View Full Version : Why are there no good rock nights any more?
why oh why are there no good rock nights in sheffield anymore?
corporation used to be ace, until it moved and turned into a nursery school,
does anyone know of ANYWHERE that nearly measures up to the old corp(when it was on bank street)
please help!
Carbon
I find the Casbhar to be a good night...Less young uns running about, good variety of music and a mixed friendly crowd :headbang:
Cant agree more about Corporation..i felt ancient in there and im only 29!....*sniff*
muddycoffee 02-12-2004, 15:41 I have to disagree about the Casbah. When It was the wap in the old days it was tremendous. When it reopened as the Casbah at first it was ok. But now they don't play rock music any more.
Was in last saturday (sorry sat before last) and went down stairs and it was all depeche mode.
Looks like rock sounds like 80s pop night retrospective.
Upstairs bar was ok for a while they played stuff like smiths and harder indie stuff. Not heavy rock though.
Go to Nelson for a proper rock night. Classic rock downstairs and Nu rock upstairs.
what type of rock you looking for?
I'd love to find somewhere else to go. Corps not too bad on a saturday but i feel old in there too. Old Corp was great but the musics moved on and everythings changed.
I think Bedroom do a rock night on Mondays. Threads on it here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18182) and here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17674).
Also, let's not forget the Classic Rock Bar on Eccy Rd, across from Waitrose. Thread on directions/location is here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22772)...and Decembers line-up is here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22010).
Open everyday, live bands most nights of the week, cheap drinks.
Have a word with the forums very own Classic Rock, she's the landlady of the CRB.. She'll be able to fill you in better than me.
Hope that helps

MuteWitness 06-12-2004, 11:05 casbah on a friday night play rock music
There are no good rock nights as the clubs would rather fill them with loads of young kids with mummy and daddies pocket money and play crap music. I admit I went to corp at bank street when I was young but didn't always get let in (when I did they were the best nights out I had), now they let anyone there so they can get the money in rather can keep the regular punters happy as well.
The Simpsons last night was the one about Homer suddenly finding out he didnt understand modern music and what the "kids" were into...
muddycoffee 06-12-2004, 18:43 Well said Jake,
I think some people want rock music to stay as it was when they were 18. It's a selfish and futile argument. Us older rockers have just got to let go of the baton and let the younger ones take over in the most popular venues.
When I was 19-24 I was in Rebels 1ce or 2ce a week. If I was that age now I'd probably be in the Corporation 1ce or 2ce a week, listening to the up to date stuff. But you can't expect that the Corporation club would survive on a smattering of early middle aged rockers who only have the energy to go down once a year.
Here! I remember dancing to loads of '70s and '80s stuff in Rebels in the early '90s. It played a good mix. That's all we're asking for now! Of course 'the drop' was the ultimate luxury, being able to choose between 3 different sounds!..........Boy do I feel old
Purely for research purposes what would make a good 'Rock Night' for you ?
Either post here or PM me
Glam 'n sleaze! (not '70s glam tho), NWOBHM (die hard 'Leppard fan), the better end of 'thrash', AOR.
Will that be enough to be going on with?
muddycoffee 07-12-2004, 08:44 Strix, you are right. But that's how the Corp is, I think they have 4 seperate rooms, with different styles of rock in each one. At least it was the last time I went in abut 9 months ago. I occasionally try to get some mates down but they all want to get home for their kids etc.. First time I went, I wandered from room to room marvelling at how much better it was than Rebels in the old days because of the variety. Ok the big room had NU rock and Thrash as far as I could tell, but there was a classic rock room and a goth room and 1 or 2 others as far as I remember.
Now my personal favourite is stuff like AC/DC, aerosmith, thunder, Lizzy, UFO, Older Def Lepp, Led Zep (Stuff that Bon Scott called It's just rock 'n' roll, I'd call heavy rock. But I also Like Metal, Like Ozzy, Maiden, Metallica etc.. And Funky Hard Rock/Metal Like FNM, older RHCP (before they got soppy and turned into housewife's choice).. I don't keep up with much new stuff because I don't spend much time in the rock scene anymore.

I think that's unfair - I'm 24 & I hate the 'rock' music they play in corp. They play the red hot chilli peppers on a metal night for god's sake. And I am sick to death of whiney teenage americans complaining about how unfair life is. Bring back real rock music - death and bikes!! The way it should be...
Incidentally I will happily dj thrash and classic rock anywhere, any time... just give me a CD player and a sound system!!

Erm... Corp actually play this stuff in the downstairs room on a saturday night. In case you wanted to go. And most of the people down there are in their 30s.
