View Full Version : Where is the best place for Curry and chips
donniedarko 02-12-2004, 12:03 hi
ive just moved to sheffield and would like to know where the best curry place and the best fish and chips shop are
thanks
IMO,
best curry - 7 Spices Balti at West Bar - eat in or take out. Not full of p**s heads after 10 pints of lager and consistently good.
best fish and chips - Bole Hill Fish and Chips on Crookes - worth driving to from Nether Edge for me.
now I'm hungry!!!
Yes they have a very distinctive taste at bolehill chippys, I think they fry in beef dripping yum now I am hungry too:D
I'm sure there must be an answer in here somewhere for best Fish and Chips: http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=171
HTH
Hellgoddess 02-12-2004, 18:30 Best fish and chips come from "Tonys" in Mosborough Village I reckon, bloomin' lovely! : )

Before any vegetarians have heart attacks, I am sure they fry with vegetable oil.
The distinctive taste probably comes from the fact that they know what they are doing and use fresh ingredients!!
muddycoffee 02-12-2004, 20:23 Best fish and chips are Woodseats Fishery.
Best Curry.
Ashuka on London road.
Mangla on spital hill is good if you like large portions, but in a dodgy area.
Ghosthunter 02-12-2004, 20:59 I would agree too about 7 Spices Balti
been there lots of times and always good food and service
the chicken pathia is nice........a hot curry with a slight sweet and sour twist.
Getting slightly technical but this has bugged me for years........
It's got to be chips first.
I've always referred to them as chips & fish and not fish & chips.
As in chips & cake, chips & gravy etc.
Is it just me? Does it matter? To me it does.
Glad thats off my chest
I'd agree that 7 Spices is mighty fine, I'd also recommend Ayesha on Eccelesall Road, consistently good stuff.
Chip shop - There's a chinese chip shop off on a road off Eccelesall Road North but I\can;t remember what it's called or what the road's called. Not a great deal of use really!
Sadly, both the best curry and the best fish and chips I ever had were not in Sheffield, but in Whitby (The railway station and the Magpie).
Having said that, I used to like the fish n' chips from Manor Top and the place on Pond Street.
Sorry for the derail...

seen this before somewhere, its like watching bbc 1 full of repeats (lol) donniedarko, view the other threads regarding worst chippy :)
Ned Ludd 03-12-2004, 09:14 Top curry at the Everest on Chesterfield Road
its the chippy near the grindstone that still fries in beef fat
bolehil chippy is just oil
Stans chippy near intake is the best chippy ever
Best chips tasted ever is the "Admiral" on the Birley Moor Road going towards Hackenthorpe - go and try it
Tony's in Mosborough every time. The Admiral's not so bad either...........
craigmason 03-12-2004, 12:34 forget the rest and go to the chippie at the bottom of the moor(moor fisheries)
Robbie Loving 03-12-2004, 12:36 this thread made me crave chips and curry

hmmmmmmmm curry

Depends on what kind of curry sauce you are looking for. If its the typical chip shop type then I cant help, but if like me you prefer the Chinese takeaway curry sauce, then the best one for me was the chippy on the corner of Blair Athol Road and Greystones Road just off Eccy road, opposite Summerfields. Not far from Netheredge.
Does anyone know if the Balti King is any good? They put a flyer through the door which really made me feel like a curry but I've heard someone had rather nasty after effects after a curry there - anyone had a good curry from there?
If not does anyone know where to get a good curry around the West Street/Division street area?
Having said that, I used to like the fish n' chips from Manor Top and the place on Pond Street.
i have to agree with the manor top chippy its the best, also the one on the park hill flats but i havent been there ages and ive heard there pants now ive been living in australia nearly a year and i really miss proper fish and chips
oops the quote thing didnt work proplerly then, how does it work ?
BertieBasset 12-12-2004, 21:10 Balti King and their sister business Millenium chip shop allegedly ended up in court about 3 years ago with the threat of closure due to hygiene issues and vermin droppings ending up in the food....maybe that's why they're still trying to drum up trade using flyers...
Best fish and chips come from "Tonys" in Mosborough Village I reckon, bloomin' lovely! : )
not so now though, since tony retired, relations running, not good!!!
the_rudeboy 08-04-2006, 23:52 Seven Spices Balti or Nirmals for good indian food.
babyboom 09-04-2006, 08:32 Best chippy, Trafalgar at Trafalgar Road, Wadsley Bridge.
Dear_Ladies 09-04-2006, 13:53 Does anyone know if the Balti King is any good?
Absolute crap.
best curry = down ecclesfield other end of the shops where the coop is across from ball :hihi:
bigflesh 09-04-2006, 20:46 when i saw the thread title i thought "curry and chips as in 1 meal" not curry down "the road" and chips "in handsworth". maybe i have strange tastes?
hagardriley 09-04-2006, 21:32 You can't beat Nirmals on Convent Walk, just off Glossop Road, for a sit down curry. Hong Kong Wok is great for a take out. It is situated on Abbeydale Road on the left going out of town about 100 metres before the bottom of Woodseats Road. The curry has a really different taste to the usual bland stuff served up in most Chinese takeaways and the prices are extremely reasonable.
Best chippy is one that I have recently discovered, which is opposite the Co-op on the shopping centre in Ecclesfield. Also, the recently opened one on Abbey Lane at Woodseats, next to the Lateshopper opposite The Abbey boozer, is excellent.
youwhatref 10-04-2006, 05:24 I like the three Adrimrals out in Mosborough/Beighton/Frecheville shops. Big thick chips, massive fish although not the cheapest. (Plus you'll see the new trade for Asylum Seekers :D)
Not done many curry restaurants but for quality and variety i would recommend Eskitimum buffet at Attercliffe.
SALLYLIS 10-04-2006, 08:00 Best curry by far in Sheffield is Butlers Balti - its fab.
Also have to agree that Broomheads chippy next to the Grindstone is also excellent

