View Full Version : Getting married abroad - tips please?
Classic Rock 30-05-2007, 05:41 PM Has anyone any experience of getting married abroad?
Is it best to go through an agent to sort it all out? Are there any UK companies who do the sorting who you'd recommend?
We're thinking of Australia but don't really know where to start.:help:
Yellowrose 30-05-2007, 11:25 PM We got married in Las Vegas and did it ourselves on the spur of the moment. It wasnt difficult. Packages have lots of extras that you may not want or need, and they charge over the odds.
Start at the register office or county offices of the place you want to get married, they should give you all the info you need. We just needed to turn up at Clark County Marriage Bureau offices in Las Vegas with our passports and wait in line with everyone else. Nothing else except $55 for the licence. Once you got the licence any chapel or hotel would marry you. They didnt even want to see our divorce decree, just date of divorce when we filled in the form. We bought our clothes whilst we were there, I went to a local supermarket with a florists in and asked them to make me a small bouquet, which they did, very cheaply. It cost $14.99 and was bigger than the ones the wedding chapels charged $50-60 dollars for. Also bought the ring there, not particularly cheap, but fairly easy to find. The wedding chapel supplied a photographer with studio who took a film of 12 prints for $75 which we got developed at the drug store and then bought a souvenir album.
After the wedding we went for a fantastic gondola ride in the Venetian casino, as there is a grand canal there. The gondola serenades you for no extra cost! It was great fun. I had had a church wedding 20+ years ago and found the las vegas one much more fun.
Classic Rock 31-05-2007, 01:56 AM Hmmm, not really what I had in mind.
Admittedly some of the packages I've seen online do include things which we wouldn't want. Ideally we'd be after a wedding planner which we could pass it all to, ideally based in Australia, who could co-ordinate it all for us and could come up with suggestions and ideas - not a ready made check list.
I'd rather have photos and flowers done more formally I think.
Did you really buy your rings from a supermarket??? :o
skala 31-05-2007, 08:05 PM We got married in the Dominican Republic and booked wih thomas cook, all sorted brilliantly no stress at all only had to get our outfits and rings and thats it! Only stressful bit was getting our marriage certificate translated back into english as they speak spanish in the Dominican! But all in all was brill, wanna do it all over again!
Yellowrose 31-05-2007, 10:13 PM No I bought my ring out there i.e. in Las Vegas but in a Jewellers!
But having a wedding co-ordinator is a serious waste of money. Its not difficult to do yourself.
HornDog 08-06-2007, 09:35 PM I have just returned from a package deal with T Cook In Cuba, Cayo Guellermo.
We went as a party of 8 so got the Basic hotel package free but had to pay extra a photographer, videographer, horse and cart and also for a live salsa band to play at the ceromoney which cost an extra £300 in total.
We decided to Marry abroad with as little fuss as possible so had a wedding planner arrange all the details for us, a 1 hour meeting with her to arrange times etc and all we had to do was show up at the right time and place.
We got exactly what we wanted, and what we expected.
We looked at a lot of diferent holiday companies for the wedding package and if I rember corectly "Kuoni" had Australia, Fiji etc in their wedding brochure with pre arranged packages.
Hope this Helps
Classic Rock 15-06-2007, 11:57 AM It doesnt HAVE to be Australia, any ideas of inspiration welcome.
TravelAgent 15-06-2007, 11:36 PM Hi Buffy,
How about http://www.spbthailand.com/chapel.html
or still in Oz http://www.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/royal_botanic_gardens/venue_hire
I have lots of ideas on this - need to know what YOU want!
Hopefully catch up with you at the Tarana gig at the Moorfoot tomorrow,
Sarah x
Classic Rock 19-06-2007, 01:55 PM Thanks! (Now I know what you meant by putting a post on the Forum!).
Some interesting ideas here.
Any more from anyone else?
