Can anybody recommend any good pubs that allow dogs and serve food.

There's a couple out at Edale and Hathersage, but does anybody know of any closer to Sheffield?

And does anybody know where we can take the dog to watch the footy? (premiership matches, mostly)

I've been in the Fat cat with ma dags before. Two greyhounds and a lurcher. The women behind the bar said it was fine, dunno if thats all the time or only when it quiet.

Great beer, excellent food, crackin atmosphere.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

We've tried the Cricket Inn, Penny Lane, Totley. That's quite good, and you get lots of dogs in there. Brude loves making friends!

If ever you're out in Derbyshire, the Red Lion in Litton does great food - and dogs are very welcome. In fact, they're more welcome than kids!

Three Merry Lads maybe? In town the Kelham Island Tav also does food, excellent beer, and I've definately seen dogs there as well. Foods simple, but it's worth it for the beer, and the lovely surroundings.

www.doggiepubs.org.uk has some listings - altho' it's not very comprehensive.

On a similar topic, does anyone know if the Rising Sun on Abbey Lane allows four-legged friends through the door? It's soon to be our local pub - and Jazz the mutt will be most displeased if she's not allowed the occasional half of bitter!

Cheers, Carrie

The Sportsman at Redmires (just past the old Lodge Moor Hospital).

In fact we seem to get volunteers to look after our giddy pup when we're eating!

Also, probably THE best home made pub food in Sheffield, and outragously cheap for the quality.

We go to the Grouse near Froggatt Edge pretty often. Very good nosh at reasonable prices, and they welcome the dog as long as he's on a lead. In fact, I think they recognize us by him.

If it's just beer you fancy the Sheaf View on Heeley green is not only fantastic (although you have to fight the beardy beer bores to get served), but happy to let the canines in. Is really good in summer as has a nice outdoorsy bit.

The Bridge Inn at Ford (below Ridgeway off White Lane).
Good walking spot and good food.

Fagans on Broad Lane does superb saturday and sunday lunches - amazing roast beef dinners and all day breakfasts, homecooked lamb and veggie curries, lots of fish and vegetarian choices, real homemade chips - not freezer chips.

Dogs welcome in pub. Very friendly and laid back ambience.

For anyone who doesn't know it Fagans is an unspoilt old pub just at the edge of the city centre. The landlord is exceptionally proud of his cooking - and his beer

You'll get one of the best pints of Guinness in Sheffield and beautifully kept Moonshine. Even the Tetleys is nice.

The Hare & hounds at Dore used to be a good dog pub, as druids used to goi in at late night & take dogs in there! I used to take my russell in there when i was a regular.
Thats when it was hardcore!, good Rock music, plenty of disfunctional people.
Now,it's run by those cheesedicks at 'Ember inns' the pub is now for the upercrust! & is doing bad, i'm so glad!

Purely in the name of research my two canine friends Bonnie and Clive and myself, plus one human went to the Bridge Inn at Ford for lunch today to test their dog/food policy. Very friendly welcome, really bad house red wine (screw top Valpolicella which I was assured should be ok as it was 'only opened yesterday'...food typical staple 'pub grub'okay. Only drawback is that dogs are not allowed into main bar of pub so you sit in some kind of draughty corridor thing from where through little windows you can see into the main bar where it looks all cosy and warm and well - better than the corridor. Felt like a little waif from a Dickens novel with my nose pressed up against the window looking at all the rich people having a better time inside.... dogs were ok though.

Clever dog that Strix - does he not like a walk or a bit of ball throwing like most of 'em then?

Clever dog that Strix - does he not like a walk or a bit of ball throwing like most of 'em then? Yup, but he thinks 'playing for the corner' is the whole point of the game. You should see his footwork! And he's spot on at passing! Plays with his paws, unlike alot of dogs, who refer to use their nose.

Do you know any dog friendly pubs/restaurants in Sheffield please?

I know of a lot outside of Sheffield and there are quite a few out on the greenbelt.
I'm looking for anywhere really, I believe there's some nice one's around Lodgemoor too.

If you know of any could you list them below please? I think most pubs are happy to have dogs in the beer garden and the ones like Aunt Sally's you can eat with a dog as long as you eat outside.

What about the pubs/restuarant where you can take the dog into the pub? I know of one restaurant (can't remember what it's called) near Lady Bower I think where the dog can sit under the table while you eat, do you know of any like that?

Just be interested to know for future reference!

Hi

In Derbyshire our dogs have been happily welcomed inside these pubs... They're all lovely places too:

The Pub at Monsal Head
The Little John in Hathersage
The Barrel, Bretton nr Hathersage
The Travellers Rest nr Hope
The Red Lion in Litton

In Sheffield we've seen dogs in the Fat Cat, Kelham Island - but can't think of anywhere else off hand...

We would like to go out for a nice meal on friday night, but we will have been at work all day so I don't want to leave Gadget all day plus the evening as well.

With this lovely weather, there must be plenty of places where we can sit outside and bring him?!

We Live in the Lowfield/Heeley area, so somewhere walking distance would be great.

Anyone know where we could go?

Katie,

There's some up at Lodge Moor that allow dogs (I think I'm thinking of the right place...)

Also, the Pomona on Ecclesall Road - you can sit in the beer garden there.

Unfortunately a lot have stopped serving food outside for some bizarre reason! I know of a website with lists of dog friendly eating establishments - if I can find it, I'll post it.

