Dirtydog 11-02-2005, 10:05 I remember been taken into barnards a few times as a kid, it was a real treat - like a little aladdins cave of sweets and toys. Mickyboy 11-02-2005, 10:19 I remember the milk machine it was the only place apert from Cherry's dairy on Staniforth Road you could get milk at night if you ran out. For us it depended which 71 bus came 1st. Didn't they also have a machine that used to sell boxes of chocolate's too. Imagine how long the'yd last these days. kirky 11-02-2005, 15:13 Originally posted by manortopper I remember Barnard's - and I remember thee Kirky too....... gis a clue then:D owdlad 11-02-2005, 16:02 Originally posted by manortopper I remember Barnard's - and I remember thee Kirky too....... Does that give you a clue!!! manortopper 11-02-2005, 16:55 Should that be crowbar? Or growbag? manortopper 11-02-2005, 16:57 And I do hope that comment isn't levelled at anyone in particular. dee40 25-02-2005, 11:40 I remember barnards and the others mentioned like the rex and ten town.:) jiginc 20-03-2005, 21:52 The strange thing about the machines an Barnards was that if your mate put his money in and dialled a coffee as the machine was making it you could change the dial and get a coffee with tea and soup very tasty. But the cold drinks machine would also change and give you an orange with cola and a lime. The best was a Mars bar, from the machine, at 6 in the morning on a frosty day, Better than a Mars ice cream. squeakyclean 02-08-2005, 18:28 Mrs Barnard used to live accross the road from us after she retired (in the late 80's) She was getting on a bit but used to drive a Ford capri around. kingfisher 06-08-2005, 13:57 Does anyone remember the name of the couple who kept the sweet shop(nearest to Prince Edward school)we used to go in there on a sunday evening for a pot of oxo,i seem to think they were named Keating but am not sure at all about that lazarus 07-08-2005, 12:48 From being 15 up to 20 years old I used to hang around the Top of the Manor including around Barnards. They were the first shop to install a load of vending machines outside their shop. As well as the hot drinks machine, there was a chocolate machine, several cigarette machines and a cold milk machine, it cost sixpence for a carton (two and a half pence ) but if you hit the machine in a certain area you could get one for nothing.I used to knock around with the Steve Oldfield whos father had Oldfields Grocery shop just down from Barnards. Next door to Barnards was Goodisons Greengrocers, they had a lovely daughter called Sheila and she killed herself over some a******e when she was sixteen , such a waste. Barnards started with just a Toy shop, then they bought the Sweet shop next door and later they built a Hair Dressers over the Sweet shop, I have not been around there for over forty years now. SASBEAR 16-09-2005, 05:36 yes - I remeber it well - when I was 6 or 7 my grandma used to have her hair done in the hairdressers above. when she finished she used to buy a bar of chocolate for my sister and I. mrsnoo 18-09-2005, 19:35 Does anyone know the names of the Barnards? I have distant relarives by that name and wondered if any are these Barnards or if any of them are still alive. sheffco 26-09-2005, 15:50 Pit Hill - - - where the fire station is now. Spend a lot of effort dragging a piece of Anderson shelter up it in a damp day, (about six of you) then sit on and fly down to the bottom. The idea was to skim across the Pit Pond. Never made it - - got many a hiding for the state of my clothes. Andy the dj 19-01-2008, 20:48 I remember Barnards at Manor top it never seemed to close not even at Christmas. I think it was one of the last shops in sheffield to have a cigarette machine on the wall out side,i remember when we lived at Gleadless,my dad driving up late at night when he ran out of fags. My mum and dads friend worked there in the late 70s Betty Sargent her husband Ron was a train driver. Reesh2052 20-01-2008, 07:47 I just remember Barnards as a magical shop with everything in it. In a way we've lost lots of fantastic shops over the years. I spent my chilhood living on Ridgehill Avenue in Intake and at the top of our road there were 8 shops(does anyone have photos). There was a grocery shop called Baumgarts, a toyshop cum hardware shop called Partriges, a wool shop/haberdashery called Dawsons, a newsagent called Horsefields, a hairdressers(can't remember the name), a greengrocers called Haslams, a butchers and a sweet shop with fag machine outside. Those were the days. Nw there isn't a shop in sight. Sad really!!!! I suppose it's a sign of our deteriorating society, no doubt in the next 30 years this country will end up as derelict as many areas in the States. Gemima 20-01-2008, 18:30 I remember Barnards, used to live at Birley and stand at the bus stop. There were lots of shelters if I remember. We used to run in and buy allsorts of sweets, we often missed our bus.:hihi: Andy the dj 20-01-2008, 19:10 Not just Bernards at manor top that was good the whole shopping area was better than it is today there was fine fair supermarket where Neto is today and Fred Hartleys opposit, a bit like wilkinsons is today i suppose.Challange supermarket was in the old pic.house,my mother used to by cloths from Fashion Focus.and Dont forget Beckets fab Chippy.there was a lot more shops on there,my parents did nost of their shopping at Manor Top,but after all these years cant remember the other shops, apart from going with my dad and also school to manor library. Shakespeare 21-01-2008, 12:07 I think most of their trade came from the bus stop people. They had a newsagent and sweet shop in the top half of the shop and toys in the other. You had to go through it to get to the ladies hair saloon on the top floor. I would go with my mum when young and she had to buy me toys! On the stairs were some shelves and on them were old stock that they just forgot about. They were boxes of Hornby dublo and Triang trains etc from the 50's or 60's. My