Classic Rock 26-06-2007, 11:45 PM We've now decided to go to Hawaii instead of Australia. Any experiences folks?
flufftier 29-06-2007, 12:21 PM We're getting married in Las Vegas next year and I was wondering what you have to do to make sure it's all legal when you get back to the UK. I've heard you ahve to send you marraige certificate off somewhere but don't know any details...
Classic Rock 02-07-2007, 02:33 PM I think you just need to inform the registry office at the Town Hall.
Rachael27 11-07-2007, 06:08 PM We are looking at getting married in Sri Lanka next year. Possibly going with first choice. Should hopefully cost us about £2,100 and no hassle like there would be at home.
honeyb35 11-07-2007, 09:53 PM my sons physio got married in las vegas on a motorbike apparently! how cool! lol
Classic Rock 12-07-2007, 09:54 AM Having researched this a fair bit, it seems that it may work out cheaper to book the hotel and flight and then book the photographer and person who will be doing the marriage separately. Then you also don't get a McWedding and get just what you want. Most package weddings seem to automatically come with engraved champagne glasses which you pay for as part of the deal. It's not really what we want.
squeakyclean 14-07-2007, 01:51 PM We didn't have to register our wedding over here at all,as it depends on the country you get married in.We got married in the USA.
Classic Rock 16-07-2007, 10:40 AM So how does this country get to find out if you're married? I'd have thought you'd have to show your certificate to the registry office.
digimissus 17-07-2007, 12:01 AM :love:We were going to get married in Greece. (Lindos on Rhodes-the best place on earth!) but decided that many people could not afford to come, and did we really want friends and family on the honeymoon!
As far as I know all of the legal paperwork needs sorting out in old Blighty-reading of the banns / proving that you are both elligable for marriage / that you actually know each other etc! needs to be sorted at the registry office/ town hall.
When we looked into it, it became apparent that it was FAR cheaper, and more tasteful to book things seperately but you probably need some local knowledge or contacts. But,..... having our wedding in this country last year was far more expensive than any wedding package deal!
Anyway, good luck- hope it's the right thing for you. (let us know where you decide to go.)
Classic Rock 01-08-2007, 10:15 AM Well, it's booked. We're off to Hawaii in May next year. After a fair amount of trawling of wedding co-ordinators we've found a professional photographer who can also do all the arrangements. It's fairly inexpensive to actually have the wedding, the main costs of course are the flight and accommodation, but we'd spend that on a honeymoon anyway.
We'll have a small group coming with us, but that's how I want it. Being in the public eye as a DJ all the time, there would be far too many people who'd expect to be invited and it would just get silly and stressful. I dread to imagine the wedding reception/disco - aaarrghh! I love to DJ them, but don't want one myself - I'd be forever checking the DJ, adjusting levels and it would be a busman's holiday for me! Getting away from it all will make it far more special.
I understand that a Hawaii wedding, with it being a US wedding, is legal all over the world. I still am not sure if it needs recording in the UK or if they do it for us. Anyone know?
squeakyclean 03-08-2007, 07:00 PM As I said above, you won't need to register your wedding here, your wedding certificate will be valid. for name changing etc. Do obtain some copies though.
anniec 03-08-2007, 07:28 PM We got married in the Domincan Republic last year through First Choice and it was a total disaster.
First Choice totally ruined the wedding (I'm not going to get into it all again) it was so horrifc that we ended up getting more than half our money back as compensation.
Domincan is lovely but it's a nightmare legally. You need to have a declaration of status done for both people, need birth certs and you need to have them legalised by the britsh consulate, then translated into spanish then legallised by the domincan consulate. Then when your married it takes approx 3-6 months for the marriage cert to come through and then that needs to be translated to! We had to send ours back as my oh's date of birth was wrong lol
Anything that could go wrong did. We love being married though but I'd love to do it all again and have it special!
Classic Rock 07-08-2007, 02:48 PM Now that's worrying. At least in Hawaii it is fairly straight forward. Are there any warnings you'd give, things to be extra aware of and check on?

