I have just had an email from uni (of sheffield) saying that there has been a mumps outbreak amongst students with 70 cases since october. They are advising students (and anyone in close contact with the student community) to get vaccinated if you have not already been so. If you have had the MMR vaccination (introduced from 1987 onwards) then you do not need to be vaccinated.

They are holding free vaccinations on wednesday and thursday in the Octogan centre for all students and advice will be given to non-students about who to contact if you are worried.

yeh I know, just thought people should be aware in case they have contact with students and haven't been vaccinated, so it doesn't get worse :)

Is mumps the one where you are confined to soup for breakfast dinner and tea, cos it does some swellin behind the ears or summat. . .

If so, I've had it. . so me is sorted. . . ??

FYI
Not just swelling behind the ears either. You have glands in other parts of the body that can be effected. So you guys watch out!!!
You can become sterile :o

yes it causes an inflmation of glands, including the testicles and ovaries, it can make you infertile. Anyone under 16 years old will have had the MMR vaccination, and some adults will have had the mumps vaccination. If you have had the MMR - you CANNOT have the mumps injection too, but if you have just had the mumps vaccination, it won't do any harm to have it again, so better safe than sorry.
