fox20thc 12-06-2007, 10:49 Why not form a group - (you have to be constitutionalised) and apply for a small grant. See the latest figures below.
COMMUNITY groups have received £14,000 of handouts for projects across Sheffield. The money was distributed by the city council’s Small Grants Fund, to schemes ranging from a carnival to a parents’ support group.
The highest award - £2,775 - went to Shiregreen Children and Families Project.
Other awards were made to :
Darnall Forum for its annual carnival;
Agewell groups around the city;
Oughtibridge Village Community Association;
St John’s Lunch Club;
Handsworth and Woodhouse Art Society;
Assist Sheffield, and Burngreave After School Study Support Project.
Groups can apply for up to £10,000. So there you go, get organised and apply for some funding :D
kittenta 12-06-2007, 10:53 Problem is, to form a group you actually have to have enough people who care, which isn't often the case. good luck to anyone who gives it a go though :)
Ms Macbeth 12-06-2007, 11:24 Good info fox, there's money around for voluntary stuff - helpful to know how and where to get it. :thumbsup:
Does anybody know what kind of limitations there are on applying for a grant?

There are some details on the Council's website http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/index.asp?pgid=84303
If you need help and advice setting up a new group, Voluntary Action Sheffield (VAS) have a great service http://www.vas.org.uk/smallgroups.html
Good luck.

I sent a message to a Hillsborough group a while back...I didn't even get a reply from them. So some turn away offers of help it seems!

Most groups are run by volunteers, so sometimes prospective helpers get "lost"!
If you want to know about volunteering opportunities, you could contact

We've not heard from Gleadless Valley yet have we. They're the ones who've been moaning, whining and bitching on the S.F. about how nobody i.e. The Council, does anything for them. Not all the Valley posters of course, but I'm sure we and they know who they are. So here's your opportunity, whingers, someone is showing the way for you to help yourselves, get on with it!
there's a lot of working involved in getting funding & getting people to do the work they've signed up to do, with or without funding is far, far more difficult. & VAS is extremely good at supporting groups who need help in getting funding. The problem is that even with all this funding, there's a very low success rate of these groups usually due to personality conflicts and inability to follow through on promised commitments.

If you're concerned about Gleadless Valley, and by this post I presume you are, why don't you get something started?

price probably doesn't live in that area. There have been several threads from people of GV bemoaning the lack of facilities for their young people and he may just be pointing out to those who wanted something done that this might be of use to them. :help:

I've recently advised a new volunteer group in my area how to apply for a small council grant. A couple of hundred quid is all they need to pay for room hire and some publicity materials - but even a small amount of money goes a long way if it encourages community participation. :thumbsup:

Exactly Red, I just thought it was apt to make people aware of the grants available. No excuse not to do something if people really want to is there. :)

The Manager 15-06-2007, 22:55 yeh thats good we could do with a park up on wisewood , labour dont seem to want to give us one !!!!!
As I've said before, I'm up for it, Jellytots received money from the small grants fund so I know what I'm doing.
I just need people and since only two people have volunteered that's not going to get us anywhere.
I can't and won't do it on my own so if I hear from a few more people we can get started.
Still no response? There's bloody surprise!
