there is a letter in todays star newspaper were a mr g johnson from thorpe hesley says
"now that the castle market is to be redeveloped wouldn't it be wonderful if council planners could have the castle rebuilt exactly as it was on the original site it could have shops and resturants inside and even a drawbridge it could have city walls with views over the don and sheaf rivers what an attraction it would be"

I think this person has a good idea
but i bet we end up with another eyesore on this site

Dunno what's gonna happen with the Castle markets.

What I do know, is that there has been some serious fraud, regarding market maintenance funds (http://www.thestar.co.uk/ViewArticle.aspx?sectionid=58&articleid=2955631).

c) yet another ****ty living development

It'll be offices and open spaces where some ruins are salvageable. It'll open up the area going across to Victoria quays.

Indeed it will. I think it'll be good (once they knock down some of the other **** down there, and refurbish the nice old buildings). And yes there probably will be some flats, but what's the problem with that?

Did the castle have shops and restaurants inside? Will you be able to see the rerouted and culverted Don and Sheaf?

It's more than bonkers. Some people need to enter the 21st Century rather than imagining the world as a historic theme park.

Castle Market is great - if I didn't have to work for a living I would regularly call in for great value meats, fish, seafood, cooked meats, vegetables, breads, eggs and pies.

Unfortunately most people do have to work and I guess there is only so much trade OAPs and students can maintain. :(

I would love to see what's left of the castle.. other cities make the most of their heritage, why not us? Lumps of stone are better than nothing, I would pay to see them!

Speaking of the market, can anyone shed any light on the character who wanders around the market in a football referee's kit ?

Anyone any news on the Castle Market at the moment?

Is it still open, if so when is it due to close?

What's the connection with The Moor?

Many thanks.

What's the old building they've recently pulled down just on Pond Street, by the bus station?

Do you mean the one that was next to the old post office building?

It won't close till the new building on the Moor is opened. At the moment Home Bargains are holding things up  So it'll be a few years yet.

An extension to the old post office building. The whole thing is gonna become 'five star' (whatever that means) offices for small businesses, along with a hotel and hopefully some retail/restaurants.

Good point, you can never have enough food. Looking out of the window now I can see acres of arable land going unused.
I suspect when I look from a similar position in say 30 years or so, it will likely be housing etc.

That explains the uncleaned drains and the stink then, and the unexplained odour from the outgoing council, and here's me thinking a bit of fish had gone off.

Wouldn't it be good if the markets opened that bit later for those who work in town to be able to buy some fresh produce home to cook that day??
Some markets close around 6pm in other cities.

Or if the companies did like a local box scheme and deliver would also be a good strategy too.
