View Full Version : The seven ages of Rock
Elan Tedrona 20-05-2007, 22:25 Anyone watching this show on the BBc or have watched it. It is fantastic and the 60s sure look like alot of fun! I knew Hendrix was good but my God, you really do grasp his greatness after watching the show. Though I must say the story of jimi telling the DJ to play a bob dylan tape in an african american club was kinda funny. Good Show BBC. Worth every penny of the license fee.
Can't wait for Iron Maiden and Metallica!

Taped it and quite want to watch the whole series in a beer and rock fest ........
Saxon were truly embarrassing in that mess that just ended on C4 mind you .......
Funky_Gibbon 21-05-2007, 17:33 I watched it as well. I laughed my head off when they told the story about Eric Clapton, having just watched Hendrix playing, saying he was going home to practice ;)
I'm looking forward to the rest of this series. Something decent to watch on a Saturday for a change.
Joe Totale 23-05-2007, 19:49 not enough zep, the @@@@s
drinkingman 23-05-2007, 20:51 Good show. I thought it showed well the impact Jimi had when he arrived in England. He did things with a guitar that had never been done before.
I'm left-handed and I have a Strat, but there, believe me, that's where any similarity ends completely. Wish I'd seen him. If I remember rightly, Jimi played the Mojo the same night The Who played the City Hall. Anyone else recall?
dfgenius 23-05-2007, 21:10 I've just finished reading quite a long book on Hendrix. Just about every famous rock guitar player was influenced by him. A true genius.
I agree Joe, you can never have enough Zep :D

Yes you can.
Moby Dick.
And I'm a drummer.
Awful.
It was interesting, looking forward to the next one...
Chris_Sleeps 24-05-2007, 18:01 It was patchy really. They skipped a lot of stuff out, which i guess is justified because it was only an hour long. No mention of The Kinks which is criminal in itself.
getphysical 24-05-2007, 19:12 Loved the programme it brought back some great memories. Never got to see Hendrix unfortunately. How good does Roger Daltry look!!!
given his age...63 by my sums, yeah :hihi:
peterete 25-05-2007, 14:42 jajajajaa...yeah thatīs true my friend, so true
programme had very 'brit' based views in places (although forgetting to focus on the beatles who were the first to do a stadium gig :loopy: )...good programme all the same..but plenty of kissing u2's arse and discounting bon jovi and guns n roses as all image made me wanna throw something at the tv...
bono is a publicity hound..and i dont hear a word he says with any sincerity...just a shame they have done a few really good songs...i want to hate them more then i do :hihi:

Good opening riff though!
The tracks real purpose though, was to keeep bonzo off the juice for 20 mins, it also allwowed the rest of the band a chance to "freshen up"

it's a brit commissioned programme - no mysteries there.
but to be fair, for the 4-5 episodes up to now it has paid very in depth homages to American key influences along the timeline ( Hendrix, Patti Smith, Ramones, Dylan, Springsteen, Kiss among others )
The final missing American link that will need to be acknowledged in a stage in Rock will be Nirvana.
Beatles playing in Shea '66 was zero audience control. Pioneered in word only to prove it was a mistake. Was just an auditory mess in sound mixing and an event in a stadium that had copious amount of activity in the paramedics tent.
What the show was trying to say was how the stadia acts in the '70s & '80s finally learnt - & knew - how to sustain and bring out the best from the masses using Rock as a medium, be it in Rio or in the Barrowlands.

sorry bon jovi are NOT talented. just plain old new jersey white trash. they were more apart of the 80s pop metal scene more than being stadium rock, thus them being over looked. just because you can sell out a stadium does not make you a stadium god.
i didnt see the one on heavy metal, but im sure gnr were more focused on in that segment then on the ones who made stadium rock what it is.
next weeks is about alternative, so expect TONS of nirvana ass kissing. the last and final one is about indie, but indie is just the new term for alternative. ill still watch, though ill flip my **** if they fail to discuss the importance of the DC hardcore scene and the influence of bands like Husker Du and Bad Religion.

Of course they are talented, ok recent stuff is a bit dross, but the These Days album is a masterclass in songwriting. The programe was stadium rock....bon jovi are a rock band, who have played in MANY stadiums. And Husker Du may have influenced a few bands (bad religion more so) but come on...its a niche market.. and if they get a mention on a uk 'indie' focussed programme id be very very suprised...it'l prob be all blur, oasis and pulp...maybe a bit of manic street preachers.
Van Halen & Aerosmith don't seem to have been featured either, obviously they dont want to focus on american rock bands that much. Although they gave Bruce Springsteen a good mention...he may sell out to big audiences (so do ZZ Top) but more then 30mins of him and i'd wanna fall asleep.

**** = Wig? That isn't a rude word is it?
Classic Rock 18-06-2007, 11:55 I've only caught bits of it in passing, but it does seem to focus predominantly on a few major artists yet misses out others who deserve a mention.

the boss is brilliant. the reason why he gets a mention is because when he plays his homecoming gigs at the meadowlands (the indoor arena) in new jerseys its usually for 20+ nights and all sold out - though according to wiki he managed to do a ten night stint at the football stadium in 2003 selling out all nights. bon jovi could never do that. the last large tour i remember them doing in 2001, i think they only sold 80% of capacity of the 80k crowd for one night.
anyways not to focus on husker du would be disappointing (though it looks like they are since they are pictured on the series website) as they pretty much helped create the scene along with the minutemen (who were huskers "rivals"), black flag, bad religion and fugazi. the diy ethics of american indie/punk help lay the building blocks for grunge in the us. it also help create the aesthetic that all bands who want to be considered indie want to have.
simone1975 18-06-2007, 21:58 I find it interesting but a bit hit and miss.
Some of it was fascinating and some of it was zzzzzzzz.
EdnaKrabappe 30-06-2007, 23:27 Really enjoyed tonights (30th June) on Brit pop and Indie (I hope Emily from Big Brother was watching and was taking notes. :hihi:)
Think it's a shame they didn't mention Joy Division and New Order's importance and they brushed Paul Young off as a pop act (He had a career with the Q-Tips before his chart success.) They also tended to focus on Madchester and omited acts like The la's and cast and completely forgot James! The ending of the programme also was a bit on fast forward as if they'd realised they'd only got two minutes left and suddenly there was Oasis then there wasn't any more indie based rock until the Arctic Monkeys! (erm Ash? Feeder? Stereophonics? Manics? etc etc etc!)
Yes it focused on the main acts but this is a generalised popular programme. Thought it was a stroke of genius showing the Britpop now programme again directly afterwards on BBC 4 (a very good introduction to the genre) then the Later Britpop and now, as I type, Pulp's programme about Sheffield. :)
Agent Gypo 30-06-2007, 23:31 I hated this series. It suffered from the same arse-kissing and back slapping interviews that blighted Channel 4's awful UK Music Hall Of Fame.
Basically, lots of has beens and jaded old men. Age doesn't seem to sit well with rock stars.

Oh dear I don't think we'll ever agree on music Agent Gypo but I agree with you on the haggedness of Clint Boon then/Clint Boon now Mani then/Mani now even Ian Brown, who i didn't think looked that bad until tonight. And Damon Albarn looks like a completely different person now.

Don't get me wrong, I like some of the bands throughout the series. What I didn't like was seeing bands like Metallica talk about how much they still "kick ass" when they haven't done anything worthwhile since 1988.
I just found the sense of self-importance by a lot of the artists quite nausiating.
discodown 01-07-2007, 08:32 Always the way though. Metallica have been crap for many many years. Bunch of hypocrites and corporate as you like
