View Full Version : Playing American Football In Sheffield
Is there anybody in Sheffield or surrounding district that would be interested in starting a senior american football team from the city. We used to have ateam throughout the eighties and then it die away, there are teams from Leeds (yorkshire rams) Doncaster (Mustangs) and Hull (hornets) as the foruth largest city and the home of the British version of the superbowl (Brit Bowl) at Don Valley we should be putting a team out, Anybody out there that would fancy playing, coaching or helping out we need to see the reaction on here etc about this before we can get the ball rolling. :)
battouchan 31-05-2007, 12:52 Now this is a great idea :)
Id definatly be up for getting involved in something like this. I've never played it before but i do know a little about it (as one of my friends is a massive dolphins fan)
Cheers
Tell your mates and anybody you know lets see what we can get going, tell your friend he's in great company Dolphins all the way here fella, ive already booked the tickets to watch them at wembley OCT 26th against the New York Giants,
Getting strarted will not be easy we have to get a fairly big squad together (30+)but I know the two unis both have teams and it may be that in the summer months when those teams are not playing but students stay in the city we can get something going.
Cheers
Slightly off-topic, has anyone been watching "Friday Night Lights" on ITV4? Excellent stuff in my opinion. I recently bought the book which the film and later the series was based on. Surprised to read the book was published in 1990. (It is about a High School American Football team for anyone who has not seen the series).
honestjoe69 01-06-2007, 07:51 I have a friend who knows very little about the sport but has always said he would love to have a go at playing. If you manage to get anything going please let me know and I'll pass your contact details on.
battouchan 04-06-2007, 14:06 Cheers sccman, Ill spread the word to my friends, I’m sure some of them would be interested in playing, if not at least helping out.
Incidentally, did you see the Dolphins cheerleaders when they came to Bar One at Sheffield Uni for a NFL/Coors promotional night? It was a great night
Code13 - Ill check out that 'Friday Night Lights', it looks quite good.
Yes i did we had a great time they are more stunning up close then there are from a distance. I had to rush off to a introduction to American Football at another venue, I will try and arrange some sort of open day, introduction day in a Sheffield Park etc once we can get enough interest, if your mates are at any of the two unis tell them to get in touch with there respective teams, Warriors at Hallam and Sabres at Uni as they both have great set ups and coaches etc.
oops missed the last post
If there was to be a new Sheffield Senior American football team, what would you call it, sensible answers please, should be something that reflects Sheffeild history, Sheffield Steelers is out as already used etc but something on that lines.

Perhaps something connected to steel or cutlery such as Crucible Crusaders? Sheffield Grinders? (as used in cutlery manufacturing)? Steel City Razors?
Do agree Copenhagen, it should be related to the Steel industry and the Cities heritage, what about Sheffileld/or Steel City Vulcans (God of Steel and fire) I like Steel City Razors, Sheffield Dons (after the river) Sheffield Ironmen, Steel City Cutlers.

Yep, count me in - would defintely be interesting in playing, let me know where & when :)
is there an age thing on this? like minimum age
I believe the age limit is over 16 may be 17 but i need to check this with the national league officials to make sure, if you are under age there is already a youth team in SHeffield called the tomahawks train near the Earl of Arundel Pub on Queens rd Sheffield
Hi to everyone who has replied to this thread just to keep people informed about what may be occuring in the future, having looked at the possibilty of running a senior side out of Sheffield I have contacted the Governeing Body and we are looking at minimum 15K to 20k to get off the ground and the Governing Body now scrutinise the applications of potential teams.
Does anybody know of any avenues of sponsorship etc to follow up, this is a big commitment and sponsors would probably not see a any results for 18 months etc as teh very earliest we could be competeing is 2009 season
I am open to any suggestions of the way forward.
I'll let my hubby know. He's played in the past and also used to be involved with the Yorkshire Rams.
Just had paperwork through from BAFL teh governing body of American Football in Britain, will be organising a meeting of interested parties in the future if anybody is interested please PM me with your contact details and i will keep in touch and let you know when the meeting is and what is expected at it etc.