listen, its fish and chips. end of.
the other examples sound best with chips at the start but you cannot do that here. fish and chips is the way Pele says it. And Jesus. And David 'the duke' dickenson.
chips and fish is what them mincers from 'trading up' probably say:o
now then, Harry's on washington/wostenholme road...bit hit and miss, but when they get it right...fncking great fish and chips.
Kashmir Curry Centre by carlisle street also great.
take away kebabs though, you NEED to go the Nether Edge Kebabs next to POPS, just get a chicken tikka 'bab, get home, sort yourself out some nice mood music, maybe a couple of candles, and enjoy.
Ooh, handbags at dawn, Bradders, you pedantic ****.
Last time I was in Harry's on Wostenholm I got enough chips to feed a family of gypsies. I'd said it was fine if the haddock took 7 minutes, but the guy must have felt bad, and sought to compensate me with several kilos of fried spuds. Lovely fish though, and consistently good chips.
2 Steps have had a variably history in terms of chip quality IMO, but they can rank among the best. Well, very nearly.
As a "one-shop-stop" for the chips/curry solution, The Broomhill Friery used to do a 'Chinese chicken curry and chips' for £1.50. I'm not sure if they still do it, as I haven't been up that way for a while. Probably worth checking out, though.
As an aside, Ronin, I liked your renaming of a national favourite. Spar does 'Potato and Meat pies' (generic meat, of course), named so because they don't contain enough of what can be legally classed as meat. Lovely.
Curries...er, Butler's? Bilash? With regard to Nether Edge Kebab house, I was hoping that they might do me a kebab meat rogan josh for my birthday. Here's hoping...
Bully_Beef 10-04-2006, 13:37 On my way back from the Vine last night I was gripped by the ludicrous notion that some chips and a seedy pie from Harry's would be a good investment.
I was wrong. The chips from Harry's minged large style :gag:
Back in the day, I used to enjoy chips & curry from Popeye's on West Street, but it was a bit shady last time I had it from there.
The chips from Harry's minged large style :gag:
I am saddened to hear of your chip-shop disappointment. I've always been pleased with Harry's chips. Maybe they saw you coming and gave you the scraps.

I imagine the fact that someone had drawn a huge cock and balls on my face when I fell asleep in the pub can't have helped them maintain their otherwise high level of esteem for me as a customer...

Yep, you can't beat fish and chips from the coast. Went to Whitby last week and had them. The magpie is good but pricey to eat in. Have you been to the magpie takeaway?
johnbradley 10-04-2006, 16:00 ^ coast-based fish and chips are obviously closer to the source...but what good is that information for sheffield?
as for harrys, yes i have had crappy chips as well as good uns, and the fish last week was a little dry, but overall those chaps work hard, and pile on the servings too.
sometimes i even get the tomato sauce sachets for free, cos im a regular:) but they still call me 'james', i havent the heart to correct them!
and stef, welcome back from your travels. i seem to have posted quite a lot in your absence, pedanty a specialty:nod:
