There are a few of these trees where I walk my dogs and they have a kind of fruit? on them each year, they look like green olives but a little bigger. My question is what are they, can the fruit? be used for anything, and when to pick them.

I'm not certain, but it looks like a type of fig tree.
Could it be a greengage? They end up like small plums, and when ripe they're a little bit more yellow than in your picture.
I don't think that they're figs.
Could they be green plums?
Edit: Hmm, Medusa could be onto something: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Greengages.jpg

I agree it's Greengage, nice find they are very tasty members of the plum family
A
Plum / greengage or damson - give it a few months and you'll soon find out :)

yep they look like plums to me bloody good ones as well
My BF (who is rather tired and getting quite silly now) thinks that in the naming of the tree thread someone has to mention that it's probably called Gerald.
He also wonders whether it's a persimmon tree- which is another member of the plum family along with plums, greengages and damsons.

Thanks everyone, I typed greengage plum into Google images and got a picture exactly the same as the one I posted. Mystery over.
If you want to share in the bounty, 1st left off of Foxhill rd, at the end of the road follow the path along side the train tracks, but leave some for me:D

You get a lot of variation, but they are all from the same family 'prunus domestica'. Wild Plum ... http://www-saps.plantsci.cam.ac.uk/trees/plum.htm.