We got married in the Dominican and had to go through all that too, i didn't think it was that bad! We had to send our certificate back because at the bottom they had written that they had married my hubby to his MUM lol!!!!!! They changed it and sent it back straight away but we did it through Thomas Cook and they were brilliant!
affdahuk 12-08-2007, 11:49 PM i went with my fiancee and our children to the dom rep last yr. on the same plane as us were a party of about 30 people who were flying out for a wedding. when we arriaved they turned out to be in our hotel...the problems they had were terrible to say they had booked everything through a travel agents and were supposed to have a stress free day!! everything that could have gon wrong for them did..then to top it off when they finaly got a day booked that the registrar could come they decided to use a SMALL peice of grass bang behind the swiming pool for the ceromany. it was a big all inc complex so as you can imajine people wr running in and out the pool in there trunks and bikinis!!!
me and my fiance are getting married 4th june 08 in cyprus. we went out for a week holiday over easter this yr.we booked meetings with wedding co-ordinators from both sides of the island, hired a car and traveled round. it was lovely to be met and shown round and given options as to where we could have our special day. it was all free of charge for the co-ordinators to do and it have us a real chance to see first hand where our money would be going. i strongly recomend this. of course we have to pay for our holiday over there but that was it.
we came back to england with all the relevant info , sat down and decided where to have our day. you see this way you can go woth all your questions, ask prices ect, see all the hotels , churches and registary venues for yourself. its all part off it and we enjoyed the trip loads. there will be 64 adults and 35 children coming with us next year and all we did was collect relevent info and put it together in a pack we sent out with the invites and people can book there own holidays. good luck with whatever you decide to do. pm me if you would like to no more
skala 14-08-2007, 10:23 PM We had a meeting with our wedding co ordinator when we arrived in the dominican, everything went perfect. They showed us where we would be geting married, showed us behind the scenes in the hotel, where our flowers were being prepared and everything!! It all went very smoothly, so much so i wanted to do it all again! We went to the Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus, apperently the director of Thomas Cook holidays there so thats why we chose it!!
Classic Rock 18-08-2007, 07:46 PM Well we have a confirmation through from the Hawaiian wedding co-ordinator, we've to meet him 4 days before the wedding at his office to discuss the details and probably get the certificate sorted out. He has also offered to answer any emails/questions we have and has sent pics of places to do the deed. All sounds good so far.
missyowl 22-08-2007, 12:35 PM Im getting married in november in turks @ caicos, booked it through going places, only problem we have had so far is all the bloody legal papers needed to be stamped and signed by a notary of the public took us a few attempts to get all the paper work right, but we got there in the end,we meet with our wedding wedding co-ordinator the day after we arrive, and get married 6 days after we have arrived.
Ewdenstar 11-09-2007, 08:58 AM Good luck with the wedding - great news for you that you have sorted it so soon. I got married three weeks ago in Bradfield and it chucked it down on the big day but we still had an absolute ball! At least where you are going you have much better odds of not getting rained on!

It even raining on our wedding day, so everything that could go wrong really did! However a really nice Canadian couple told me that it's actually good luck for it to rain on your wedding day as it had rained on theirs and they'd been married 44years! He said it's a common thought in Canada.
If it's good enough for them it's good enough for me!
quotealimo 17-09-2007, 01:42 AM Got married in St Lucia. Absolutely nothing like it in the world. They really look after you, treat you like you would want to be treated and more!
They really know how to throw a wedding too. Well worth it. Worked out much cheaper than getting married in the Uk too!
Classic Rock 22-11-2007, 10:53 AM Getting married on a beach in a tropical climate sounds great, but practically I don't want a heavy dress which I will slowly cook in.
I'm after something lightweight - the dresses in the shops all are big heavy multi layered ornate frocks!
