View Full Version : Tips for Parking in town
RoyalRegular 01-12-2004, 14:33 Here's a tip.
If you want to park in town on the pavement or double yellow lines, get yourself an old woman (preferably Asian).
I've just been in Hartshead, and there were three cars parked on the pavement-two containing old Asian women, and one with an old white granny. Traffic warden totally ignored them and did an empty car parked on the double yellows.
That must be the way to do it! I know what I shall be asking for this Christmas!
jumpingjonny 01-12-2004, 14:53 Hey up cocker!
If you want a further example of TURNING A BLIND EYE policing ,
look no further than Hillsborough corner on any night of the week.
I drove along Holme Lane last Sunday and counted 8 cars parked with 2 wheels on the pavement outside the local Pizza establishments.
Can anyone out there enlighten me of any rule changes that allow the police to ignore this dangerous practice.
Bikertec 01-12-2004, 15:11 Police officers in vans with cameras seem to be a law to them selfs because they park on double yellows dual carriageways and grass verges infact anywhere they want. My girl friend would not let me put what I really want to say so I had to be polite.8)

It's not a question of ignoring, more having to prioritise. The usual situation is one of responding to calls from the public, which unless they are 999 calls are stacking up all the time. Consequently, officers are running from one call to another with barely enough time to think. It is a luxury if there is enough time to deal with illegal parking if it is not actually causing an obstruction. Obviously, ideally officers would be plentiful and have enough time to deal with every offence, but unforunately this is just not the case. There is an argument for more traffic wardens, but the trend is to phase these out to decriminalise parking offences, giving council parking attendants responsibility for enforcing parking restrictions...a mistake in my view.
jumpingjonny 02-12-2004, 12:21 Cloud......It sounds like you're familiar with Police jargon!!!!!!!
Are you by any chance sat at a desk in a sleepy office waiting to cash in on your 30yrs service!

too busy hidding round corners (bottom of duke street every other day) awaiting to jump out on motorist going through the bus gate......:hihi: :hihi:
Where do all the cars now park that used to park in the car park near West Bar Police station which has recently closed?
muddycoffee 04-12-2004, 22:53 When I last had a motorbike. It was truly wonderful. There were loads of free Mbike parks all over town(including ALL pay and displays- all free for MCs). In addition, you could get there and back from woodseats in about 15 minutes.
I have recently noticed a secure motorbike anchor point on the surface car park behind the central fire station. If this is the way things are going. I will recommend everyone to get a 2 wheeled runabout, as this will both solve congestion, cut down of fuel consumption and make everyone much happier.
There's a run of spaces about 500 yards from Snig Hill that are completely unrestricted and always available. But I'm sworn to secrecy...
jumpingjonny 06-12-2004, 08:26 Guess what.......I was passing Holme Lane car park..Oops i mean Pizza shop! last night and nearly levelled a Margharita with extra cheese.
The gentleman accompaning the Pizza walked out into the middle of the road to climb into his car totally ignorant of my presence.
Now if i had killed that Pizza, would the police have bothered to turn up?

I got done for going through a bus gate last week :(
I've used this particular bus gate everyday for over a year as a rat run and never ONCE seen a bus on that road.

People easily forget though that the Transport and bus companies pay the Police for overtime shifts to do these operations so they are not being dragged away from other duties. But then again people easily forget not to drive through bus lanes:hihi:

Whoops:rolleyes:
pitsmoorlad 06-12-2004, 10:18 Well what's the point of bus / tram gates. Why can't I drive down City Road if I want to? I pay road tax to drive on the road, then get told by the car hating council that I have to go a longer route and use a bit more expensive petrol just so the bus or tram doesn't have to wait a couple of minutes. I reckon its an infringement of my human rights to be banned from driving along a bit of road that I've paid tax to drive on.
Let's start a "Drivers For Justice" group who climb up the town hall dressed as Tinkerbell or Catwoman, and make our voices heard.
JOIN ME FELLOW DRIVERS !!
You seem to have a chip on the shoulder about it then? I never said it was right or wrong just pointing out a few facts.
Problem with the council is they want to build multi storey car parks but take away surface car parks, and although the muti story parks will outweigh the spaces of a surface one we still are left with a city centre with very few parking spaces.
Sunday is a shocking day for parking in the city centre.

That pizza had a very lucky escape. It's a good job it was only a margharita; imagine what would have happened if it had been a pepperoni! I reckon you would have been the one spending a week in the Northern General.
I've had a few close shaves with a few doner kebabs, particularly whilst driving through Broomhill, but nothing that equals the incident you had.
I hope you're recovering okay but I must stress that if you look clearly in the Highway Code, there's a section dedicated to pizzas and kebabs.
It's under the heading: How to Flout the Tram Gates at Hillsborough Corner.
