View Full Version : Reg Vardy Ecclesall Road - ADVICE PLEASE!
rmjohns2 20-06-2007, 09:45 Hi,
My Renault Clio is due it's first MOT in a few weeks. To keep it's service history, I'm planning to take it to Reg Vardy on Ecclesall Road. However, I've read a lot of horror stories in previous posts about poor service / charging for faults that are not there etc ETC
Has anyone had an MOT done there before?? What were your expeciances??
Thanks,
Rich
Ousetunes 20-06-2007, 09:49 Re-arrange these words:
barge-pole, touch, Reg, wouldn't, I, with, Vardy, a.
Other words would be asterixed out. However, to give you an idea, one such word rhymes with bankers.
Sir_Fred 20-06-2007, 09:58 They're crap rip-off merchants. Leave em well alone!
rmjohns2 20-06-2007, 10:03 Where do you think I should take it?
I also want to keept it's service history?
Rich
We bought a second hand car from then a few year's ago (the one on peniston rd) to cut a long story short it was a shed, they incorrectly identyfied the engine being buggerd as a leaking valve. with it being under warrenty we managed to get them to replace the cracked gear box (but only after our own mechanic identifyed the fault was not a leaking seal) after losing all faith in the mechanics there we had the engine rebuilt by our own mechanic (it was goosed) .. dont go near them.. they are a set of sharks.. and they did not give us a penny towards the cost of rebuilding the engine that was goosed when they sold us the car
try motor mates on penistone rd industrial est.. they rebuilt our engine and did a fantastic job, there great lad's and we will only take the car to them now,,
jinnertomcat 20-06-2007, 10:09 Mrs JTC also has a Renault. When its first service was due she phoned Reg Vardy and Ezra Sugden in Worksop for a price. Ezra's were loads cheaper so she went there. Great customer service, very friendly staff, and they do a good job. We have always gone back to them since.
ItIsNow! 20-06-2007, 10:31 One of the WORST car-buying decisions I ever made was when I bought one from Reg Vardy.( Gawd - it hurt even TYPING that name..)
But I had a very good solicitor who wiped the floor with them.:hihi:
carlas_cat 20-06-2007, 10:33 We bought our car from the Penistone Road branch 2 years ago. After about 3 weeks the crank shaft sensor went. As the car was still under warranty we took the car back, and they said to diagnose the problem it needed to go to Eccelsall Road. Now, when we bought the car, they put a full years MOT on it, so after 3 weeks you would imagine that it would still be OK. The Eccelsall Road branch came back with a list as long as your arm, including a bald tyre and defective worn brakes. Needless to say, after several threats to report them to the ministry of transport they put every thing right free of charge, and even washed it for us, but take our car there for a service? Don't make me laugh!!
skipskap 20-06-2007, 10:37 Don't let them (or any dealer for that matter) have you believe that you have to take your car to a Renault dealer to maintain the service records. Many garages are Renault approved, not just the main dealers. The main issue is that Renault parts are used, which most garages can get hold of, and unbelievedly, cheaper than Reg Vardy.
i used to work there - dont do it.
rmjohns2 20-06-2007, 11:04 Hi,
I didn't realise that!!
Does anyone know any Renault approved dealers. I'm in Hillsborough, so somewhere close by would be preferred.
Rich
They charged us £40 to put some house weather strip under the bonnet of our Megane Scenic. Said it would stop the problem of moisture getting into the spark plugs, which had caused a misfire. Absolute rubbish.
It ws my missus car, and she agreed to the work being done, so it was too late to do anything about it when I found out.
I wouldnt buy another Renault because of them and what they did to the reputation of that company. Never again.
Take it to any VAT registered garage, preferably one thats recommended to you and then as long as they follow the service schedule and you get your book stamped you will retain the history...

what about nationwide on braodfield road?
If just your MOT, i'd recommend DOT MOT on Olive Grove road. They only do MOT's, so won't find unnecessary work to be done for your car to pass it.

I was also recommended this company but it was too far for me to take the car, so I took it to one on Halfway Inudstrial Estate, next door to Grahams Tyres. As above they only do MOT's and the car passed.
rmjohns2 20-06-2007, 11:30 Is it renault approved?

An MOT isn't the same thing as a service. You don't get a stamp in your service book. They perform no work on your car. It's simply a safety inspection. You don't need to go anywhere that is Renault approved. Hope this helps.
rmjohns2 20-06-2007, 11:47 Hi,
But don't they need to use Renault parts if something need replaceing?
I thought if non Renualt parts are used then it effects the service history??

