All the videos are from the Yellow Submarine film, a project with very little input from the Beatles themselves. They had a five film agreement with United Artists and the cartoon was one of the easiest ways of fulfilling that agreement (A Hard Day's Night, Help!, Beatles At Shea Stadium [never officially released], Magical Mystery Tour being the other four).

However, upon seeing parts of the film before its official release the Beatles were disappointed to have not been asked to contribute to the film, soundtrack aside, and so agreed to make a cameo appearance toward the end of the film. As you might know, they didn't even do their own characters' voices.

The soundtrack is a little strange in that it utilises quite some old stuff. The Beatles had only just released their eponymous album, better known as The Double White, so had moved on from the likes of Nowhere Man (1965, Rubber Soul) and Eleanor Rigby (1966, Revolver). One new song written for the film was Paul's throwaway track All Together Now (in which he can be heard to sing 'pink, brown, yellow, OLANGE and blue, I love you') and George actually contributed two: Only A Northern Song (a mess) and It's All Too Much (the version on the newly remixed Yellow Submarine OST, released in September 1999 is magnificent).

For me, the stand-out track and best aspect of Yellow Submarine is Hey Bulldog, one of the last joint Lennon-McCartney offerings. Sadly, even some copies of the film omitted the song with its video (a video shot for Lady Madonna).

I care little for Yellow Submarine as a film (and indeed soundtrack; George Martin's instrumental soundtrack - originally the b-side to the album released in 1969 - was omitted from the repackaged version of some 30 years hence). I do like the wacky Magical Mystery Tour which has some of the best promo videos of the Fabs, namely I Am The Walrus and Paul's Fool On The Hill.

It was also a rare thing: A Beatles album which failed to reach the top of the charts, reaching number 3 and thus being unable to dislodge the album at the top of the charts, the Beatles' Double White, of course!!
