View Full Version : Bankers Draft turning into a lloyds?
I noticed as I walked past the other day that its closed until mid-december, now the odd thing is that it has "lloyds no. 1" posters up saying to visit there as the Wetherspoons is shut...
I wonder.. is it going to re-open as a massive lloyds no. 1?
robbie 03-12-2004, 09:25 PM Lloyds is owned by Weatherspoons who own BD
Lickszz 03-12-2004, 10:15 PM A couple of months ago I was in Bankers draft and there was a horrible smell of vomit near the bar. Exactly 1 month later I returned and the same smell of vomit was still present. Disgusting!
Whoever takes it ownership needs to smarten it up.
A couple of months ago I was in there with two friends & we noticed the same stench - we left without buying a drink :gag:
Cyclone 04-12-2004, 10:24 AM the rumour is indeed that it will reopen as a lloyds. Which is a shame, i like the bankers and i don't like the lloyds at the top of fargate.
Tim42 04-12-2004, 10:53 AM They are turning BD into LLoydes to try & attract a more up market clientel. So what do LLoydes do to change clientel? Introduce big screens & music in a big bar selling cheap beer, & less real ale, in a rough part of town. Wow! Chav palace or what?
I dont care. Not botherd about going out for a pint & a fight.
Ill stick with Cask & Cutler, Fat Cat, CRB etc. Pity though, exterior of building is very grand to look at.
Ousetunes 04-12-2004, 11:41 AM Bankers Draft? It feels like a cross between a railway station waiting room and an old folks' home. It's depressing, it's smelly - as numerous other contributors have said - and the food I was once daft enough to order I wouldn't have fed to a dog. (It was, to the best of my knowledge supposed to be chilli. It looked more like Whiskas cat food.)
Some of its cliental are so old and weathered that when they refit it I presume they'll be half-decomposed into the furniture.
Whoever owns this place should frankly, be ashamed. There should be public health warnings on the doors. Better still, it should be closed with a heavy dose of Domestos.
IMHO!
Robbie_Lovin 04-12-2004, 01:03 PM What exactly would change anyways?
The name? and also it will be able to play music/entertainment!!
I always thought that the origional Lloyds would be unique in the reason it was caled that is because where the old Lloyds bank was?? or am i incorrect in thinking that
Carborundum 04-12-2004, 06:40 PM I heard its going up market too and will be called "The Vomit Lounge" eith modern big plasma screens installed showing revolving views of seascapes all the time and extremely cheap beer 3 for 1 offers and a spanking new slippery floor - the bouncers will be called cabin crew - so watch out !

No, Lloyds No1 is a national chain of bars, owned by Wetherspoons. The main difference to the normal Wetherspoons is they have music and TVs, and a reduced beer range.
dreamreal 04-12-2004, 09:11 PM Heard about Bankers Draft turning into Lloyds the other day. Even though it gets refurbished and name changes, it will still be the same clientele!
Just like another establishment i will not name....

Andy C 05-12-2004, 03:24 PM According to the Lloyds No1 website the Bankers Draft will re-open as a Lloyds on 16th December.

Exactly, it's the customers that make it the place it is, and why i avoid it.
duffman 06-12-2004, 12:36 PM Bring back the Lazer zone whilst keeping the bar inside, I used to go to the bankers and sit upstairs where the warm air took the smell of the vomit to new levels in my nose:gag:
Cyclone 06-12-2004, 02:00 PM lazer quest with a bar, could it be any better?

Well all the old scroats will probably have gone to the Brown Bear for their cheap alcohol now the Bankers has shut, and will probably stay there rather than go to Lloyds no 1 when it opens.
woodchip 06-12-2004, 08:32 PM Ive been in the bankers a few times, its not at the top of my list of pubs but it isnt the worst.
A public house is there to be used by the public, and if its full of weatherd old men then so be it.
If it was up to people like you lot complaining, you'd have to have a **** mullet and wear a blazer and jeans like half of the nobs up west st, to get in a boozer.
Mooseyb 06-12-2004, 09:47 PM Sad fact of the day
The smell of vomit is actually to do with the beer. It has been cooled too quickly or something like that (according to my mate the beer deliverer!! :) )
Lickszz 06-12-2004, 11:50 PM Taking into account some of the types of people that frequent Bankers Draft I'm not sure I subscribe to that theory in this instance.
Granted the smell was near the bar but the source seemed to be the carpet not the beer.
PerlOfWisdom 07-12-2004, 12:56 AM The vomit smell is beer that has dripped down the inside of the bar, where, because of the design of the bar, it can't be cleaned out.
Lickszz 07-12-2004, 01:15 AM I'm not saying that this isn't the case however, I've never experienced this lingering smell in any other public house.
As I said I returned to the place briefly approximately 4-6 weeks later and the same awful smell was still present.
Carborundum 07-12-2004, 01:41 AM Funny that - I also suspect that the smell of the vomit in the Sportsman - which is still one of my favourite pubs - iN Cambridge Street - is also due to the beer which has been in the punters stomachs 20 minutes earlier ...

I'm trying to work out what rude word goes before mullet.

I don't think it's 'sexy'.

carpets in pubs/bars/clubs never good - think BED, think LEADMILL, think GROSS
SCOOBY 10-01-2005, 11:48 PM So the Bankers has re-opened and dispite you ever doubting lot, it has changed. It is now a WetherLloyds as the bar staff informed me. It still doesnt have music in the day - it starts at 5pm and still does a big range of cask ale - bonus at £1.59!
It looks a lot nicer with big leather couches and new carpets etc. The people have changed to. Not the usual scroates. This is a good place to go for value for money drink and food in a nice clean enviroment.
The fact the pub was run into the ground before was not the fault of the bar staff or the new managers. They seemed fed up with it all before and have all made noise to get it changed. Keep it up - it seems to be working.
SpiderPete 11-01-2005, 12:31 AM I agree as well, its a big change, we went in on Friday and the must has made a difference, and noticed the carpets straight away....
.... and still cheap drinks, wot more can u ask for.
