View Full Version : Wanted Price For Boiler Fitting
dulcet69 10-06-2007, 12:24 AM Hi the gas boiler serving the inground swimming pool has packed up! great just as the nice weather seems to be starting. We have not got any hope of buying a brand new one and there is one on Ebay that seems to be moreorless the same as the one that has seized. I am thinking of bidding on it, however, can a gasman out there give us an approximate price for the installation of this said boiler. PLEASE

Hi there.....first of all are you sure your old one can't be repaired?
Complete-Heat 10-06-2007, 12:56 AM Same advice as plumbheat. Try and see if yours can be fixed first
I'd never fit a secondhand boiler and i'm sure many of the others who regularly post on here wouldn't either.
You dont know its condition, and why is it being sold on anyway. It would probably arrive with bits missing and more than likely without the manufacturers instructions.
dulcet69 10-06-2007, 01:04 AM Hi the one on ebay is being sold as the person is filling in their swimming pool and selling everything filter, pump etc. Says its in mint good working order! however I just dont know what to do - theres no way we can afford a grand plus for a new swimming pool boiler. Temperature was 58 degrees in it today however my three kids still jumped in and then out again!!!!!!!!
rmc86uk 11-06-2007, 04:33 PM You can't afford a boiler for it but you could afford your own swimming pool?! I wonder how many forumers on here have their own swimming pool!
jl-heating 11-06-2007, 05:11 PM should not be a hard job to swop. i am thinking it is a commercial boiler for a pool .. so you will need an engineer with his commercial ticket .. also he will need to have corgi in his name and not the company he works for ..
i personally would buy the secondhand boiler even if only for a spare and get a few quotes on the repair, as long as the unit is water tight it can only be a part .. and labour to fit .. most companies do a free quote on repairs and only charge on a successful repair .
good luck .. :) hey and dont listen to the whines of the people above , enjoy that pool you have obviously earned it .. :)
Gavbriggs 12-06-2007, 09:52 AM dont get a second hand one. my guess is it s just a standard boiler. if you could pm me the make model and specs(if available) i will try to find an alternative. i could always come out and have a look and give you a price on repair. if no repair possible then as above i can get an alternative. also any boilers fitted theese days have to be condensing
Complete-Heat 12-06-2007, 10:32 PM Gavbriggs. Its got to be a commercial boiler if its being used to heat a swimming pool. Commercial boilers are still exempt from having to be condensing.
I'd have to prob agree with John. Maybe buy the one on ebay and use it to repair the one you already have. That way you are not replacing a secondhand boiler, just using it for parts.

there is dedicated forum here also a help tab for advice .. for new probably just over a grand for a small pool, it depends really what temperature rise you are after .. also is it indoor or outdoor set up .. ?
are they to use the existing flue (only if it can be guaranteed for the life of the new boiler )
if you can get a exact replica of the model already in i would say a mornings work to install and commisson .
if using a different boiler allow a little longer but still done in a day obviously extra materials to and labour is involved.
good luck .. :) hope the above links helps.

i know very little about swimming pools (except that there is water and poeple half naked getting wrinkly for no reason, oh and the fella who always does lengths and bumps in to everyone) why would it have to be commercial(legally or technically?) i have seen a combi used to heat a koi pond, the pond would have made a small to mid range pool! unfortunately we disconnected it as it was fitted to an outside wall (enclosure was not roofed and open to the elements!). i suppose it would have to be specialist kit to function correctly.
the exempt from condensing is ridiculus considering, it is a luxury item!
dulcet69 14-06-2007, 03:50 PM Hi there glad to see you all having a little chat about it. Matt (PLUMBHEAT) has been out to look it at. In answer to the points raised and what I know!
- It is a standard boiler (very old though!) not a commercial one. - Purex Tropical Isle.
- Did not get the one off Ebay.
- Matt is battling with it to try and get it working. He has taken a part off it - not sure what bit it is - he did tell me but can not remember. The boiler is obsolete so the part he has ordered is a generic replacement - we are hoping with fingers crossed that this will fix it - if not Matt says it will have to be a new boiler. Other thing is that the gas doesnt seem to be coming through efficiently so thats another problem.
We inherited this swimming pool when we purchased the property and got to use it for a month when we moved in before it was shut down for winter. We are now wanting to use it (obviously not today though!) preferably heated. I have three kids chomping at the bit - they would go in whatever the temperature however I am more picky.
Any tips, advice, warnings or whatever will be greatly appreciated and if they can be posted on here - I can tell Matt to keep having a look.
All tips rewarded with a swim - once its heated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks everyone who has replied. Sue x
dulcet69 14-06-2007, 03:53 PM Oh and as for size of swimming pool - its approximately 28ft x 14 ft.
Gavbriggs 17-06-2007, 01:05 PM i'm sure matt knows what he is talking about and will get you a solution. i would be interested as to how heat is transferred from the boiler to the pool water. is there a seperate external heat exchange? would it be possible to connect a new condenser? would it work?
Gavbriggs 17-06-2007, 01:07 PM tell matt to try this site for parts. http://www.pools4home.co.uk/frames/spares/spares_frameset.htm?description/purex_tropic_heater.htm
sorry for long link
jl-heating 17-06-2007, 01:23 PM maybe some kind of plate exchange or calorifier, similar to my old engineering days, using headers and tubes with turbulators to increse the surface area of the tubes .. similar to an air con in a modern day car ..
the gas needs to 20mbar at appliance, or no less than 1 mbar difference from input gas . depends on incomers..
good luck and yes we will be taking up the offer of the swimm me and my 9 kids inlaws and cousins .. :)
faisaljaved 24-06-2007, 08:29 PM can someone tell me how much it cost to replace old boiler with a new combi boiler
jl-heating 24-06-2007, 08:40 PM depends on system you have in your house .. model of boiler you want and controls you need etc .. also amount of pipework/labour time requiered to complete ..
who ever you choose they will need to come and survey the job ..
the best tip i can give you is get a few quotes,
ask for qualifications and insurance proof etc also a few references/portfolio cant hurt. :)
good luck . :)
Complete-Heat 24-06-2007, 10:14 PM can someone tell me how much it cost to replace old boiler with a new combi boiler
My answer would be the same as John's.
I would say try and budget a little extra for a decent boiler....there is some rubbish out there :gag:.
Get more than 1 quote and compare like with like. Make sure your quote is in writing and details everything your getting including boiler make and model.
Public liability insurance is a must, and ALWAYS check their qualifications on their CORGI card.
dulcet69 25-06-2007, 03:49 PM Hi Matt hope u will read this - can you contact me - lost your mobile number off my phone and wondering how its going with the thingymijig you have ordered for the boiler.
