View Full Version : Walk 24 June 2007
Albert T Smith 19-06-2007, 19:23 The walk is on.
The weather looks changeable but visibility is good, I can see Owler Bar and top of Blackamoor clearly.
I’m suggesting that we catch the 11.10 am. Bus no 273. Sheffield - Derwent – Castleton from Sheffield interchange to Moscar.
The walk being: Moscar – Stanage Edge – Burbage Bridge (Drop point to catch the 284 Bus. (15.40 hrs or 18.10 hrs)) – Green Drive – Fox House (Drop point to catch the 272 Bus (15.29 hrs each hour)) – Longshaw – Padley Gorge – Grindleford. Catching the train (Puffer Billy) to Dore or Sheffield.
Train from Grindleford 15.08 – 16.14 - 17.15
Arrive Sheffield 15.23 – 16.31 – 17.31
************************************************** ******
Subject to the weather conditions or anyone else wanting to organise a different walk.
Two walks are planned for Sunday 24 June 2007. (A) If the weather is clear. (B) If the weather is dry but not clear.
The route(s) being:
(A) No 273 Bus. Leaving Sheffield Interchange at 11.10 to Moscar. Then along the Stanage Edge, Green Drive, to Fox House. Then depending upon the weather and how we feel. Over Blackamoor to Totley Brook or catch the no 272 Bus at Fox House to Sheffield.
(B) No 284 Bus. Leaving Sheffield Interchange at 11.30 to Burbage Bridge. Then Higor Tor, Karl Wark, following the bridle track across the Green Drive to Hound-kirk Road, ( It runs between Ringinglow - Fox House ) to Fox House, then through Longshaw Park to Grindleford Station. To catch a Puffer Billy back to Sheffield Midland Station.
If the weather is fine and clear (A) walk will be suggested. Though this is open to alternative suggestion prior to 11.00. at the Sheffield Interchange Bus Stop.
Is anyone walking tomorrow? Or is it going to be too wet? :(
parkwoman 23-06-2007, 14:20 I'm planning to go if it's not too wet. I guess Albert will post a message early tomorrow morning if it has to be cancelled.
neoteric 23-06-2007, 14:52 I'm planning to go along - not sure if it's A or B walk? Waiting for Albert to post final details - also hoping that the bus driver knows Albert's secret bus stops:)
So are we meeting at the Sheffield Interchange at 11.00am then?

That would appear to be a good plan - then it's either the 273 or 284 dependant on weather conditions.
Albert when are you going to post final details?

The forecast in not very promising regarding dry weather,
I'm fully equipped for any weather, but I don't like to see other people getting wet.
So if it is not lashing down, I'll meet everyone at the Interchange platform? ( I'll find out which( I've tried but can't this evening)) at 10.50.
Then we can decide which or where to go.
Final post between 8.30 - 09.00 Sunday.
canada_girl 23-06-2007, 19:45 I don't think it should be chucking it down; although probably won't be the driest of walks either!
Trying to get some packing out the of the way, so should be able to meet you all tomorrow. Would like to get in one last walk before heading back to Canada! Will check the posting tomorrow in case we've decided to cancel.

canada_girl 24-06-2007, 08:01 OKey Dokey Albert,
Will see you there!
Parkwoman and neoteric, if you've like a ride to the train just let me know. Hubby will be giving me a lift down as he's heading off to work.

