But like most of them, they don't advertise their prices!

this is the problem, I submitted a price enquiry before and never heard the end of them! I just want to know how much it is simple as!

I pay £35-ish for an off-peak-and-late-evenings membership. I also had the joining fee waived for some reason.

Money well spent I feel as the pool is at the perfect temperature for swimming and I've always been able to use whatever equipment I want when I want. Much better than Fitness Unlimited - they chose their initials to be F U for a reason!

I pay £42 a month (I think) and I use it just about everyday....and get my free morning paper, so easily worth it for me.

My only gripe is that the pool is too warm for swimming! It's like getting into a lukewarm bath.....water should be cold, you're in it to exercise, not bathe ;)

Well I am looking to join quite soon so any information is greatly received! I have heard it is quite a fancy gym with nice facilities - do you get any other benefits like discounts? Do they provide you with shower gel etc!?

boyface
30-05-2007, 10:35
Aye, shower gel, shaving cream, hairspray, etc etc.

I'm pretty sure there's a sign outside saying if you join now you get the first 2 months free. Would seem a good time to join.

I've only been there just over a month and I think it's spot on. As for the facilities, just ring them up and go and have a look.

Are there always enough parking spaces?

Are there always enough parking spaces?

The car park is huge, I've never noticed it full.

But then I walk there as I live 2 mins away....and I go at 6:30am so it's not rammed at that time.

At peak time, I'm not sure.

Perks .. none really, Greens have lost a lot of members to virgin as its much nicer.

The showers in greens are mankey, the equipment isnt 1st rate by a long shot and the reason there are bubbles in the Jacuzzi’s isn’t due to shower gel but because they don’t clean them very often :gag:

boyface
30-05-2007, 15:28
I must have low standards then because I go to the gym just for a shower because it's nicer than mine at home :P

Never been in Virgin, so I can't compare.

boyface
30-05-2007, 15:29
...and er, the bubbles are because of the pumps.

That's kinda how a Jacuzzi works.

Berberis

Look at the three and say they all have the same amount. No because they don’t clean them all at the same time.

The bubbles floating around, or a better description, the foam is caused by the scum in the water from people walking from the sauna and getting into the water. An employee there is where this info comes from.

I was a member of Greens and I know people who have left to join Virgin. All say it’s much nicer there.

I think Greens and Virgin are much the same, the thinks to look for in a gym are:

Are children allowed in the gym, what time is the pool open for children, is there a creche (more from the point of avoiding other peoples when you want to exercise)
What sort of contract do they offer, virgin offer a monthly contract and a cheaper yearly one.
Class timetable (you can see them on there website) Gives and indication of how many and what is available at the time you like to go
What the joining free? Personally I would hold out for a promotion, they usually offer them in summer as Jan Feb is the busy time.

i have been a greens member for a couple of months and love it, as its member exclusive it's never over crowded even at peak times, and the biggest perk for me is even on a boiling hot sunday there were no kids at the pool HEAVEN!

the facilities are brilliant, ive never cueued for a machine, they have awesome showers in private cubicles, shower gel, hairdryers, soon to get straighteners, hundreds of classes.

i love it

the have different plans, and we paid 25 for our joining fee (plus an upfront amount for the rest of the month cos we had missed the DD deadline) it was £34 off-peak and £42 peak i sometimes go just to use the sauna and showers cos its so nice in there well worth the money 'cos there hardly any kids and barely any meatheads.

You pay £42 just to use the shower and sauna! How on earth do people afford to do that!

not just to do that i swim 5 times a week and cardio 3 and use weights 2 plus personal training sessions, at that price it was cheaper than just going swimming twice a week and i can walk to it.

has anyone got a up-to-date price on the peak membership?

Some of my class members have been members of Greens in the past and it sounds like anything from £40 - £52 per month.

Think its cheaper if you take on a longer contract, most gyms offer cheaper packages if you sign up for a longer period

my husband has just cancelled as his fee is £54 per month! He's joined Zest at Upperthorpe which may not be as smart but has excellent equiment, a pool and classes - all for £18 per month!

Don't want to comes across like I am slagging Green's off but their clientele & standards dropped. They are no way as goodd as they used to be. *jeeper creepers* £54 per month! Saying that I was paying something like £42-46 when I was there. They changed their staff as quick as I changed my undies!

Another vote for virgin here, was a member of greens last year and as said previously the standards have declined drastically.

I pay £45 (direct debit) a month off peak (ie not after 5 pm), It is cheaper if you lock into an annual contract.(I think anytime use is about a tenner more). I was told when I joined that they wil not negotiate on the plan price but you can usually haggle on the joining fee (try trading it off against the cost of the fob for unlocking the lockers)
Like all gyms - it is expensive if you pay and then don't go
As to cleanliness, its not bad and has improved as the showers have just been re-grouted.
As to the scum in the Jacuzzi - I am told that this is due to ladies of a certain age that attend aquarobics (scientific proof that fat and water don't mix) Some feel that their attendance at the class would be incomplete without plenty of make up, later it comes off in the warmer water of the jacuzzi. However the water is regularly changed - I have never felt that I was going to catch anything from it

im a member of greens , ended up paying 38 pounds a months for full membership, girlfriend joined day after and payed 39 for off peak... do they just make there prices up depending on there mood that day as my friends asked for a price today and got quoted 56? why do the prices vary so much for the same thing?

I know what you mean about prices at Greens...just gone up (again) and now, even for a 12-month membership it's £52 per month!

Not sure what competitors' prices are in 2011 eg Virgin...as usual not easy to find out without have the obligatory tour...

Typically before you get a quote, many gyms normally 'pre-qualify' you, asking questions about your lifestyle, health, goals, existing fitness levels etc. They use this info to calculate the type of customer you'll be, and you'll be 'categorised'. Each category will receive a different price.

For example, someone who is clearly a '6 week wonder' will most likely get a large signing on fee, but a low monthly fee, on the assumption that after six weeks they'll barely come in, but the low monthly fee makes it less likely for them to cancel, so instead they'll keep on paying while convincing themselves that they'll soon pick things up again. Most don't though!

This is normally why many gyms ask you to come down for a tour with one of the 'health advisers', it's during that tour that you are assessed and categorised.

It's no different to many other businesses - anyone ever tried to get a Yellow Pages ad? Ring them up, and they won't give you a price - you have to meet with a sales advisor, go through surveys and assessments, and then they make up the highest price they feel they can get away with.
