Now, someone has given me a Compaq PC to fix for them.

Now after taking the cover off I notice:

The HDD is "huge" a Quantum 5.25" series.

Now, you fire it up the LEDs come up, HDD grinds - but it doesen't POST - no OS loading, no IDE drive detection, no nothing.

I leave it a couple of times, re-boot... 2/5 times it booted the OD and the others nothing.

It's a P2, 64MB SD-RAM, AT PSU

Any ideas? Then I can go on from there.

First thing I would try is disconect the hard drive then reboot, the hard drive was know as a big foot. if it boots without the drive then theres your broblem.

Fraid I tried it without the HDD..

I think it's scrap heap time...

However. he claimed it worked POSTed and booted the OS etc before it was in my hands - and the only thing has changed is:

I have it rigged on a TFT
I have my keyboard and mouse - both PS/2.

So nothing has really changed

When you powere it up you hear it going through the motions but nothing appears on screen?

Just a thought but it could be the video isn't setup for the TFT's refresh rate? Have you tried it with a normal CRT?

What about resetting the Bios?

I can't get into the BIOS - I'll try it with a CRT...

But firstly how the hell do I put my AT PSU back together... P1 and P2 together and then P3 next to it... but which way do they fit - the flat side facing the top or bottom?

The previous owner had allowed the cat to sit on the top of the coputer and as it was facing as a rectangle all the fur had got into the PSU... But I said at that age etc best to out it .

Alex

PS

Pentium 2
64 MB RAM
Cat-furred PSU

Pretty shot IMO

Just in case any body else has a compaq problem, their 'chat' style help available through their website is quite handy.

True but having them locate the problem to being a cat having sat on top of the computer may have taken a while.

Old yes... definitely past the "use by" date for a desktop user but still useful... Word of advice, keep a hold of the easily storable parts such as RAM, CPU, floppy drive and any CD/DVD drives you can get out of the machine..

You just never know when someone you know will need a spare...
