View Full Version : Staniforth Road Arfer Mo 13-06-2007, 21:39 Does anyone know if there was a Fearnehough St off Staniforth Rd jmdee 13-06-2007, 21:46 I have checked my street maps dated 1910 - 2005, no Fearnehough Street mentioned in any of them. Eleke95 13-06-2007, 21:51 Arthur PM AKADOK and he will give you the exact location of Fearnehough Street! I lived down there but can't recall if it actually ran off Staniforth Road or not but I know it was quite near to it. AKADOK is your man for the answer to this! Diddles 13-06-2007, 21:55 I lived on Fearnehough Street when I got married in 1972. It did indeed run off Staniforth Road. It was just up from Broad Oaks on the same side. Grahame 13-06-2007, 21:56 There is another link here. http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showpost.php?p=2297130&postcount=24 I can just remember a fair in the the old Smithfield Market Area on Blonk Street (between the Victoria Station Approach and the River Don) This must have been 1939 or 1940 at the latest. I don't remember a fair on that site again and it eventually became a stockyard for Osborne's or Balfour's. Again, as a small kid, I also went to a fair on Staniforth Road. It was on a piece of waste land next to LNER railway tracks, opposite the end of Broad Oaks and FEARNEOUGH STREET. The site eventually became the yard for British Road Services. It may still be a transport yard but I haven't been on that section of Staniforth Road in over 30 years. I believe the first circus to come to Sheffield after WW II was Bertram Mills. In 1947 or 1948. They wanted to pitch the big top in Hillsborough Park but the Gruppenfuehrer at the Town Hall, in one of their now famous bouts of "Fuzzy Logic", insisted they go instead to the Pheasant Inn Ground at Carbrook. The animals were loaded and unloaded in the LMS Wicker Good Yard (The gate opposite TW Ward's old offices) This event was the subject of another Forum thread last year. I've just worked it out. The properties on the original Cave Street and Farnehough Street have been replaced by industrial units. The green arrow on the map which shows where Farnehough St. once was is now called Broadoaks, Shoppercheck is on the corner. The road bends round to the right and people park alongside the "Wrecks" which is where the running track is. Hamiltons Hire is opposite, they hire out lorries, diggers, JCB's etc and if you remember a few months ago there was a massive fire at a tyre place (Dexel Tyres?) which is the building with the white roof, but the fire was in another building belonging to them on Westbury Street just a few yards lower down Staniforth Road. It would have been a good place to live because Attercliffe Road is only at the bottom of Stanniforth Road where all the shops like Banners were which is only just round the corner. pressy 14-06-2007, 09:11 Farnehough Street is still there ...according to Google Earth. I use that road regular. Meaks 14-06-2007, 09:22 Doesn't seem that there's much left of it. The Royal Mail don't recognise it and it has no postcode. Yes you can still drive along it pressy, in fact it is quite a busy road but I think it has been renamed "Broad Oaks" which is why jmdee cannot find it on the street maps. Perhaps someone can confirm the name change, shoppercheck is on the corner and it's adress is 180 Stanniforth Road, thanks. Meaks 14-06-2007, 10:42 I'll try and have a walk over there one lunchtime (when its not hammering down with rain). alchresearch 14-06-2007, 12:05 According to Google Maps that part of Attercliffe is called Norton! Meaks 14-06-2007, 12:14 The whole of Sheffield seems to come under Norton according to Google Maps. :) Eleke95 14-06-2007, 16:52 That is marvelous Meaks. I've just worked it out. (At the bottom of Broad Oaks) How far back are you going Footifreak? Was the council depot on the other side of Staniforth Road when you were living there? I only ask because the school buses are based there along with some of the other services the council provide. Cheers :) Diddles 14-06-2007, 18:42 Doesn't seem that there's much left of it. I'm not surprised - Google Maps thinks that it's in Norton !! whiteley 14-06-2007, 19:04 My grandma and grandad lived on Fearnehough Street, their back garden backed on to Broad Oaks, it was a great place to live. I used to live on Cottingham Street, just a bit further down Staniforth Road Eleke95 14-06-2007, 20:48 How far back are you going Footifreak? Cheers :) Hi - I lived there as a child 1969 - 1981 when they pulled all the houses down. I think the depot you are refering to, was then B.R.S. (British Road Services) if I remember correctly. (British Road Services) if I remember correctly. Yes, that would make sense owing to the loading bays that were there. Thanks for the info. All the best. :) Meaks 19-06-2007, 12:28 Right, I've been to have a look and it seems that rather than a name change its just lost its name altogether! The sign on the corner of the street in question says 'LEADING TO BROAD OAKS' and then Broad Oaks itself runs along the back of Shoppacheck (there is a sign with arrows to indicate this). It seems that Fearnehough Street is now demoted to a 'Leading To'... :o Grahame 19-06-2007, 13:36 Right, I've been to have a look and it seems that rather than a name change its just lost its name altogether! You have done a good bit of detective work there Meaks and at least we can say Fearnehough Street is still there, but unfortunately there aren't any houses any more. :) Meaks 19-06-2007, 21:05 I've got a picture I took with my phone but can't get my laptop and phone to connect at the moment so can't upload it... Will try and post it up. Cheers Arthur RoseHadi 04-11-2007, 00:13 There was indeed a Ferneough Street, I was born in 1951 and our house was on the very corner of Ferneough Street and also on Stanniforth Road, our house is now a Shopacheck office. A little was up was Broad Oaks and opposite us was BRS. I remember well the Easter Parade with the May Queen that would proceed along Stanniforth Road and end up at High Hazels Park, there were two men who wore large papermache heads and hey used to scare the living daylights out of m. It was a long time ago but those were the days!!
