Anyone know if the station stays open overnight?

I need to get one of the overnight trains to Manchester Airport at around 2am, but I'm sure I've been at the station for a taxi before at that time and it has been closed.

Do they open the doors just for that train or something and then close them again?

Cheers. :)

I believe that the doors only open when a train is due - but dont quote me!

I used to work in the train station and it did used to get locked up at the entrance from the tram stops at about 1 o'clock ish i think, but I believe the front entrance is open if there is a train due (otherwise how would people that get off the train get out??), the taxi rank used to close at 2am though.

I asked this question myself a little while ago.
Midnight.

the door at the front - side is open because i've left via it coming in on the 2 am manchester train before so you should be able to get in that way

I drive 'em, and you're correct mate.
The door is at the right hand side near M&S and taxi rank if you didn't know.

Cheers everyone.

I know where the door is near M&S. I could always go into the station around 1am just to make sure I'm in there. :D

Yes - I once caught one of those middle of the night trains. Despite some delay because of engineering works - which included going through Cowburn Tunnel on the opposite track - we still arrived at Manchester Airport early.

I went to pick up my gf at about 2am in the morning, and the doors were not open.

I tried both doors, but neither worked.

They still work from inside, but the sensor for outside is turned off.

Luckily a workman walked past the inside sensor, set it off, and allowed me to get in.

It's daft, why don't they just leave the doors open if there are overnight trains!?

Well, the train leaves at 01.50, so unless I've taken it empty every time, you've got to be able to get into the station:hihi:
I shall ask tonight.

I caught the 1.45am manchester train from sheffield station a couple of weeks back (it was around 1.45ish anyway). Well i went to the main building at the front and most of the doors were locked apart from 1 set of doors which are open on the far left (bus station end) at around 12.10am.

It's to try and deter drunks/junkies/tramps from using the place as a doss house, from what I can remember of when I worked for Midland Mainline.

They hang around there all day, so what difference does it make at night when everything is shut?

Everyone has to suffer because of the bloody tramps. :(

I asked last night and was told a door would be open. It would depend on who opens it!
In other words, just try them all.

PM me Jambo by the way

Having worked on sheffield station during the night you can see why they lock it !!

Before the Station refurbishment, they locked up the concourse and left open a side door; this might still apply. Ther is some kind of side entrance that was used at the South end of Platform 1 for these late Manchester trains.

As far as I know, they do allow access through the main concourse all night for people to/from the late night Manchester trains. I've sometimes used this service during the Summer returning late from clubs in Manchester.
