View Full Version : Just a couple of random question do with MySQL/phpbb.
eagle_eyes 21-06-2007, 11:16 HI
I use dataflame to host my forum, my forum runs on phpbb. I want to check how much space i have left i know its probably more than i need at moment but just curious.
I logged into my dataflame account on the right it says:
Disk Space Usage 4.80 Megabytes
MySQL Disk Space 0.70 Megabytes
Disk space available 195.20 Megabytes
It obviously clearly says disc space available 195.20 megs, but becuase i use MySQL it says 0.70 megs, so that whats confusing me. Im new to the whole thing.
Lets say if i wanted to transfer my host package would it be possible without losing the threads user registrations etc?
When someone posts a image in the threads which i cant seem to stop people doing, does it use the space on my host or does it direct to the link they got the image from?
Probably wouldnt ever need to do this, but if in the future someone wanted to advertise on my forum can i still create ad-banners (bare in mind its not vBulletin but phbpp).
Oh and finally i have so currently disabled signature because some users put offensive pics in there, i can seem to find the option where i can edit his profile.
OMG thats alot of question. So thank you all.

The explanation of these figures would have to come from your host. There is no standard explanation. I would guess that the Disk Space Usage includes the MySQL Disk Space looking from the numbers however.
Lets say if i wanted to transfer my host package would it be possible without losing the threads user registrations etc?
It should be perfectly possible. Take the site off line. Back up the DB. Change the DNS, Load the DB onto the new server. Setup the new site (adjusting any config files required) and turn the site on. You would probably want to change the TTL value of the DNS to a lower value than the standard 86400 seconds (1 Day) to keep the down-time to a minimum. This figure determines how long users could be sent to the old server after a change to the DNS.
When someone posts a image in the threads which i cant seem to stop people doing, does it use the space on my host or does it direct to the link they got the image from?
The chances are that it is not being hosted on your site, you can check by right clicking on the image, select "View image" and check the location bar to see which site the image is hosted on.
Probably wouldnt ever need to do this, but if in the future someone wanted to advertise on my forum can i still create ad-banners (bare in mind its not vBulletin but phbpp).
There will be something you can add on to phpBB to do this, I'm sure. It would generally not matter which host you were on. If you choose an add-on which has security problems then you may have a good host that will turn your site off before it gets hacked.

Eh?

Disk Space useage = the ammount of space all your files are using, your website, and the forum...
MySQL Disk Space = how much space your PHPBB Forum DATABASE is taking up...
Disk Space Available = the total space you have left, for both files and database use.. Im assuming your on a 200mb package looking at these figures..
Lets say if i wanted to transfer my host package would it be possible without losing the threads user registrations etc?
It is possible, but not for the novice user, im willing to offer any assistance if you should need it
When someone posts a image in the threads which i cant seem to stop people doing, does it use the space on my host or does it direct to the link they got the image from?
You can set it to NOT allow image uploads (its in the boards/posts preferences) and so to force them to direct link only... if they DO 'attach' images or files, this will take up YOUR hosting space
Probably wouldnt ever need to do this, but if in the future someone wanted to advertise on my forum can i still create ad-banners (bare in mind its not vBulletin but phbpp).
I believe there's a plug-in to allow this, or you could HTML frame it, and place the ad at the top..
Oh and finally i have so currently disabled signature because some users put offensive pics in there, i can seem to find the option where i can edit his profile.
you need to go to the user management, search the user you want to edit, then in the preferences where you can change thier password/email address etc, the signature option is in there...
OMG thats alot of question. So thank you all.
Lol, its no problem at all ;)
eagle_eyes 21-06-2007, 15:43 I was in the middle of typing a response and closed the bloody window.
Thanks for the detailed answers Ghozer and richard. liam1412 cleared up the amount of space on msn (thanks for everyting).
Most of it does seem very complicated like:
richard

but at least its possible, so if i ever need to do it, ill ask for help or pay someone.
richard what i said about the signtures Ghozer cleared that up.
I will have to check about the html plug-in dont know what it is currently.
Is forthegamers your forum Ghozer?
sorry if this response is all over the place, its just i already typed a response and closed the window.
