I found a worm in my cat Mays poo (the stray cat i took in) I wormed her when i took her in 4 weeks ago with proper worming panacur stuff - not supermarket stuff and have just done it again. None of my other cats have worms and they all are wormed regularly.

Am I doing something wrong? she has not been out since i took her in but had been living rough before that - but i thought a single dose or worm treatment would have sorted this?

A single dose of any treatment wouldn't be guaranteed to do the job in a known infestation, such as a cat that's been living rough and has had fleas.

There's a link between fleas and worms BTW- if May has had fleas in the mean time then she will have been reinfected.

Panacur is usually only used in kittens because it's a lot gentler than Drontal (and you can calculate the amount given by their body weight) but it's not effective against all sorts of worms and in an adult with known worm I'd go straight for one Drontal pill, repeated 3 weeks later to be sure.

You can now buy Drontal from lots of online vet med suppliers so you don't have to go through the whole taking her to the vets and paying for a consultation routine, and as long as she doesn't weigh more than 4kg one pill will do the job against both tapeworm and roundworm.

And wear gauntlets! Cats hate tablets! My housemates cat wouldn't take them any other way but she wouldn't do it herself so I got the fantastic oportunity to be the cats scratch post instead!

Nah- there's just a knack to giving cats pills. I used to give my Merlin 4 pills every day and she never had a problem. I can even get pills down my little feral girl Baby.

Approaching pill giving with nerves is one way of making sure that the cat panics and scratches you.

Believe me I've medicated huge GSDs so nevres don't come into it! Ha ha ha! I would however rather chew my own arm off than ever have to medicate a cat again! :hihi:

Agree- we manage to worm all but one of ours without problems and for Aero (who for a tiny cat can give out a lot of grief at the sign of a tablet) we coat the tabs in margarine and try the swift approach - any sign of hesitation and she refuses to swallow. She hates the Drontal so we give her Panacur. Would recomend Drontal normally and get it online as sugested- Ive posted links to Vet-Medic and Canine Chemists/ Hyperdrug.com plenty of times if you want to do a search.