Do I really have to order something sight unseen and tailor made from China on ebay or does such a thing exist in this country?
redhotjo 22-11-2007, 02:19 PM Monsoon do a nice range of dresses that probably suit a beach wedding
lola2 23-11-2007, 08:14 AM hi
don't know what you want to spend their dresses are pretty pricey but avorio in west one (£1000 to £3000 i think) sells jenny packham she has some dresses which might suit the beach. have a look here www.jennypackhambride.com i'm getting my dress from their and they aren't too heavy at all the ones on the website are the new collection and the shop is still selling the old collection but they are all similar. Marks and Spencer also have some nice dresses. Good luck i hope you find one.
lola2 23-11-2007, 08:16 AM sorry it wouldn't let me put in a link for some reason
Sarah1982 26-12-2007, 05:16 PM Im getting married sometime in 2009 and considering vegas.
Has anyone here been married in Vegas before? or been to a vegas wedding.
Any hints or tips would be appreciated,x
JarvisCocker 02-01-2008, 04:18 PM Yes me!!!! Last year on 23rd September 07. It was at the Gracelands Wedding Chapel, Elvis walked me down the isle while singing 'Can't help falling in love with you', it was fun and fabulous and certainly a day to remember.
We didn't decide to get married until the morning of the day, we were on holiday there anyway. There was only us two and two friends of ours at our wedding, but we did have a DVD done so we could show our friends and family when we got home. And then we had a big party when we got back. It was such good fun and we haven't had the honeymoon yet, thats happening in Feb!
The only thing you have to do in advance is get your marriage license. You can do this once you are there, the office is open very long hours every day. You just need your passport, and you fill in a simple form there and then. It's all very easy.
A Vegas wedding can be as simple and quick or as big and bold as you like, but whatever you do I'm sure you'll love it. We had the most amazing day and I didn't come down for weeks afterwards.
Good luck with what ever you decide!
Sarah1982 03-01-2008, 10:32 PM Thanks for the reply...

Great stuff I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time. Go and see the Beatles "LOVE" show by Circ de Soleil while you are there, you'll need to book tickets before you go to get good seats. But it is amazing, the best show I have EVER seen. I'm sure it's why we ended up getting married, made us feel all warm and fluffy after we'd seen it!!
Good luck with the wedding too!

Tanya T 1 08-01-2008, 11:35 AM My brother got married in Las Vegas in 2004, he got married and we stayed in the MGM. He got married at the Forever Grand Wedding Chapel. Then we had a 4 course meal at the Monte Carlo Hotel. It was fantastic!
mikey10 08-01-2008, 11:19 PM Oh well I've taken the plunge, only getting married in the spring!
Has anyone got wed abroad, if so how much does it cost? We're just planning on us two and a witness, so it will be no big deal, and fairly inexpensive, we hope!!
mikey10 08-01-2008, 11:21 PM mods please edit i meant foreign wedding
I don't have any suggestions/answers Mikey (I think it depends on what 'package' your choose etc etc) but I've moved your thread (as well as editting the title) as I think the Wedding Group might come up with the best answers to your question :)

lowby 09-01-2008, 08:52 AM we looked at jamaica, florida and canada. there was 3 adults and 3 kids and it was expensive. your best bet would be going to the travel agents as different destinations have different rules. or try the kuoni website.
Classic Rock 09-01-2008, 10:19 AM I'm getting married in Hawaii in the Spring.
We've booked just like a normal holiday and have found a wedding co-ordinator over there who will sort out the licence and the person to run through the vows and the photography AND anything else we need. They're not charging that much for the arrangements.
If you do it through a company (I've seen ALL the brochures) then it proves to be more expensive than finding a co-ordinator to sort it who lives in the country. Just Google 'wedding co-ordinator' and the country you want to do it in and take it from there.
Different countries have different rules regarding the licence. One country we looked at, I forget which, insisted that you had to buy about £200 in postage stamps along with the licence!!
Speed Dates 20-01-2008, 08:05 PM Has anyone got any suggestions on a beach wedding (not in the carribean) or just a wedding abroad with a difference?
