I used to read the book to my son, he loved it because he was a briggs fan.
He also liked the film even though it is stark and upsetting.

I have the Bowie song on mp3 to remind me of the days when I used to read the story to my lad.

It is an excellent film, and book too.

It also shows just how ineffective the actual Government information on how to protect yourself could have been.

Its a very funny and touching film/book/play. I've been lucky enough to have seen the play and film, both excellent. I also have the soundtrack around here somewhere, also very good.

Also by Briggs is the excellent 'Ethel and Ernest' which charts the relationship between Brigg's parents, from meeting to their eventual deaths.
Makes me cry like a baby.
