View Full Version : Concord Park Swings
When I was young we had some wonderfull entertainment in the Concord Park playground the swings and rounderbouts were just about the best in Sheffield..Can anyone remember "The Octopus" "The Maypole" or "The Flying Plank" or the thing that looked like an upturned shuttlecock with foot boards round the bottom..Sadley most of these disappeared over the years mainly due to kids getting hurt on them by doing daft things..like spinng the roundabout as fast as it would go and then daring each other to leap on it. only to be thrown off again by the "G" force.
I can vaguely remember these. Were they situated near the park entrance and the bowling greens?
Our 'wreck' for the kids of Standon, was (and still is) near the new bmx track, behind Standon Road, on Wooley Wood Road. Initially there was a small shed with an attendant, who we called Ernie. Eventually the shed was removed and Ernie was seen no more.
We had swings, a roundabout, one of those long rocking horse things, and a slide which was probably about ten foot high, but felt higher. Also the surface was rough tarmac, with chippings all over, not rubbewr matting like the kids get today!
i remember the park at concorde my gran lived at Shiregreen and my grandad tok me there to play. do you remember the wood at the bottom of the park Wooley Wood with all the blue bells.
I spent a great deal of my childhood in Woolley Woods- we would bike through it, climb trees, look for birds' eggs, make "Tarzan" swings and play army-style games. We were not averse to lighting the odd fire either. The wood at night was very eery indeed [as are all woods...], and I once cut through the wood at night, coming down from Concord Park to exit at the bridge over the little stream that brought me on to Standon Road. I was about 16, and the dark trees really spooked me. Suddenly, I saw a large shape stir in the moonlight, and heard the rustle of leaves. I yelled in terror, and the shape screamed back at me, running off into the depths of the wood. I had disturbed a tramp's sleep!
Yes Timo, i have good memories of woolley woods- making tarzan swings. our favourite was one up side of houses not too far in at swings end.I think it swung you over the top of someones cucumber frames so if you fell there you'd had it.
I remember one of our gang (Elaine Webster)falling off and breaking her arm her boyfriend at that time (Ian green)
brother of( barney) Brian green, carried her all the way back up to top of old houses on newman road with her screaming all the way- perhaps not such a good memory lol.
It must have been early 60s as i remember all the teenage girls then had plastic sandals and cut the backs off to make sling backs.
and all wore those mod trousers-like stirrup things.
Tara,
I'll bet the cucumber frames were the ones owned by a man called Reynolds. He regarded my mates and I as "varmints", and occasionally tried to pelt us with clods of earth. Of course, we never smashed his greenhouse windows or threw bangers into his garden whilst he was digging, as he alleged. It must have been some, other, rougher boys. We were always revising our French past participles, or collecting for Blue Peter appeals...ho ho ho.
x_LoUiSe_x 22-02-2005, 15:22 the house im living in @ the mo backs onto wooley woods and all the local kids still play in there, most of them usuing my garden to get in them! grrrrrr! lol
i live on sycamore house road, did ne of you use the gardens to get in2 the woods?
I don't recall your road, but I used to live at 66 Standon Crescent, where there was a passasgeway that serviced the back gardens of the houses over the road. We used that passage to get onto the golf course and from there we walked to the woods.
:)
sycamore is at shiregreen.
a bit too far out for the old wincobankers to go.
But we didnt get in through gardens, just that our tarzan swing went over them.
But back on to subject, when i was older we moved to shiregreen and were always in concord park.
the swings use to be lower down then -70s. more near the main road.
x louise do you know the mckeen family who live on sycamore.
Sam Miguel 24-02-2005, 17:31 Tara, I was brought up on the Shiregreen during the sixties. Concorde Park and Woolley Woods were places I used to frequent. I lived on Sicey Avenue near The Shiregreen Hotel and went to Hatfield House Lane (Firth Park) school.
Tara, you've prompted my memory. The swings were against the main road, opposite where our dentist used to have his local surgery. Was it called Wincobank Lane?
I spent many times walking trough Concord Park full of fear, on my way to the dentist.
Sam Miguel 24-02-2005, 18:22 The playground was next to the main road which is Shiregreen lane, just up from what used to be the English Steel Social Club which was on the other side of the road.
mark1971 25-02-2005, 13:48 1977/1981 i use to live on the flower estate (daffodil rd) & frequently played up at concord park aswell as the park that was situated near the woods at the bottom of daffodil road anybody remember that?
fuctifino 27-02-2005, 00:38 I lived on daffodil road too, remember the park that was put on wincobank hill, just down from bluebell road at the top of the middle field.
it too had one of those cone shaped steel round abouts with the seats on, it was great. it used to smash your teeth in when you fell off backwards.
there was also some monkey bars that were ok but i remember hurting myself on the round about more. it was great.

Now you can't beat a bit of good old-fashioned discomfort.
Stevo,
I don't want to digress from the thread too much, but do you refer to Pawson the Dentist here? He was situated near to Concord Park Gates. I too remember fearful trips to his surgery for excruciating fillings.

Untill 1978 when he retired the dentist on Shiregreen lane was called "William Brawn" he used to keep chickens in the back garden and when I was a lad he used to save the chicken feathers for me, so I could make arrows for my home made bow ..(when bow and arrows were great playthings).;

I spent many times walking trough Concord Park full of fear, on my way to the dentist. The Dentist was Called "Billy Brawn"..He was a very small man..and he used to keep chickens at the back of his Surgery/House...and his address is "Shiregreen lane"..I visited the area last week and found that the "swings/playground" had been moved to the top of the bank away from "Shiregreen lane".. the main site of the original swings is now a "Car park" for the Health Club/Gym.
hi spent 70s,80s in wooley woods like timo spent my youth egging riding bike just hanging out in the woods can still remember the tarzans best ones were one on massive tree on middle path halfway between winco and shiregreen, one behind sycamore house road (built by the stans)great times
I remember going to thoes swings as a kid as my Nan lived at Shiregreen. Is there a cemetray near ther too, as my Great Gran is buried there.
alirosdan 19-08-2006, 20:47 I spent my childhood in Woolley Woods. We lived on Standon Drive which backs onto the park. The best tarzan swing was between there and the bmx track - you actually swung over the stream and it seemed really high. We also built dens, had picnics in the golf bunkers and climbed trees. I was followed through the woods whilst walking my dogs a few years ago, and now I am really resentful that I feel wary about walking in my old 'playground' on my own.

My Nan used to live on Ronksley Road, My grandad use to take me to the swings in Concord Park he would have a pint at the Sicey on a Sunday. Happy days.

Was it the same Brian Green who later kept the White Bear in Ecclesfield? He had a brother called Ian. I knew them both.
The thing i remember more about thoes woods was the bluebells, nice carpet of blue when you drove past.

barneyboco 25-08-2006, 21:58 Hi Nigel
Not the same brothers I'm afraid
Barneyboco
When I used to go Hatfield House Lane school (1964to1968) we used to have our cross country run in Concorde park. We had to run down to the golf links and then into Wooley woods, the path out was a very steep one. I hated running always seemed to come last.
Why does it show a smiley face for the 8?
My in-laws lived at Firth Park, and one day we told our children we were going to visit Grandma, but we were going to stop on the way to have a walk in the woods at Wooley Wood Bottom. We parked the car and walked across the Rd into the woods. Our son was around 5 at the time, and we saw that he was creeping through the trees, looking scarily around as he went.We asked what he was doing and he said he was looking out for the Big Bad Wolf! He really thought these were the woods in the story of Little Red Riding Hood! He must have been thinking about it all the way there. No wonder he was so quiet!
