base2001 08-06-2007, 15:00 Does anyone know about laptops here?
which one would you choose?

or

Thanks
the second one... for the extra £20 or whatever the spec is way above the other...
johnbradley 08-06-2007, 15:33 dont buy acer if you want a long-lasting, durable machine.
the quality of materials is poor...they wear out, and their spares division is manned by...2 people...for the whole country. Nice.
everyone has their favourites, but check the laptop site for 'asus' - much, much better machines, with a 2 year warranty as standard.
I have 2 Acer laptops, and have been using one for 20 months+ (on average it's used 6+ hours per day).
After 9 months of use, the keyboard needed replacing (was in warrenty, so not a big problem). Other than that, it's been fine. Build quality is a little flimsy as John points out, but I recon if you treat it with care and respect, an Acer is good value for money.
I agree - avoid Acer, they are a budget brand and have the build qualiity and support to match.

best of luck with it geoffrey, i hope your machines last the distance, although can i make a couple of predictions?
within the next year, one of the following will occur:
power socket fault on the laptop.
screen fault.
faulty disk drive.
keyboard fault. out of warranty this time.
make a note of this post, and if they are both still tiptop i will run round tescos on ecclesall road stark naked:)
Never had a problem with Acer - had an acer for about 3 years, no issues, now got a new laptop and the acer still works, - handed to my sister, no problems with it
base2001 08-06-2007, 18:00 thanks, if any one know of a decent laptop, looking at spending £500 on one, so if any one knows, let me know
regards

lol, ok, will hold you to that, but instead of running naked around tescos, how about you just send me hard cash?

My daughter has just bought a ASUS laptop a serious peice of machinery for about £430. 2 year guarantee 3.4 processing speed web cam higher definition etc.
littleboo 06-01-2008, 16:52 i bought a toshiba p200 from pc world £550
17" wide screen
its really is a great laptop
word of warning...before i bought this my first choice was an Advent...pc worlds own make..i had within 2 weeks each one had a fault...could have just been a bad batch but the quality difference between the Advent and the Toshiba was very noticable.
Advent isnt PC worlds own make... thats a very common misconception
SimpyTimpy 06-01-2008, 19:49 I have an Advent Laptop which cost around £450 which is fantastic, and I also have a Lenovo x61 ThinkPad which is from work, and retails for around £1,200 and both seem to be good build quality. Advent is a pretty decent make.
ghettostan 06-01-2008, 21:18 i would go for the second one for 2 reason
reason:
1 cheaper
2 looks nicer and the spec is better.
cant comment on acer as i have never had one, i always go for dell, toshiba or sonys.
hope you pick the right one :)

Speaking of Lenovo, i have just got the missus this one http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Lenovo_3000_N200_0769_TY2BMUK/version-1.asp
Im well impressed with it, got it with XP as vista is rubbish and got her an extra gig memory, and must admit, 1, it flies and 2, im jelous now:hihi::suspect:

They aren't?
I could've sworn PC World was owned by DSG... who own THIS (http://www.ipo.gov.uk/tm/t-find/t-find-number?detailsrequested=C&trademark=1355430) trademark, as well as THIS (http://www.ipo.gov.uk/tm/t-find/t-find-number?detailsrequested=C&trademark=2047898) one.
:D
As for Acer... i've only ever had one hardware complaint with Acers - sadly it is nigh on impossible to get any support from them. Very nice budget machines, but you just have to hope nothing goes wrong.