Thanks for the offer Canada girl - but I will be doing a gentle stroll down to loosen up - setting of at around 10:30.
Ive decided to risk getting wet! See you there!
Won't be able to make this one unfortunately - hope the weather holds out for you all :)
parkwoman 24-06-2007, 08:41 Thanks for the offer, Canada Girl, but I'll be walking down too. Aiming to set off at 10.30 so will probably join you, Neoteric
neoteric 24-06-2007, 18:07 Despite the rain this was another lovely walk - some fantastic views and lots of scrambling over rocks, jumping streams and general trying to find the driest route through a bog:)
Some early problems with the camera/memory stick meant that a few pictures did not come out - also quite a few raindrops on the lens - just to prove it was really wet.
Again we had the bus dropping us off at one of Albert's unofficial bus stops and then on the way back Albert and Canada Girl tried to get the bus driver to wait until some of the backmarkers came off the moor - unfortunately he didn't wait so we just had to wait at the Fox House Inn for the next one :hihi:
Just finished uploading the pictures here http://picasaweb.google.com/neotericwalks/MoscarStanageEdge24June
A challenging walk today, i feel like ive walked twice the distance we normally do! Really enjoyed it though, the views were fantastic and well worth it! Thanks to Neo for lending me some waterproof leggings, i would have been very soggy without them! Photos came out better than i thought Neo, i quite like the raindrops too they add atmosphere! Thanks to Albert for guiding us up and over the rockiest paths, and through the wettest fields he could find! :hihi:;)
canada_girl 24-06-2007, 20:20 What a fantastic day! Some near misses with Neily falling in the ravine and Albert toppling over while helping Nooka jump over a crevice; although neoteric managed to stay upright the whole time (just barely though)! I crawled through a cave after realizing no one else was brave enough to venture into a very small and wet space! Albert made a fabulous tour guide and bought us all a consolatory drink at the end while waiting for the next bus having just missed the previous one despite my pleas with the bus driver to wait.
Now that I am dry, warm and fed I feel much better! And I think we know can call ourselves a 'proper' walking group having started out in rain that just wouldn't let up.
I've tried getting my pics on picasa, so here's the link: http://picasaweb.google.com/leanne.mercer/StanageEdgeWalk
Some of my pics wouldn't transfer over though - there was a red cross on them; anyone know why? I hope the link works. . . . . .
Off to Canada for three weeks now but will be with you in spirit and will keep up the walking in Vancouver and northern ontario.
Looks like you all had a great time.....!!!! Looking at your pics, Neo, brought back memories of when I was Young and Fit and used to walk up to Stanage from Crosspool, across the edge to Ringinglow Road and back over Fulwood Head to Lodge Moor......
It was a brilliant walk to do in September, when all the heather on the moors was purple..!!!
parkwoman 24-06-2007, 21:17 Agree with everyone else - it was a really good walk with remarkably good views considering the weather. Quite a scramble over the rocks in places - surely that wasn't the proper route, was it? The leap over the stream was a bit scary and the waterproof qualities of Neily's new boots were well and truly tested. ;)
It's a shame your pics of the first part of the walk didn't work, Neoteric. You've lost the ones of those interesting water-filled holes in the rocks with numbers carved by them.
Canada Girl, I think the pics with red crosses are ones you've already transferred - last week's ones maybe? They stay on your card until you delete but Picasa recognises that it's transferred them before.

Yes the link works fine and the photos are great - not sure what the problem is with uploading some of your photos, can you view them on your PC? If so just try editing them and resaving them and try uploading them again.
Have a great time in Canada especially walking in Vancouver and Ontario - looking forward to seeing your pics.
After a night of Cobra and curry at Butlers the previous night i have to admit i didn't feel in the best of health but the sun shone when i looked out this morning and i ran to the station . Waved at Nooka at the platform opposite :)
Tremendous day out despite the challenging conditions and route. It was great fun. Thanks Albert for your singing along the trail (follow the sound, follow the sound) and your detailed knowledge of the vistas . Albert and canada girl were skipping like mountain goats on the final descents.
My new boots were breathable and waterproof until i rolled backwards and knew i was in for a soaking! :hihi:
Snoozing after some toast and got an invite from Binty and crew to join them at Dev Cat tonight - i'm going to sleep tonight like a log! ;)
.........................
Oh yea I forgot about me sitting on the wrong platform! I obviously cant read at 11.00am on a Sunday morning! :hihi:
I love that photo of Albert skipping down his path in the distance with his white hat on!
Have a good time in Canada, canada_girl! See ya soon :)

Only because I needed to the loo quite desperately by that point!:?
Albert T Smith 25-06-2007, 15:35 It is very nice to know that you all enjoyed the walk. I'm just glad it wasn't done 24hrs later!!. I actually went back to take the photo of Higgor Tor and Karl Walk after I left you at Dore Moor. Actually I went back up for my Tea at the Fox House.
My first photos. I hope it works because its the first time I've done this. It Does!!

Albert, I would have bought you a pint if i'd known how thirsty you were :hihi:
Enjoy your holiday Canada and Hubby!
