View Full Version : Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
ReCycler 28-05-2007, 21:46 Got to say I am a fan of the Pirate films but quite disappointed with this one. Went to see it today with the kids and it was far too long..... boring in many places. It did have the odd bit that made me chuckle and even though I   Johnny Depp, he's too camp (again)... even my mum who is a huge fan was disappointed.
Can't knock the special effects though, absolutely superb! And I love Bill Nighy as Davy Jones. Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa is great but I felt he was in this movie far too much..... my husband, (who loves watching all genres of film) like me was  with the story line (at times).... if I'd watched it in the evening I would have fallen asleep.
The monkey deserves an oscar for it's performance :hihi: especially the part where it shiver's covered in frost as they sail through the icy cold water's.
Sorry if I've put you off.... but I'm sure they could have cut some parts out and managed it all in half the time.
Beakerzoid 29-05-2007, 01:51 I really enjoyed it, after the first 40 mins. It wasn't that the first 40 mins were bad, it was just that it has been a year since I watched part 2 and I'd forgotten most of what had happened, so was struggling to catch up.
Once I settled into it I loved every damned minute of it, and found the time flew by. The cameo by Keith Richards as Captain Teague was done well, and had me chuckling.
A great finish to the trilogy (although I sense a whiff of another film on the horizon).
BTW: Yes, there is a bit at the end of the longest-end-credits-since-part-two, and no it really isn't worth sticking around for!
I thought it was excellent. You have to keep up with the story as there's lots of things happening but it's not difficult to understand. Just noticed the after credits bit has been removed from youtube at the request of Disney...dammit, I couldn't be bothered to stick around.
EdnaKrabappe 29-05-2007, 10:02 I was completely lost for the first hour, I'd forgotten who was who and why they were there so god knows how the kids next to me kept up.
I'd forgotten how Geoffery Rush, who was a ghost, became human again and why he stayed a goodie all the way through. (in pirate terms!)
It's definitely one to refresh your memory with the second one before viewing.
Instead of worrying about it, I watched it through the eyes of a ten year old and just enjoyed the action, the costumes and the one liners instead of trying to make sense of the plot.Oh yeah and the monkey and the parrot. :D
It got easier once they left Davy Jones locker.
Didn't stay for the bit at the end though - doh!
carcrash 29-05-2007, 10:26 Mark Kermode's review of it on Radio 5 last week was very funny.

huggybabe 29-05-2007, 11:15 i loved it as much as first one, second one i didnt like a kept falling asleep every time i watched it
pattricia 29-05-2007, 11:17 Havent seen any of them , but this last one has got bad reviews. Like the look of Johny Depp( he has nice cheeky eyes) :D
Well.. my honest opinion.. I thought it was crap!
The 2nd one and the third one have been getting steadily worse now since they came out and have ruined for me what was a brilliant first film.
I dont think its as much family orientated viewing as the first one was now as well - especially with the first 10mins in the 3rd film with the hangings.
The plot was going all over the shop in the 3rd film and it confused me a lot and frankly bored me, with what was going on in davy jones locker when Jack was on his own.

You need a direct link (http://www.bbc.co.uk/fivelive/entertainment/kermode.shtml) to that :D . Absolutely classic rant from the good doctor. More laughs to be had in that than in Johnny Depp's entire turgid back catalogue.
carcrash 29-05-2007, 11:30 Cheers, just got up and my brain isn't working, I like Johnny Depp as an actor but POTC isn't very good
MuteWitness 29-05-2007, 11:45 I found the film visually very good but didn't understand the plot at all
I thought it was a great film, was a bit confusing for a while but once you worked it out it was good. Johnny depp doing the camp thing is what makes the films i think, i think he plays it really well, plus he,s gorgeous to boot. But well done the monkey, what a star :hihi:
emma2686 29-05-2007, 15:57 yeah I found the plot a bit disjointed too, there was far too much going on (why make such a big deal out of calipso if all she's going to do is make a storm?) I loved 1 and 2 but felt this one was just trying too hard to bring everything together and failing miserably. I did love Keith Richards as Jack's dad though :hihi:
shells2909 29-05-2007, 19:00 I really enjoyed the first 2 POTC films but to be honest i was quite dissapointed with the third. It was just on way too long in my opinion. I hadnt seen the second film for ages so was a bit lost for the first hour. Orlando Blooms character really annoyed me (and i'm usually a big fan of him!)
Enjoyed the big battle scene with the Galleons at the end, and the special effects were amazing!! If it wasn't for the fact that Johnny Depp  was his usual entertaining self i think i'd have fallen asleep. Dont get me wrong i'm not saying it wasnt good - it was, was just expecting something fantastic after all the hype.
You'd be better off seeing the Chuckle Brothers in "Pirates of the River Rother" probably!
And that's saying something! That whole "To me to you" garbage got old years ago IMO!
Just seen it...suprised me by not being completely awful.
Not a patch on #1 or even #2...Whoever wrote the script should be shot (or skewered by a cutlass). The pacing and tone was all wrong, too dark and then in an attempt to lighten the mood they immediately put in a joke but because it follows the dark section it fails to lighten the mood.
Speaking as someone who likes his films dark, nasty and violent the level of bloodletting was a disgrace for a family film whenever there is an excuse for a death they waste no time in offing someone. Seriously Disney should be ashamed of themselves there is no way I would want any kids of mine to see it.
...having said that the bits with Depp in (especially the multiple personality bits) are a positive point but it comes to something when the best player in the piece is Keith Richards.
linda-mum-of 01-06-2007, 21:47 I loved it, i thought it was great best one so far. But im a depp obbseive lol
I took 18 kids (with work) and didn't see much of it due to the incessant toilet trips.
Even then, what I did see I didn't get, but then I was never in there long enough to catch the storyline and I didn't approce of the certificate.
12A wasn't right, there are some really gruesome bits which totally freaked a couple of the kids out. The bit where the rock/sea version of Sparrows personalities was meddling with his brain and then when he lost it.... not good!
The hangings were brilliant in terms of presentation but awful for kids.
Way too dark for kids, not clear enough for anyone I've met so far.... a shameful thumbs down - even with the lovely fellas they have in the line up :(
shihtzumad 03-06-2007, 00:08 my daughter is desperate to see this film, she loves all pirates of caribeen films..........glad u all enjoyed it
SimpyTimpy 03-06-2007, 04:38 My friends said the best thing about it was it gave them the oppourtunity to sleep...
Although they could have stayed at home for that ...
1st one brilliant, 2nd one crap, 3rd one better than the 2nd one but not as good as the 1st one
blondie-blue 05-06-2007, 07:57 hmmm i have to agree that it was not as good as the first 2 films and it was very slow to get started, great visual effects though and Orlando Bloom looked HOT    :D