The problem in town is the lack of beer gardens I suppose....

does the Rutland do food on Friday nights?
Somebody on the thread for the august meet said they do dogs (I think)

Or catch the train out to Edale. Both of the pubs up there welcome dogs and both do really good food

(actually - anybody fancy a dog meet in Edale on Friday night? :D )

Strix
18-07-2006, 06:50 PM
Right according to www.theaa.com :

The Fat Cat - town do food and dogs
as do
Rockingham Arms - Wentworth
The Tickled Trout - Barlow
Millstone Inn - Hathersage
The Strines Inn - Bradfield
The Maynard Arms - Grindleford
Miners Arms - Eyam

But ring and ask first, as I've been very annoyed to find out in the past that some pubs list themselves as 'dog friendly' when what they mean is they tolerate guide dogs

Sorry strix - I tend not to go online in the evenings cos I've still got the slowest dial-up in the world, ever!

I think OH has decided we are going to go to The Strines Inn - it sounded so lovely that he said he doesn't mind not drinking all eve & he'll drive us there.

The other places look well worth a visit too; I might have to work my way through them! :P

Well we went to the Strines on Friday night and it was absolutely lovely!
It makes such a wonderful difference to go somewhere where you actually feel welcome with your dog! The bar staff were very welcoming, and Gadget was SO excited all night; the peacocks, the sheep, the fields were just too much to cope with!
We sat outside in the play area so he could just potter about as he wanted, and had our meal and a walk. When it got darker we went inside and it was so nice to be able to go in with Gadget!

I definitely want to work my way through ALL the other suggested places now...

We went to the Sportsman In on Redmires Lane with Gadget on Sunday, eagerly anticipating a carvery lunch but they'd already sold out! :(
By then it was 3:30pm on a rainy sunday & we were regretting our 'nice idea' to go out for lunch with Gadget, as we were worried nowhere else around there would let us in with the dog and serve food...
It turned out to be a blessing in disguise though cos further along that road was "The three merry men" who let us in with Gadget, and the food was absolutely fantastic!
We had an antipasto sharing platter between 4 of us... parma ham, salami, sundried tomatoes, feta, olives, rustic bread... mmm!
Then we all plumped for traditional main courses; chicken & ham pie, sausages & mash (with would put 'The Mash House' in town to shame!), gammon, egg & chipps. All dishes were delicious, generous, and home made. Didn't look at puddings as we were stuffed by then!
I was extremely impressed and very pleased we found that place.

PS even though they let Gadget in, I wouldn't actually call it a 'doggy pub' though - the manager said he could come in if he was well behaved as they weren't that busy...

Strix
28-10-2006, 01:38 PM
That's odd Katie - I thought they needed a different licence to have dogs on the premises

sooz22
28-10-2006, 01:42 PM
No license is neede to allow dogs onto the premises although most pubs which have a seperate restaurant area would not let the dogs into that part of the pub. Pubs which serve meals throughout tend to be fine with well-behaved dogs. Thats the rule we have here, although of course, it does vary from pub to pub.

Strix
28-10-2006, 02:16 PM
So there's no reason at all to exclude dogs by law? :suspect:

If anybody dares trot that old chestnut out to me again.....

sooz22
28-10-2006, 02:36 PM
Only in the interests of H&S in a food area e.g restaurant, bar area (behind the bar) and kitchen.

Pubs which serve food throughout the premises tend to have the food they supply legally termed as 'bar snacks' rather than a 'sit down table meal' i.e restaurant meal, which would require dogs to be exempt form the restaurant area for health and safety reasons (and general good practice).

Whatever you do don't go to the castle at Bolsterstone. You will be told it is ok by the barman and served a pint then directed to the "tap room" which actually looks more like a junk room/kids play room then another man will come and tell you to drink up as you are not allowed to bring dogs in unless it is Wednesday?!:loopy:

Strix - or anyone else - could you recommend me somewhere to go tomorrow? :)

Matt & I have the day off work for my Birthday and were looking for somewhere new to go for a nice walk with Gadget followed by a lovely pub lunch. Matt can drive us so we could venture slightly out of Sheffield.

We specifically prefer walks where we can let Gadget offlead for a proper run about - ie woods with streams etc are much better than endless countryside fields with sheep in and walking along roads! 1-2hrs walk would be perfect.

Food-wise; it would be lovely if we could find somewhere with food on a par with the Cricket Inn at Totley - I think tomorrow will be quite hot so would like to be able to choose something lighter than traditional roast!

Am I asking too much??! :P

you could try a tramp round Edale (if you're fit enough!) and have lunch at the Ramblers or the Nags Head afterwards. Not quite up to the Cricket's standards, but good pub grub

DON'T ADD IT TO YOUR LIST!

We drove all the way out there (half an hour each way) to find that not only would they not allow us inside with Gadget, but they did not even allow dogs in the beer garden!!
They said we could stand out the front with a drink - there's no pavement! So basically "go stand in the road"! :loopy: :(
So we went for a walk then drove back to the Cricket Inn!!

24-07-2008, 05:10 PM
Well I tried to go to Aunt Sally's on my way home from my walk, they said they don't mind dogs outside but they would not let me order any food unless I had a table number, I explained I was on my own and could they just make a number up as I could'nt sit at a table and be inside ordering food/drink at the same time (I refuse to leave the dog tied up at a table, he stays in the car until I've got a drink and ordered) They refused so I went to the Robin Hood at Millhouses instead. They were fine :)

I'm normally not on my own so don't have these problems, I often will not buy stuff and walk out if the queue moves too slowly in a shop or the service is rubbish, I think I may becoming a stroppy cow!
