most of the stores at Meadowhall ask for a CV and cover letter. it's fustrating because i really want to work in fashion Retail but it seems a lot of stores employ people under 21 because they only have to pay them £4.50 an hour at most.
Holza1987 21-07-2007, 02:37 PM Whilst looking for jobs at meadowhall most state pay is 5:35+ so i don't see where your getting that from.

its like saying a product is under £500 = £499.99
£5.35 + = £5.40 normally
Malky 21-07-2007, 07:06 PM Its not that long since the minimum wage didn’t start until 18, my son used to work at All: Sport for just over £3/hr it’s a rip off.
At the ripe old age of 19 he was told he was to old for an apprenticeship in the car industry, they were looking for 16 year olds.

banesmabes 23-07-2007, 12:47 PM Submitting speculative CVs is always a hit and miss operation (mostly miss). You can hand out hundreds and not get anything from it. The first thing I would suggest would be to remove any reference to your age from your CV. This not only includes your DOB, but also for instance, the date you left school.
However, what I would suggest is going onto the websites of the companies you are interested in and looking at their job pages. You really need to identify if there are jobs going in the first place. A lot of these places will probably prefer you to complete an application form for a specific job, which you can also usually do over their website. Alternatively they will usually have information on how to submit a speculative application. You're much better doing this via the web, as the application will likely go to their Head Office HR department who are likely to treat it in a much more professional manner. If you just hand a CV in at the store, it's unlikely to reach the right person, and even if it does they may be busy when they are handed it, and then forget all about it. Whereas the first thing they are likely to do when they have a vacancy will be to contact HR.
