There seems to be a lot of Stone Circles around Sheffield Arbour low, Nine Ladies, Froggat and the Bull Ring just to name a few. What are your views on these ancient standing stones. Are they old Calenders, Witch or Pagan worshipping places or what? 8)

Perhaps they were just a fashionable 'idea' once. Historically Sheffield generally goes over the top with every new architectural fad. Nice to know it's consistent :hihi:

I have a friend who just loves these things, she has on occasion dragged me out to various sites and then in freezing temperatures stood touching the stones to get 'a vibe' not content with that she then has to stand by each stone and look to see 'what it can see'
I think I upset her slightly when we visited the ones below Robin Hood's Stride as i said they were obviously put up by the farmers so his carttle had something to scratch themselves against as the big trees weren't in their field.

There has to be some reason for them because the whole country is covered in them personally I think Avebury is the best the Whole village is practically surrounded.

Just found a great panoramic view of Avebury just for the people who have never been there.

Avebury is a really great place if you're into standing stones and at least you can walk up and touch them unlike Stonehenge. I'm sure they had some significance to the people who erected them but nowadays mystic types are forever attributing mystiical energy patterns to them and crop circles and chalk pictures on the hillsides and barrows and springs the list goes on and on. Stone circles or standing stones may be interesting but I doubt if we'll ever know of their true significance.

I can recommend an excelent book which postulates a possible real original usage of a stone circle, and how to set one up.
Once you have set your circle up you can

1)tell the time accurate to around 10 mins
2)The date
3)The latitude of the site on the globe
4)Make a pendulum which ticks seconds
5)Make a measuring stick of an exact sacred yard

The book is called Uriel's Machine

Apparently there used to be a concrete circle in the centre of Sheffield, dedcated to the god of retail therapy. many people used to worship beneath it and watch the fish!

ahve a look at the above link for details of stone cricles and other such megaliths.

My personal opinion is that they are the remants of the race of giants that orginally populated the British Isles. The babies had to have building bricks now didn't they? :D
