View Full Version : Should Horses be banned from public roads?
Mini_Cooper 10-06-2007, 20:46 I find these creatures a complete menace on the road. They are out of control and have no place on our roads.
Should Jockeys pay road tax if they wish to ride a horse on the road, and display the tax disc on the horse's nose?
I piped my horn to let the horse and jockey know I was approaching to overtake the horse, and the stupid animal went bezerk (the jockey not the horse) sticking 2 fingers up and shouting obscenities at me.
What do other people think about horses on roads?
Provided the riders go by the rules of the road, I have no problems with them.
I always give them teh same sort of room I'd give when passing a wobbly cyclist.
I think I've encountered more problems from moronic, ignorant drivers than I have from horse-riders.
Mentalmomma 10-06-2007, 20:48 Not sure about being on them, but its about time the riders/owners had to clean up there poo!
melthebell 10-06-2007, 20:53 lol, horses where on the roads before cars

Can't blame the horse for needing to do a plop at the side of the road. If the Jockey did a poo in the road that would be out of order
stephenr 10-06-2007, 20:55 They were here before the automobile so no they should not be banned. Should be other way when looking how some people drive.
Get a grip these animals were the first vehicle on the road

You're a driving instructor? Try reading the Highway Code:
190: Animals. When passing animals, drive slowly. Give them plenty of room and be ready to stop. Do not scare animals by sounding your horn or revving your engine.
You were in the wrong.

Given the implication from your signature that you may have something to do with driver training (?), I am somewhat dismayed to read that you felt it necessary to sound your horn to alert the rider. I think if you re-read your highway code you might understand why you received the reaction you did. Just in case you haven't got a copy to hand let me remind you..
Other road users
190: Animals. When passing animals, drive slowly. Give them plenty of room and be ready to stop. Do not scare animals by sounding your horn or revving your engine. Look out for animals being led or ridden on the road and take extra care and keep your speed down at left-hand bends and on narrow country roads. If a road is blocked by a herd of animals, stop and switch off your engine until they have left the road. Watch out for animals on unfenced roads.
191: Horse riders. Be particularly careful of horses and riders, especially when overtaking. Always pass wide and slow. Horse riders are often children, so take extra care and remember riders may ride in double file when escorting a young or inexperienced horse rider. Look out for horse riders' signals and heed a request to slow down or stop. Treat all horses as a potential hazard and take great care.
I suggest it wasn't the horse that was the menace.

LibertyBell 10-06-2007, 21:03 I was cycling behind a horse the other day when it stopped suddenly and my head went up its rear.

Maybe the Highway Code should be consulted?
Whilst the horn is there to be used to alert other people to your presence, it is signalling that is important when overtaking.
Perhaps it is the lack of signalling (either by hand or electronically) that agitated the rider sufficiently to gesticulate at you.
Next time you may wish to use your indicators at the same time as your horn?

There was a time when any keen gardener would dash outside and lay claim to horse poo to put on their roses. It's actually quite clean and hygenic unlike carnivore or omnivore plops.

I know, they can't help going, but why do the owners get away with not cleaning it up, we had to walk on a flamin busy road a couple of weeks ago with our children because of masses of the stuff all over the PATH not the Road. You have to clear dog poop or be fined, why not Horse poop!

How about this? road tax for the horse, say £10 per annum and the tax disc to be stuck on the horse's nose?

Erm, I wouldn't thought there would be many horses on the roads in a major city such as Sheffield to cause anyone to have a good quality moan. There are loads where I live as I'm out in the sticks, but still it doesn't cause me any problems. I just drive around them with care thats all. They have just as much right to use the road than any other person. Besides, horses were using the roads long before cars were ever invented.
As for hooting at the horse and rider, I'm not surprised he flagged you as you could have easily spooked the horse which could have resulted in a tragedy.
What an idiot, by sounding your horn behind a horse you put yourself, the rider and the horse in danger. It can be dangerous to hack horses on roads but most riders use quiet country roads, and they expect the road users to be sensible and adhere to the highway code. Beeping your horn is the stupidest thing you can possibly do.

tiz all about logistics
9/10 when you are walking your dog the rear end of the dog is infront of you, thus in full view. On a horse the rear end will be in your "blind spot" :hihi: thus out of site, plus it gives the gardners time to run out with the shovel and place on the garden :D.
plus 8/10 a female horse rider is allways a fine example of some top tottie  :hihi: :hihi:

Even better, how about we close this trolling thread.
I hoenstly don't think you do much for yourself by kicking off threads that areobviously just designed to irritate and wind people up.
Please stop it, and take a look at this:
