We've recently noticed a little black stray cat, well i'm saying stray i presume it is! It was sat on my garden and looked sooo skinny and sad! I put it some food down and it ate the lot up! Only looks about 6 month's at that! What should i do? It makes me so sad to see animals in this way!

it's not my cat, is it? if it is, she may be unfeasibly skinny, but she eats like a horse and is not to be trusted.

sometimes it can be hard to tell whether a cat is stray. by all means feed it as much as it needs, but don't try to adopt it too quickly - if it likes you, it'll adopt you anyway. if you offer it a reliable source of food, if it's genuinely hungry, it'll keep coming back.

I'm in S5 area round bellhouse rd! It was kind of friendly once it knew i wasn't going to hurt it and ate all the food while i was stood at the side of it! Looks like it has had a collar on but only looks really young! It's black with lovely green eye's! Wonder if it is lost? Was thinking of taking it to Jackie Longley but didn't know if she'd take it in? Or if it's my place to take it?!

I think that you'll find that all of the shelters are packed to the rafters at the moment (it's kitten season you see) but please give the Sheffield Cats Shelter a call to get this little one on their lost and found register and also to get them on their books waiting for a place to come in to them. They'll give you other numbers to call when looking for a shelter space and some advice on how to determine whether the cat is actually a stray/lost rather than just visiting from somewhere.

Wherever you find a spot you'll probably have to wait anything from a few days to a few weeks since as a non-emergency case (not injured or with kittens) so I hope you can keep an eye on this little one for a short while.

The Cat Shelter details are in my signature- they try to answer all calls between 1.30 and 4.00 daily.

I can't really speak for Jackie but i do know she has a lot of cats in at the moment, and really she takes cats that are cruelty cases, but you can always ask her...but i wouldn't just turn up with the cat.
Have you thought of putting a collar on the cat and a little note to see if she belongs to someone? might be worth a try.

My cat Ninja, who we have had for a fair few months now, used to hang around my house. What I did was put a collar with a little engraved tag saying "please ring and put my number" This was to see if it was stray, or had an owner. Anyway, he had an owner, she rang me and explained he is her cat.

Well he carried on hanging around, he became best buds with my cat Harley, I started falling in love with him, and in the end his previous owner asked if we'd like to adopt him, as he was round ours 99% of the time. He used to sneak in and I'd find him asleep in a corner somewhere. So he is officially ours now.

I suggest maybe putting a collar the cat in question, and put your number on it, just to see if anyone rings. If no-one does he is probably stray, or very lost. Then decide whether you keep him, or take him to a shelter. You may find he is just like my Ninja, has an actual home, but makes out he is a stray so you feed him. :)