Classic Rock 21-01-2008, 11:33 AM We're getting married in Hawaii in May this year. So excited! We've hired a wedding co-ordinator/photographer who'll sort out all the arrangements for us when we get there. All we need to do is turn up at his office. We've booked flights, hotels and hire cars through an agent and the co-ordinator will sort the rest. The plan is to marry on the beach, have photos taken and then be taken by a limo to a boat for a sunset cruise and have a gourmet chef cook for us on the boat.
Speed Dates 21-01-2008, 01:13 PM That sounds fantastic! What are you doing about guests? We are having a real dilemma about that. Sounds selfish but we'd like to do it on our own and then come home and have a party. Has it took you long to organise? Ideally we'd like to do something this summer.
Classic Rock 21-01-2008, 10:56 PM I've simply told people that if they want to come they are very welcome but they have to pay for themselves to get there and stay there.
Because I'm a DJ and I have so many years serviced doing weddings, I just wanted to do something totally different. Additionally because I'm in the public eye a lot as a DJ I wanted to escape from it and we both agreed to get away from it all and keep it low key. I imagine we'll arrange something when we get back - not planned that yet.
We got engaged in May last year and agreed to stay engaged for a year. We settled on Hawaii in June/July and booked it and the co-ordinator then. We've not started planning anything much yet, simply because there is so little to do now. We get there, meet the man who sorts it all out, go through the options with him and kaboom, it's done and all we do is go through the motions on the day.
I need to lose weight (as all brides do), buy a dress and shoes and pack my suitcase.
We'll need to get rings too. My fiancee is hiring a tuxedo over there. I was gonna hire a dress, but it'll be sods law that nothing will fit and I'll look like a snowball in whatever they have.
It works out a lot cheaper than paying for a British wedding plus then paying for a honeymoon. Instead it's a memorable place, great photography and will be fun. It's not selfish. It's your day after all. You do what you want, not what your family want! And when you come back and want a party, let me know when it is and I'll DJ for you :)
SMoorhouse 23-01-2008, 11:46 AM We have decided to get married on a cruise ship only a few of the companies do this though. We are going through P&O, so we get a great holiday and a wedding. We wanted to do a cruise for the honeymoon anyway.
We've told people that if they want to come then they are more than welcome to come but they have to pay for themselves. Lots of people told us just to get away (especially with having a complicated family) and make sure the day is for us and not for everyone else
weenireeni 23-01-2008, 11:56 AM This sounds lovely, I'd love to get away if I ever get married! My only niggle would be the cost, is it really that much cheaper? I'd want to pay for my Mum to come too, I know she wouldnt afford it otherwise!
*sigh* wish i was getting married lol!
Speed Dates 27-01-2008, 05:31 PM Zanzibar - I have seen it in a brochure and it looks fantastic! I'm going to look into and see what the prices are like. Has anyone been?
Classic Rock 28-01-2008, 04:14 PM I've just found out I'm getting married on the beach where Lost was filmed!!!
Speed Dates 06-02-2008, 09:52 PM Hello
The other half and I seem to be going around in circles at the moment. We want to get married abroad, preferably on the beach (somewhere like The Seychelles) but we would like to talk to someone before we just go ahead and book a wedding in the Seychelles.
Does anyone know of a wedding co-ordinator who specialises in weddings abroad?
Classic Rock 07-02-2008, 03:29 PM I'm getting married in Hawaii and found a co-ordinator that lives on the island. They know the local way of life and have advised me which documents I need and what to bring. Local knowledge is far better in my book.

DiamondGirl 22-03-2008, 09:41 PM HI.
I bought my dress today from Debenhams. It is a wedding dress but not too thick. I just need it altering and dry cleaning as cos its been tried on the bottom is a bit grubby (got 20% off which is good)

Zarch 27-03-2008, 01:14 PM As nice as the whole sun-kissed beach wedding sounds i don't fancy sweating like the proverbial all day..... and i know our lass is the same.
Are there other locations to consider?
