I have recently had to undertake the new security door course which is required to be taken by ALL doormen if they wish to continue to work in the industry after dec 13.
I have had to complete this course which is for 32 hours and have to pay the licesing people the sum of £190 for the badge,do people think this is money well spent and will it make the customer feel safer in the knoledge they are in the hands of qualified people.

I think for some people it may make a difference, but TBH if your'e gonna get absolutely hammered and make a d**k of yourself then u deserve everything u get.

I think doormen on the whole do a good job (something I thought about but didnt really fancy the late nights!), a job that alot of people wouldnt fancy.

Having said this if its stops some of the cowboys working then its got to be a good thing. Its these thugs that give the majority of doorman a bad name.

by doorman I'm assuming you mean the likes of bouncers at pubs/clubs and such, maybe arena security things like that?

Personally I wouldnt care if they was licensed or not, aslong as I know they're doing their job of keeping nutters away, stopping loads of 13yr old kids in and making sure they split up fights before we end up with the hospitals full of guys that are too stupid to realise fighting is wrong...

most of the bouncers I see are hard as nails, I've seen some take some serious punches and not even flinch... thats qualified in my book :D lol

Dear Royjames,
I have heard bad things from other people in the old days about doorstaff. However I have been going into Clubs and Bars and drinking for nearly 20 years, often heavily, and have never had a problem with doorstaff ever, maybe 'cause I am not a troublecauser. The fact that doormen have to undertake training and get a recognised badge can only be good. Yes this is money well spent. And helps reinforce the general view that you are professionals.

I suspect that much of the trouble you deal with comes from people who are drugs takers, and I know there is a lot of that going on in some places. And there are the people who get aggressive when they drink. Does the training do anything to help you (or maybe a less experienced doorman) deal with people like this?

In answer to your question, yes we are trained to deal with ALL aspects of the job including people who are on drugs as well as any other problems.
I like to think the training will indeed help me to do my job better than before and this is the way forward.
One aspect is the strict police checks which have been brought in far tougher than before and this will indeed root out those with serious convictions and stop them getting the badge.
The only problem I can see is the new laws were brought into Yorkshire somewhat late in the day so we might end up with some establishments having to close as the doorstaff are still awaiting their badges from the S.I.A.

Royjames,
thankyou for that insightful answer to my question.

Are there (or was there ever) steroid using bodybuilders working as Doormen in the city. There was a documentory about this kind of thing on the tv and I have heard about aggressive behaviour in the past which I have assumed to be connected. Chiefly people being thrown down stairs at Limit/Rebels/Roxy. I have never seen this behaviour myself. And would be happy if someone who really knew about it was to give me a more accurate picture.

My son has passed the new security door course, not sure what diffrence it will make as the idiots that cause the trouble will still be out there.

I know at least the doormen will have had the relevant checks, that has to be better for all concerned.

Hi Muddycoffee,I am not able to answer your question about door staff on steroids or whether they worked at the establishments you mention.
I have no doubt however that thier probably were some doormen who were not acting correctly and this is one reason the new door badge was brought in to weed out those with the wrong attitude.
I like to thimk that the industry will indeed get a better image in time and people will look upon us as profesionals, time will tell on this.
One final point is that the wage for the job will indeed increase as those bad doormen are refused their badge so us who are able to work will get more money, theirs always a silver lining isn't their?

Royjames

Are the licensing laws going to be enforced or will it be a case of turning a blind eye ?

If the laws are not going to be enforce by the regulatory bodies then that would be rather unfair on the responsable doormen/women such as yourself

I'm looking forward to the new regulations. The police checks are something that should have been brought in many years ago. It is going to make it very much easier to complain and hold to account some of the idiots that work as doorstaff.