mother persuaded Joyce (who worked there) to get Mr Barnard to sell them and I bought some of them. Wish I had kept them they be worth a packet with mint boxes! trophyman 21-01-2008, 12:17 Not just Bernards at manor top that was good the whole shopping area was better than it is today there was fine fair supermarket where Neto is today and Fred Hartleys opposit, a bit like wilkinsons is today i suppose.Challange supermarket was in the old pic.house,my mother used to by cloths from Fashion Focus.and Dont forget Beckets fab Chippy.there was a lot more shops on there,my parents did nost of their shopping at Manor Top,but after all these years cant remember the other shops, apart from going with my dad and also school to manor library. mitchells d.i.y. next door to in-trim fitness, stocked some great wallpaper and timber off-cuts outside against the wall. built a fair few garden things with that stuff lyndix 21-01-2008, 12:21 Not just Bernards at manor top that was good the whole shopping area was better than it is today there was fine fair supermarket where Neto is today and Fred Hartleys opposit, a bit like wilkinsons is today i suppose.Challange supermarket was in the old pic.house,my mother used to by cloths from Fashion Focus.and Dont forget Beckets fab Chippy.there was a lot more shops on there,my parents did nost of their shopping at Manor Top,but after all these years cant remember the other shops, apart from going with my dad and also school to manor library. My mum worked at Trevor Taylors hardware and fancy goods shop, next door but one to becketts, I think there was a tailors next door. She worked at that shop for years, it was a long thin shop that sold absolutely everything. I had my first saturday job there and got £1 an hour:) sandie 21-01-2008, 20:32 I rememberBarnards as going to the new CTS at Gleedless and living in Woodhouse we used to catch the number 23 (I think that was the Woodhouse Bus No) The milk machine used to accept sixpences. We used to find bits of lead from our house flashings under the windows( in those days we had scolops in cemi circles for decoration) I found if you cut ound a sixpence and used sandpaper to smooth you could create a sixpence and they worked in the milk machine outside Barnards, not only that they worked in other machiens. There were three of us went into production selling them for 2d each until we got caught, as it was in those days the local bobby would take you home and then you were in trouble. I got the clip round the ear the local bobby left it there as they did in those days to let the familly sort it. Then my dad gave me 2&6 and I asked what was that for he said the clip was for doing wrong the 2&6 was for addmitting to it and I thougt this was great, but there was a string attached the 2&6 and the next 6 weeks pocket money was to go into the Charity box inside the shop at Barnards and he came with me to make sure I did. That taught me a lot in the mid 60's, but now I know that lesson gave me the values I have today. sharonxxxx 21-01-2008, 21:36 i remember as kids every easter without fail we had to wait till easter monday in the manor club after the easter bonnet parade had finished before we could go up 2 barnards for there easter eggs as they reduced them to half price on the monday lol this was in the late 70s oooooooooo i loved that shop it sort of used to be in 2 halves if i remember correctly the bottom bit sold toys n stuff while the top half sold sweets ect n ciggies xxx good memories escort1 21-01-2008, 22:06 Used to get off the bus there on way to school and would call in for 5 Park Drive and a 1/4 of liqurice and blackcurrants. Remember the older guy, Mr Barnard ? who smoked a pipe and the smell drifted through the shop. Sometimes we would call at Hibberts sweet shop on other shopping precinct next to chemist in the same shop as now occupied by the Halifax agency, glass jars full of sherbert lemons, pineapple cubes, penny liquorices.Happy days! firesmudge 21-01-2008, 23:17 Pink & white striped paper bags that the sweets always stuck too on the inside escort1 21-01-2008, 23:28 Just remembered it was cigars he smoked not a pipe. flyingpixie 08-03-2008, 21:50 I remember having my haircuts above Barnards and I remember going for sweets there (usually aniseed balls) after attending St John Ambulance Brigade. I also remember Fine-Fare, and the little coloured wooden chairs in Manor Library. I saw my first film at the Rex cinema. I lived on Archdale Road at the time..No. 106. My name then was Fiona Fairclough and I hung out with Coral Smith, Jayne Hoyland, Jane Kitchen, Michelle Bushell... jiginc 15-03-2008, 16:46 Barnards started as two toy shops one in Woodhouse and the one at Manor Top. Not sure which they had first. They lived on Woodhouse Road up a short lane between two houses. The sweet shop was originally a sarsaparilla bar run by an old couple who lived on Ridgehill Avenue. When they sold up Barnards purchased it and converted it to the sweet shop. The hairdressers up stairs came later. When Barnards closed it was taken over by Alan Thorpe. Next to Barnards was a bakers. At the other end of the row of shops was a butchers run by an old lady (well she was when I knew her) and her son. The family had a chalet at Humberston fitties. It’s still there walked past it the other day. sharonxxxx 19-03-2008, 22:39 Had a huge Chocolate Egg in the window every Easter! that reminds me of easter in the manor club easter bonnet parade and there was a turn on, i remember crying in the concert room to go and buy my easter eggs my mum n dad always made me wait till after the easter bonnet parade had finsished ,,because by then the easter eggs in barnards had been reduced to half price me and my frind would run like the clappers up to barnards( while mum n dad stayed in the pub) to get our eggs then wed scoff them on the way down and all afternnoon then spew our guts up ha ha ha :hihi: the_rudeboy 19-03-2008, 23:24 Bloody 'ell I'd forgotten about Barnards.