I saw a programme on telly about some "ice hotel" on swedish frozen lakes. Not sure i want to go that far, but its a start.
What about the likes of Italy and the rest of europe?
i think the plan would be immediate family and friends over there and then big do when we get back.
Any thoughts, pointers, websites or tips would be very much appreciated.
emharrison 27-03-2008, 01:52 PM any part of italy is lovely, you could try the lakes though, try a google search on getting married in italy..
Croatia is also very very pretty and has very italian like themes due to its close proximity but without the massive price tag. northern croatia more than southern and you will find roman ruins and lovely towns and beautiful scenery.
you could even try greek islands in october when the weather drops.
or.... how about the british coast??, or the isle of scilly, cornwall etc. you would also be amazed by scotland, you cant get much more breathtaking than the scenery there, i know it doesnt sound as amazing as an ice hotel, but some of the castles overlooking one of the lochs are fantastic. I am getting married in scotland in june, in a marquee next to a beach, and was at first dubious but the sunsets are amazing... www.hawthorn-house.co.uk, this is where my parents are, hence the wedding there but the links might help.
medusa 27-03-2008, 01:54 PM The Canadian Rockies in winter- very very beautiful. That's what we did, although you may not want to have thermals on for your honeymoon.
Zarch 27-03-2008, 01:55 PM Yeah, just found a site about Italy, the lakes look amazing.
Not thought of Scotland, but now you mention it i'll take a look, thanks for the links. She is originally from that side of the border and still has some family up there so it might be just what we are after. i can't believe i never thought of it.
anyway, i hope she doesn't come on here..... cos i've not even asked her the big question yet!! LOL.
Classic Rock 27-03-2008, 02:16 PM It depends on when you go. I'm getting married at the end of May this year in Hawaii. The temperature is going to be about 22 degrees, which is just pleasant, T shirt weather. If there's a beach you do fancy getting married on, then pick the time of year when it's going to be less hot and sweaty and go for it!
uniquelydun 11-05-2008, 10:17 PM are you or do you know of anyone getting married at the nissi beach hotel in cyprus? or have you been married there before and could advise on there service.
princessL 11-05-2008, 10:20 PM im not getting married there but oh my god - i LOVE nissi beach and if had decided to get married I would def got married at Adams Beach Hotel. The hotel is beautiful and the bestest hotel Ive stayed at at nissi.
uniquelydun 13-05-2008, 02:46 PM i actually mean the nissi neach hotel in nissi bay. i am getting married there in a few weeks and have been informed that there will be another wedding there from sheffield.
uniquelydun 02-07-2008, 11:48 AM we came back from our holiday to cyprus 3 weeks ago. we took 90 people with us and had the best time ever. the weather was great and the wedding day was amazing. we traveled over to cyprus the year b4 to meet co-ordinators and decide exactly where we wanted our day. we planned it all ourselves and managed to pull off 8 bridesmaids 5 pageboys and 6 ushers in with our party and to see them all dresses and there on the day was an achievement in itself. i just want to do it again.
here are a few pics. anyone wanting any advice regarding wedding planning abroad or tips on what we did please feel free to get in touch.
hope all of your days are as perfect as ours was.
uniquelydun 02-07-2008, 02:17 PM ups sorry guys forgot to send link

sarah99 07-07-2008, 08:24 PM We are wanting to marry in Italy, I have only just started looking and there seems to be a million sites and companies, it's a little overwhelming! Does anyone know anybody who has got married in Italy and can recommend a company or location. I would much rather go on personal recommendation if possible. Also does anyone know how early we need to book. It has to be an August wedding so I am thinking 2010 (enough time for the poor old guests to save up!) Any help really appreciated!

Needham 04-09-2008, 11:47 AM Hi me and my partner want to go to Las Vegas to get married, trouble is selecting the venue? We fancied the forever grand chapel at the MGM Grand or the little church of the west.
Does anyone have any experience of these 2 or any others? x :help:
