Bumping this again.....
matsalleh's links have helped me no end over this weekend. My budget took a massive dent so i had to find a bargain.

I plumped for a Fujifilm Finepix S5500 (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilms5100/).
Can't wait to get snapping again :)
