Why only one or the other?

Maplins do an alarm/immobiliser for about £40 if you want a cheap combined one The Toad Cat1 is good for £110 of ebay

Both DIY fit.

You can get a Cat2 Immobiliser of ebay for about £30 too. DIY fit again.

Disklok is also a worthwhile immobilser for £80

remember though that if you fit it yourself there might be a problem as insurance companies want to see a certificate issued by an accredited auto 'trician..i know mine did

I bought a shock and sensor alarm from Halfords on Friday however i had to take it back becuase it was too difficult for me to fit. Does anyone know a place in Sheffield i can take it to.

sounds about right but make sure it is thatcham 2 and you get a certificate ..your insurance company might need it

As Dave says if you are paying that much money for someone to fit it. Then make sure the immobiliser is CAT2 and they are a certified fitter so able to give you a certificate.

yeah it is a CAT 2 and they will be giving me a certificate.

Skatiechik

It would have been more cost effective to get a combined one

Technicar would have fitted an alarm and immobiliser for not much more than that. They fitted a Cat 1 Clifford alarm and imobiliser to ours for £200 and this is one of the best you can get.

Disc Locks are the best imobiliser we have found!

what wrong with the laserline one i have?

Skatiechik
30-05-2007, 17:59
Nothing I am sure it will do fine as an immobiliser. Peeps are just trying to offer advice to you for next time in terms of value for money.

How much did the sparkrite one cost you out of interest?

If you can stretch to a disclok they are well worth it.

hi its her boyrfriend, the immobiliser cost £80 to buy and install, she doesnt have money for the alarm aswell, or a decent disklok, they are about £80 themselves

Hi, occasionally the police (crime prevention) run a scheme to supply genuine discloks at a very reduced price.
I think they are only available to people who have suffered from car theft etc.
why not ask 'em, you may be surprised at the price:o .

They are not the genuine ones they are rubbish. A friend of ours bought one from the police and it was made of plastic. Not much use really.

Maybe they do different ones
Mine came from the police and it's the genuine disclok - very heavy, all metal,
covers the whole of the steering wheel and has a thatcham test rating.
It's also very YELLOW :hihi: .

Humperlumper

I can't remember the exact price but I'm pretty sure it was less than half retail price at the time (less than £40-00).
It's worth remembering to look for the Thatcham approval on any car security stuff.
Hopefully all the thieving toe-rags will leave yours alone now.

The one my buddy got was so mickey mouse. Any thief looking at it would just laugh. The police should be ashamed for selling them.

We bought all three of our disc locks from Shaws Motor Factors on Abbeydale Road with a trade discount. Think they were in the region of £50 each and they are all very very yellow, and heavy if you drop them on your foot!:loopy:

Yours sound the same as mine.
Did the one your friend got have a thatcham rating? I saw some (Disclok 2000 I think) that looked very plastic and only covered part of the steering wheel, but they still had a rating.

The police came to get a statement from me yesterday and the little toerags have been caught. They stole it specifically to go and steal a motorbike from outside the Hallam University and guess what...

... they were caught on CCTV. Police said they only had my car for an hour and then dumped it at the manor estate when they realised they couldn't steal the bike.

Anyway the policeman said he was going to charge them today and they are going to court sometime next week. And I could potentially get £500 back which is what they cost me. Policeman said its likely to be 3p a week :-(

At least they caught them. When we had the pick up nicked they knew who had done it but couldnt point the finger.

The Sparkrite alarms are the ones you used to be able to get from Argos, they were rubbish though IIRC they had a sounder you screwed to the bulkhead, all that would happen was when the alarm went off the thief would just rag the supply off the sounder to silence it.

If someone wants to nick it they are probably not going to be put off by some rubbish halfords alarm.

To be fair probably best solution would be to get a good steering lock, unless its something worth going to trouble with its likely to put them off. They aren't going to break out the saw and cut through the steering wheel to nick some crappy old cavalier are they?
