As an ex pat of Sheffield I always know I'm back in Sheffield when I see the Tinsley viaduct and the cooling towers. I think they are to Sheffield what the Golden Gate Bridge is to San Francisco.

What landmarks tell you that you have arrived in Sheffield.

The Fox House pub, such a nice sight after tramping in the hills and realising you've almost got to the bus stop.

The bumpy roads start on the Sheffield boundary - that's my landmark.

I heard that too. I wish they'd just knock them down, they're an eyesore.

A thousand years ago when I was in the army (and had hair), coming home on leave by train. First sight of a blue and cream bus going under or over the lines told me I was nearly home at last.

Nowadays? 'thud', bang goes my tracking, must be Sheffield.

Yes, the blue and cream was distinctive. I think we should have a campaign to kick out stagecoach and bring back STD.

No, not that kind of STD!

:hihi:

The heeley horse is painted on a rise in the hillside and is visible from the trainline approaching sheffield from the south, I can see it from my work, and if you know where you're looking, you can see it from chesterfield road, and further away to the west.

There are some familiar landmarks into the city when you come down the parkway into the centre. The massive supertram viaduct on the left and the attractive canal basin on the right as you approach park square, and the supertram Bridge, which is in the style of the tyne bridge. The huge chimneys in the edmund road incinerator. The familiar tall buildings which can be seen from a long way off, The victorian town hall clock, the arts tower, telecom house.

How about the Carbrook Hall Hotel one of a very few survivors on Attercliffe Common ? OR Just a (little!!!) while ago it would have been Wincobank Castle.

A decade or more ago both the wednesday and united football grounds had huge pylon floodlights. But nowadays the fashion is to have a bath of light around the whole ground, so pylons have gone, another couple of familiar landmarks which could have been seen for miles