I wouldn't worry too much about that. As long as the servicing is done by a competent, VAT registered mechanic using genuine Renault parts any mechanical warranty on the car will remain valid.
In fact I believe it is now illegal for manufacturers to insist that routine servicing be carried out by an 'approved' mechanic as a condition of the warranty.
Just be sure you get the service history book properly stamped, signed and dated, - and endorsed with the mileage by the firm you take it to; - and do insist on an itemised invoice for the work done.
Manufacturers make their money from inflated prices for 'genuine' parts, and most dealerships make fat profits from inflated servicing charges.

avoid reg vardy they are utter ****e their mechanics are a joke. we had a year old megane in the uk it went in for a rattle"one of many" came back out with extensive trim damage seat and door trims with deep scratches as if they were trying to **** us off from complaining about rattles.they tried to rip off with a £1000 sevice bill stating unneccesary work had to be done.Every time we visited eccelsall road they were unhappy people at their sevice desk renault are partly to blame for poor quality cars. Gladly all this is behind me ,sat at home in western australia with a fault free year old corrolla tucked in my garage:) :)
muddywolf 20-06-2007, 12:12 I took my clio for a 36K mile service, which should include the aux belt change (even says so in the service book) I asked to confirm if it was going to be done and they said something like "no, its a 6 hour job and best done at 72K with the cam!" the whole reason the aux belt change is at 36K is because if that goes it takes the cam belt out, so even reg vardy/evan harlshaw or whatever they called now wont stick to the service plan. http://www.yozzasport.co.uk/ is suprose to be good if you dont mind a short drive.
viper123 20-06-2007, 14:23 Do not go anywhere near RV I went there once, is a long story but take my word for it STAY AWAY.I got talking to someone who used to work there a while ago and he left because of there practices. He as well as I reported them to the MOT. They dam near killed me. And if they are reading this and they want to take me to court for slander. Go for it make my day.
Sorry i am going off on one.
i feel the post has been fully answered now.
has anyone actually received good service (i'm just interested).
sierraman 20-06-2007, 14:31 I wouldn't take a skateboard to Reg Vardy on Ecclesall Road. I speak from experience after buying a new Megane from them in 2001. They are the most inept bunch of buffoons I have ever come across. I ended up at Gordon Lamb's, marginally better but not much. I'd never buy another Renault because of this.
auto98uk 20-06-2007, 14:34 They are terrible
I had to use them regularly for a while for our works vehicles, to list a few problems we had:
Took van in on a saturday, told it would be ready monday - rang monday to see what time it would be ready - ring tuesday - etc until the next friday, to be told that the van hadn't even gone onto the ramp yet
several "repairs" charged for and never actually done
several things done to the vans which we never actually asked them to do (not related to anything - took it in for a new headlight fitting, and they repaired the brakes.
a service charged for, but not actually done -we took it to another garage that confirmed there were several obvious points that reg vardy had somehow missed (such as a handbrake that didn't work AT ALL which was missed)
When we refused to pay for a couple of these points they tried to take us to court, but they never did cos they knew we would win
edit
Oh hang on - mine was the citroen reg vardy - is that a different one
sierraman 20-06-2007, 14:36 Try these guys ...J S Services-Renault Specialist, Darley Park Service Station Meadow Bank Rd Rotherham, S61 2NF, 01709 550553. I've used them and they are about half the price of the dealer and good if not better. They know Renault cars inside out!!
muddywolf 20-06-2007, 14:42 More than one occasion I have had a appointment booked months in advice, only to take the day off work to take my car down for what should be a 1 day job at most, to only get a call 5 hours later! to say the parts arnt in stock and they will be here tomorrow (they knew what car it was an what needed doing) It could well be just the service dept that is terrible, the parts desk has been fine when I ordered something over the phone (had to give them the exact part number tho, they was no help when I told them what I wated). Stay away from them.
I'm afraid to say that I've had lots of experience of Reg Vardy on Ecclesall Road (now Evans Halshaw) and couldn't wait to stop dealing with them (which meant getting rid of the vehicles, since they are the closest dealers for warranty work etc.
Granted some of the problems were with Renault build quality and PDI rather than the dealers direct, but it took them 5 separate days in the workshop to sort out a dead window motor and central locking problems that were delivered with the vehicle, and almost 2 years to admit that the cause of one of the problems with my Scenic was the panels being fitted incorrectly (and they only admitted that when I got the dealership manager with his jacket off and sleeves rolled up in the workshops to see for himself why I wasn't prepared to pay the bill for their huge list of work that didn't sort the problem out).
I never got the opportunity to find a better Renault dealers or garage I'm afraid- I was so disillusioned I swapped back to SAABs afterwards.
I wouldn't worry too much about your MOT station though- it's a good plan to have the work done somewhere that's not in the same place as the MOT test anyway. That way you can be sure that nobody's creating work for the sake of it.
