View Full Version : Caffeine
Yodameister 01-12-2004, 14:11 I used to drink about 4 cups of tea a day.
Now I've switched to decaffeinated coffee at work and don't drink tea at home (well, maybe once a week when I'm at a friend's house or something)
I think that I've been sleeping better and feel a lot more chilled out at work and generally.
Do people think it is psychosomatic, or is it likely that cutting down to that extent has had something to do with it, or likely to be something unrelated?
pussycat 01-12-2004, 14:29 I do not proclaim myself to be an expert on such things, but...
I reckon caffeine is a really potent drug. I hardly ever drink coffee (maybe two or three times a year, and even then it's only crappy instant stuff). I try to drink only herbal or fruit teas.
But once in a cafe I asked for "water" and ended up with a "mocha". I suppose they might sound kind of similar in a noisy place. :suspect: I drank it anyway as I was in polite company and didn't want to make a fuss.
Well, blow me, you may as well have given me a couple of lines of coke! I couldn't stop talking and probably made a right tit of myself. I actually skipped across the room at one point ! Eventually someone twigged and it took three cups of camomile and honey tea to bring me down. And then the headache set in a couple of hours later...:(
So, yes, I think your better sleeping and chilled out-ness, may well be to do with reducing your caffeine intake. You could always try reintroducing it and seeing if you become a tired, stressed, mardy bugger...
Martin_s 01-12-2004, 14:34 I did summer camp over in the states, working with kids diagnosed with AD(H)D amongst other things... and as diet was a big thing we were on fat and carbohydrates rather than sugar..
I can't say I was completely caffeine free as we did manage to get one or two cups of tea every few days but after a week of the diet, if anyone had a can of coke they'd be wired for around an hour... It was like P'cat was saying... it's as if someone put you on speed for a few hours..
Everything in moderation I'd say :)

In defense of coffee ...
I heard that it's a good cure for boldness ... however you'd have to drink about 70 cups a day ... or rub coffee grounds directly in to your scalp.
NatalieSheff 01-12-2004, 15:48 have you tried tetley well being tea bags, . ginseng in em very nice

I'm having a cup of tetley's right now, with a tiny amount of ground up cardimom pods
Add evaporated milk; squeeze the teabag until it's a lovely shade of brown.
I'll have three or four cups a day (sometimes more at the weekend).
It's a bit of an exact science getting the quantities precise, and it is affecting my sleep, but I love the taste so much
Ah well, it means I can join the late night Live chat :hihi:
I'm drinking water. Coffee and tea are foul- water is much much better for you....

I'm strictly decaf (or green tea) ... unless I'm climbing mountains ...
Apparently caffine is also a diuretic (make you wanna wee a lot).
Oh ... and I'm always meek and timid Martin :P :P

Does the decaf help you concentrate J? You know when you really have to focus on something, say like a tax return or something, do find that it helps?
:P
Nomme
I'm a caffeine allergy sufferer, much as it has its good properties, the bad really outweigh them for me.
I'm like a rubber ball on caffeine, can't concentrate, dash around all over and suffer shocking insomnia.
Though having said that, I suffer terrible insomnia anyway, hence posting this at 1.27 am.
Incidentally, I stopped having coffee at all about 5 or 6 years ago, I was drinking it by the gallon. Much more chilled out but I've recently noticed that my tea intake has increased and I think my body is pulling a sneaky addiction via tea. So, next shopping trip its de caff tea for me, even though you have to roll the tea bag with the iron and a road flattener to get any flavour :D

Why would anyone want a cure for boldness?
I wish someone would invent a cure for baldness though... it would stop me worrying and counting my hairs every morning ;)

Which in itself is a fairly good cure for boldness :P
