Apparently Gordon Brown is to fund 3 "Science Cities" across the north of the UK, in Manchester, Newcastle and York(see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4061755.stm# for the full story). Now I have to ask if these Science Cities are in the correct place. In the recent review of Universities across the world undertaken by Shanghai University, Sheffield University was rated above Manchester, Newcastle and York (see http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2004/Top%20100%20European%20Universities.htm for the top 100 European universities). Nearly all the science departments recieved a 5 or 5* rating in the HEFCE research assessment exercise. This being the case why has the Science City funding gone to these other cities over Sheffield?
