OK - This is quite a wide topic. What Ice-Cream Vans do you remember, from what era, and what did they sell?

Personnally, as a relative young 'un (which, in the scheme of things, is comparitively boring) I remember, around Chapeltown, Mr. Ronksley (purple/pink/blue van), Mr. Whippy (blue and white) and, oh dear, a pink and white van... the name escapes me...

Can anybody help out?

I can recall one van with the name Angelo written on it. This stuck in my head as the Brotherhood of Man had a record in the charts by the same name at this time! (Infact, one sad person, whose name shall remain private actually owned said record.)

I too remember Mr Whippy but that's about it. However, the sound of the ice cream van's bells reminds me of summers long gone, a Saturday or Sunday evening at my grandparents' house on School Road, Crookes with the back door open, Black Beauty theme tune eminating from the lounge and me aged about 7 years old with not a care in the world. (However, I did have half my gob ripped out courtesy of the dental practice just up yonder!)

Favourite lollies? I always liked the white Haunted House one with a ghost drawn in green which disappeared as you licked at it and I was always fond of the cider flavoured lollipops which I believe you can still get. Also, Funny Faces? And even Funny Feet. Or am I getting confuddled?

Living at Sheffield Lane Top, our main ice cream van was Hulley's, lovely ice cream, it was sad when they finally closed.

I remember going to Hulley's factory in the late 40s.
I think it was a Sunday outing when I visited my grandparents at Shiregreen.
The ice cream man who come round Parson Cross in the late 40's early 50,s had a very ornate van.I think it was Luigi's[sp].
We would clammer around when he made his stop near our house ,even though we had no money.A lucky kid would get a free wafer.
As an aside .Pre WW 2 most of the ice cream venders came from Italian Stock.I had a G,G,grandmother who was born in Italy.
One of my uncles had very Italian features and he used to work on the ice cream carts before I was born [1939] So My mother told me

My dad used to own an icecream van about 10 years ago.
Pink and Cream Dulux Paint. Freds Ice's it was called.
Parked near Ecclesall Junior School and sometimes High Storrs School.

It was always a race to get there before the Sanellis van!

Still There. They have a sweetshop aswell. They keep all the vans in the yard behind the building. I would bet that the place hasn't changed for years!

No one's mentioned Mr Softy yet.

Which did you prefer, the hard slab type between 2 wafers or the softer stuff that came out of the pump type machine?

Raspberry juice was a must and a dip in the hundreds and thousands.

I think Hulley's used to make the tub ice cream that they served in theatres as well.

Do you remeber the smell of the van. It was a mixture of sweet ice cream, fruit juice from the lollies and diesel fumes from the engine which they had to keep running. There was always a strong draft or warm air came out of a grill on the side from the cooling system.

PS, our cat liked Mr Softy ice cream!

When I was a young-un in Owlerton Dad used to tell us that when the ice cream van was playing his jingle it was to let everyone know he had run out of ice cream.

Happy Days!

The worst Ice Cream Van I ever saw was called Mr Flaver. He lived on Wordsworth near the filling station, and would plug his freezer into the the streetlamp overnight He had loads of pictures of different lollies on the window, but all he'd got in his freezer were Zooms and FABs. He used to break the flakes in half, so his 99s were 49s. He was really miserable too - hated kids. He didn't last long though, went back to being a window cleaner after a few months.

I worked at Hulleys in the 70s packing tubs, screwballs and using the piping machine . the icecream came out continuously so if you got behind filling the empty tub you were in trouble.
the fruit in the icecream came in tins.
We had to wear little white wellies and a hair net -even the men lol.
My old school chum's dad was an icecream man -(manfredis)
in the shiregreen area.-60s 70s.
He lived on molineaux road.
Anyone remember him ,mr turner was his name forgotten his first name could have been fred.

Her name was Gillian, sadly she passed away a few years ago.

I lived on Princess Street Norfolk Bridge and remember the ice cream trike in the 50's also remember helping the Sunday paper man who used a horse and cart, used to get 2/6p and some seasoned yorkshire pudding from an old lady on the route, food for the gods on a cold winters morning. We would go back to the stables for a ride on Dolly the horse, wonderful memories

I don't think anyone has mentioned Taggi's icecream, One of the best. Their shop was somewhere at the bottom of Gleadless Rd, I think I have read Plain Talker remarking about it .

Going to the catholic schools I went at the same time as the Granellis and the Manfredis, And on Holy days of obligation (days off school ) Carios, at the top of Scotland St used to bring round trays of icecream sandwiches to the school for after we had done our stint in church.
After which we were left to wander the bombed buildings of which there were an awful lot.

I'm talking 1960s here.
Something I could never understand was the "Walls" policy of selling Iced-Cream in rectangular chunks, and having cones with an oblong container section, but they were each of different sizes, so that when you put the iced-cream in the cone, it wobbled like fury.
It wasn't just a small amount of "play" in the dimensions, it was a totally diferent size and shape.

Perhaps it was designed by the same idiot who decided to put a hotel next to the Peace Gardens?

A mate of mine had all his windows double glazed so that his kids wouldn't hear the ice cream van......

J. Clayton (Hillsborough) had several vans in the 1950s and 1960s. John Ronksley is still going in Hillsborough - he and his parents used to work for Clayton's. There were also Granelli's, Truffelli's and (a long time ago) Molinari's. Early on summer Sunday mornings in the 1930s my grandfather used to send my dad on his bike to fetch a load of dry ice (from Granelli's in Broad Street I think). Grandma would then make the ice cream in her "copper" and they would cycle to Ashopton to sell cornets and sandwiches.

I remember an ice cream cart that used to come to Attercliffe in the 50's. He used to stand at the bottom of Norman Street/Clay Street/Brompton Road. Thick yellow stuff it was and very tasty. We used to take a cup down and get it filled and have a handful of wafers to go with it for sixpence. Or you could have a cornet.
Can't remember whose it was but it was the best I've ever tasted.

Yes I'm afraid I am, I too remember the walls trike and my favourite, snow fruit lollies, taggies, Mr whippy.

Elmambo

Mr. Whippy's vans were pink and white. They played greensleeves and were owned by Northern Dairies. Based at Sandygate behind the plough, its houses now. They were bought by Walls after a few years, but the ice cream was never the same because they used an inferior sterile mix.

Walls vans were blue and white sold solid ice cream and played a two note bing bong. When Walls aquired Mr. Whippy they were based together on John St. opposite the football ground.

I used to drive the Yankee Boy van round the Flower estate at weekends - for a while any way. It was owned by Trufelli's ( montfredi's), based off Peniston Road, behind the Swan factory. Most of their fleet was loose ice cream vans.

Granelli's shop is still there selling exactly the same things. Apart from its ice cream, it sells 'Old fashioned spice at an old fashioned price'. That's the logo over the shop window.
